DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4

By offering a high-performance hybrid in the Premium C SUV segment with the DS 7 Crossback, DSAutomobiles confirms to be at the cutting edge of technology.

The high standard of French expertise has produced a highly-versatile and capable vehicle DS7Crossback E-Tense 4x4 with 300hp and a torque of 450Nm, four-wheel drive, a 50 kilometre all-electric range (WLTP standard), and energy recovery during braking or deceleration.

Starting with the DS 7 Crossback, all of new DS Automobiles' models will be electrified versions.

From boldness comes excellence. DS Automobiles has become the first carmaker to offer a high-performance petrol-electric hybrid technology in the Premium C SUV segment.

The expanding DS 7 Crossback range, which has been on sale since beginning 2018, is venturing into new territory with the innovative DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4 model. For the first time, a Premium C SUV has been able to offer customers a versatile product with many drive modes driven by three motors (one ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and two electric motors), to best combine the energy provided by petrol and electricity, rechargeable from a mains power supply or through deceleration regeneration.

DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 2019 review

Should I buy one?

Even so, based on this drive the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense is a tough car to recommend. Aside from outright practicality, an Audi Q5 TFSIe outperforms it in pretty much every respect, and on the grounds of its refinement and dynamic capabilities, it’s leagues ahead.

Admittedly, the DS does claw back some territory when it comes to price. In Performance Line guise (which is expected to be its most popular trim level) it starts at £47,725 versus £49,735 for the 295bhp version of the Audi Q5 TFSIe. Our range-topping Ultra Prestige model, however, weighs in at a tough-to-swallow £56,075.

Hopefully, DS will sort the associated refinement niggles out in time for next year’s customer deliveries. Nevertheless, until we get a chance to test a fully fledged production-spec model on UK soil, it would seem that DS - which will offer only electrified models from 2025 - has a bit of work to do yet.

DS 7 Crossback Louvre edition gives virtual gallery experience

Paris art museum inspires limited-run version of DS's SUV, offering buyers free exhibition access

The new DS 7 Crossback Louvre edition brings bespoke styling to the French SUV and introduces elements of the Paris art museum to the cabin.

Priced from £46,530, the limited-run creation gives virtual access to 182 of the Louvre's most significant installations via its 12.0in infotainment touchscreen, including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and The Wedding at Cana by Véronèse.

With the new 'A Day at the Louvre' feature, users can either search for a specific work or allow the system to suggest a new piece each day. Every item has been "specially selected" by teams from both the museum and the manufacturer and is accompanied by a four-minute podcast discussing and analysing its history.

Mon dieu! Emmanuel Macron has a new car

The DS 7 Crossback Élysée is the French President’s elongated, armoured, plug-in hybrid office

Whatever your views on politics, the cars that drag our senior politicians around are invariably cool. And a wonderful window into the car culture of the country they run. Boris Johnson may not be your cup of tea, but he’s hung onto a glorious Callum-era Jaguar XJ when the car is (sadly) no longer made.

But we’re on the other side of the channel for today’s Politicians’ Cars update, namely the new wheels of French President Emmanuel Macron. A man who a) clearly has pride in his country’s produce and b) presumably doesn’t pay for the car himself and therefore has no worries about depreciation. Hence he has the biggest, poshest DS on sale.

Bigger and posher than you can buy from the showroom. Having toured the Paris streets inside a DS 7 Crossback Présidentiel edition during his 2017 inauguration, he’s now upgraded to something called a DS 7 Crossback Élysée.

It’s longer – by 20cm, and all in the wheelbase – and now runs on 300bhp plug-in hybrid power. Kinda handy when you’ve climate summits to show face at.

New DS 7 ÉLYSÉE at the service of the French Presidency on Bastille Day

French President Emmanuel Macron had the opportunity of sampling the best local automotive luxury of his country after being ferried around in the new DS 7 ÉLYSÉE to celebrate Bastille Day for the Republic.

Citroëns premium DS brand took centre stage on the country’s 14th of July (14 Juillet) celebrations which commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on the same day in 1789. The violent attack on the government by the people of feudalist state signalling the start of the French Revolution and abolished the political structure of absolute monarchy.

DS 7

The new DS 7 is an evolution of the first 100 per cent DS Automobiles design revealed in 2017, DS 7 CROSSBACK, which projected a new spirit of the avant-garde. Acclaimed for its unparalleled interiors, its remarkable refinement and its cutting-edge technology, DS 7 CROSSBACK opened the way for new developments, now embodied by New DS 7.

