Should I buy one?

Hell yes. The rivals are few and far between, nonexistent at this performance level, and few feel this comfortable to push hard in. The 812 feels less natural, perhaps, than an Aston Vanquish S’s, which feels an altogether lazier, perhaps more analogue experience. Preferring a Vanquish to an 812 would be like taking a roll-top bath over a Jacuzzi: there are reasons why you would, but technologically and experientially, the Superfast offers more.

More than anything else in this class? No doubt, although “nothing is ever perfect,” says de Simone. That’s true, but no other super-GT car has yet come this close.

DRIVEN: Ferrari 812 Superfast

Summary

These days, twelve-cylinder GT cars are few and far between. And I have never expected a GT car this at home on the track. That said, this is exactly what you would expect from Ferrari.

The drivetrain is the cherry on the proverbial 812 Superfast cake for me. The car does so many things right, but to experience the ferocity and intensity of this V12 is something truly special. The fact that there is a boot and neat leather luggage straps behind the seats on the parcel shelf even adds a measure of versatility.

The 812 possesses the sort of performance that will embarrass supercars and it is more involving to drive than some of them, too. Ferrari has been building front-engined (front/mid-engined, in this case) cars for more than five decades and the company has yet again created a vehicle that delivers on every level.

FERRARI 812 SUPERFAST COMING TO SA! HERE’S HOW MANY

Back in February, Ferrari took the wraps off the new 812 Superfast, complete with a more powerful, 6,5-litre version of the brand’s famous V12 engine. And, earlier this month, CAR’s very own Wilhelm Lutjeharms drove the newcomer in Italy.

Now, we can confirm that the Ferrari 812 Superfast is headed for South Africa, with the local launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2018.

How many units have been set aside for SA customers? Well, just 20 examples will make their way to our shores, at an unconfirmed price.

The latest version of Ferrari’s 12-cylinder as featured in the new flagship GT makes a whopping 588 kW at 8 500 r/min and 718 N.m at 7 000 r/min, with 80% of peak torque available at 3 500 r/min. Top speed is quoted as being in excess of 340 km/h, while the 0-100 km/h sprint takes a claimed 2,9 seconds.

The front-engined 812 Superfast’s dual-clutch transmission has specific gear ratios, which combined with shorter up- and down-shifting times between gears, sharpen throttle response further still, according to Ferrari.

Interestingly, the 812 Superfast is the first Ferrari to sport electric power steering. It also features the latest 5,0 version of Ferrari’s Side Slip Control system.

15 intriguing facts we learnt on our Ferrari HQ visit

During a recent trip to Maranello in Italy to drive the new Ferrari 812 Superfast, we had the opportunity to visit the factory, as well as the two museums and the company’s Classiche department. We even ate in the canteen.

Here are some interesting facts we learned about this company during the visit…

1. Enzo’s office was positioned next to the main gate/entrance to the factory, so that he could monitor every car that came and went.

2. Following WWII, the buildings were restored (in 1947).

3. Ferrari has its own wind-tunnel on site, which was finished in 1997. It is used for the development of Formula 1 cars only.

4. In total, approximately 3 000 people (from about 30 different countries) are employed in Maranello by Ferrari.

5. The factory has its own aluminium foundry where the engine blocks are moulded.

6. Each V12 engine is built by one engine builder, and is on a line separate to that of the V8s and V6 Maserati engines. Each V8 and V6 engine, meanwhile, is worked on by more than one employee.

7. V8-engined cars and V12-engined cars have their own assembly lines, and so did the LaFerrari.

8. Each Ferrari engine is tested for 30 minutes when it is finished.

9. Each Ferrari, before it leaves the factory, is put through a 50 km test drive.

10. A new building is currently being built to house the company’s designers.

11. Total production for 2017 will be 8 400 units, up from 2016’s 8 014 cars. However, demand still outstrips supply.

12. The on-site Ferrari canteen supplies around 2 500 meals a day.

13. The Classiche department is on also on site, close to the main gate, and was officially opened in 2006.

14. The “main gate” is still used, although most traffic now enters via other, larger entrances.

15. One engineer pointed to the fact that the replacement for the 812 might be all-wheel drive, owing to the level of power these cars are now making. Whether it will be full-time or switchable four-wheel drive remains to be seen…

Ferrari's 588kW 70th anniversary gift: 812 Superfast for SA

Ferrari showed its 812 Superfast at a private gala event at Scuderia South Africa’s state of the art showroom in Bryanston. The Superfast is Ferrari’s most powerful production car yet.

The private preview of the of the flagship 812 Superfast is particularly significant, as Ferrari’s noble V12 heritage has its roots in the founding of the company, 70 years ago. Ferrari remains to this day the only manufacturer to have continuously produced sports cars with 12- cylinder engines throughout that time.

The first and most difficult challenge Ferrari always faces when it decides to develop a new model is to push the boundaries of its own achievements yet again. This challenge made all the tougher when the task at hand involves designing a new 12-cylinder engine, the power unit that hailed the start of the glorious Prance Horse story 70 years ago in 1947. On such occasion, the result of intensive research and development produced a distinctive model that was incomparable.

Powered by a new 6.5-litre V12, the 812 Superfast is the benchmark in the mid-front engined sports car segment, achieving its maximum power output at 8,500 rpm. The result ensures the kind of the thrilling top-end performance that is the exclusive characteristic of Ferrari V12s. Maximum torque is 718Nm at 7000rpm, a significant 80% of which is already available at 3500rm. improving driveability and pickup at low revs. The 812 Superfast thus ushers in a new era in Ferrari 12 cylinder history, in doing so, building on the invaluable legacies of the F12Berlinetta and F12tdf.

The 812 Superfast is equipped with leading-edge vehicle dynamics control systems and components. It is striking for both its highly innovative design and aero package, as well as its unpatrolled handling. It is also the first Ferrari to sport EPS (Electric Power Steering)

Simply put, the 812 Superfast is the new benchmark for mid-front engined sports cars. And its heart is the new 12-cylinder which has forged its character.

The 812 Superfast is expected to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2018.