"At the same time as respecting the personality and elegance of the existing shape, we've injected an additional touch of dynamism with sharp features. New DS 7's character is given a boost, particularly at the front and rear, while its design still fits into the current DS Automobiles range. It's the result of co-operation between DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS, the technical team who've brought a great deal of technology and our manufacturing team who've succeeded in producing new features. Styling touches added to the interior enhance the consistency throughout." Thierry Metroz, Design Director

DS 7 E-Tense 225 2022 review

The price reflects that positioning to a degree. The E-Tense 225 starts from £44,190 in Performance Line trim, which represents reasonable value. The plusher leather interior that comes with Rivoli and Opera trim suits the DS 7 better, but that upgrade doesn’t come cheap, and neither do the separate options. Calculate with care if you’re tempted.

It’s not hard to see why you might be, but the underdeveloped chassis, so-so electric range and quickly escalating price make the DS 7 far from the obvious choice in the hybrid SUV class.

DS 7 review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“The facelifted DS 7 looks smart, rides well, and has a useful electric-only range, but a premium could dissuade many”

The DS 7 is well-enough executed as a vehicle to barge its way into the mosh pit of rivals. It looks premium (particularly so now given the mid-life facelift), feels premium, and drives pleasingly enough, while its striking, plush cabin and relaxed nature are a relatively distinctive proposition.

The biggest issue is the asking price, which will surely put it out of reach compared to most of its mainstream rivals. Then there’s the depreciation, whether your friends will take it seriously, and whether the DS name has even got the awareness to find the buyers it needs. No pressure.

Updated DS 7 on sale with PHEV power and a £36,760 price tag

Plush large SUV gets a fresh look, new PHEV powertrains and improved interior technology

Pricing and specification details have been revealed for the new DS 7, which is on sale now with an opening price tag of £36,760.

The revamped SUV, the largest car in the French car maker’s model range, launches with three plug-in hybrid powertrains, including a 355bhp range-topper, and a choice of five specification levels.

Entry-level Performance Line cars are fitted with 19in black alloy wheels as standard, as well as Alcantara seats, a 12in touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3in digital display. Safety equipment includes emergency braking, blind spot detection and traffic sign recognition.

Performance Line+ models start from £39,460 and gain improved tech like a 180-degree reversing camera, front parking sensors and a heated windscreen, while heated seats and a leather steering wheel complete the interior.

Move up to Rivoli for black and chrome exterior design modifications, Nappa leather, front massage seats and a premium clock in the centre console. Prices start from £40,660.

But broadly, the 7 seems set to stay a fringe player in a class that also includes the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40. It has likeable qualities, some of them in unexpected places, but its approach to offering refinement and opulence still feels more superficial than fundamental.

The biggest issue is the asking price, which will surely put it out of reach compared to most of its mainstream rivals. Although much of that price is accounted for by the PHEV system.

DS buyers it seems are positively attracted to the fact they're not just buying their umpteenth Audi, and cherish the individuality. Certainly we can't see the day when there's one of these on every street. It's a little oddball for that, even if appealingly so.

DS 7 to go electric-only from 2025 alongside Lancia counterpart

Luxury crossover will become the French brand’s first electric SUV and be twinned with a new Lancia model

The DS 7 SUV will go electric-only from 2025 and launch as the French firm’s first electric SUV alongside a Lancia counterpart, as Stellantis’s premium brands prepare to go all-electric by 2027.

Part of DS's and Lancia's platform-sharing programme, the new DS 7 is likely to use the same STLA Medium underpinnings as the Peugeot e-3008. It is set to be introduced by 2025 - eight years after the current model first went on sale in the UK.

It will be joined by an electric-only replacement for the DS 9 saloon, which is set to be reborn as a coupé-style fastback in a similar vein to the Peugeot 408. Autocar has approached Stellantis for further comment.

The all-electric DS 7 will be produced at Stellantis's Melfi plant in southern Italy alongside the new Jeep Compass, which also uses the STLA Medium platform but is planned to go on sale with hybrid and electric options.

Currently, the plant makes the Fiat 500X, Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade, but production for these models is expected to come to an end between 2024 and 2025.

Little is known about the technical details of the new DS 7, but its underpinnings suggest the model could offer a range of more than 435 miles in higher-trim levels and 310 miles as standard.
