It's been announce. The all-new 3rd Gen FiST.

1.5 3-pot Ecoboost with 147kw & 290nm.

2017 Ford Fiesta ST officially revealed

Ford’s new hot supermini will outpace the current model with a 197bhp 1.5-litre triple

The latest Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch has been revealed, which matches the performance of the brand’s current range-topping ST200 model. The new ST hits 62mph from rest in 6.7sec — 0.2sec faster than the outgoing Fiesta ST.

To be unveiled officially at the Geneva motor show in March, the Fiesta ST remains an important halo model for Ford, particularly in the UK, where its Fiesta supermini continues to dominate car sales. It is in its eighth consecutive year at the top of the car sales rankings.

The third-generation Fiesta ST is the first to feature Ford’s new, 197bhp three-cylinder 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine. It also introduces three drive modes, which adjust engine, steering and stability controls. There are more customisation options than previously, too.

“Next-generation Fiesta ST customers will benefit from innovations developed by Ford Performance for the Ford GT supercar and Focus RS hot hatch, including fuel injection and drive mode technologies,” said Ford Performance boss Dave Pericak.

Ford of Europe product boss Joe Bakaj added that the new model will “deliver the most versatile, fun, engaging and rewarding Fiesta ST driving experience yet”.

Sitting alongside the well-received 1.0-litre Ecoboost used across the Ford range, the 1.5-litre engine has 214lb ft and uses turbocharging, high-pressure fuel injection and twin independent variable cam timing, all of which delivers “optimised performance and fuel efficiency”, according to Ford. A new turbocharger features an optimised turbine design to build boost pressure more quickly and to minimise lag, according to the car maker.

The engine also features cylinder deactivation technology, a world first for a three-cylinder engine but increasingly common on bigger engines and used frequently on Volkswagen Group TSI petrol units. The move will help improve fuel efficiency by shutting down one cylinder when full capacity power isn’t needed, such as when cruising with little demand on the engine.

A major new addition for the Fiesta ST is the introduction of three drive modes: Normal, Sport and Track.

Normal mode is the default setting, where all systems, including the traction control and electronic stability control, (ESC) are configured to give a natural driving feel.

In Sport mode, engine mapping and throttle pedal response are sharpened and there’s more “driving feedback”, says Ford. Sport mode also creates more noise, through Ford’s Electronic Sound Enhancement technology and the opening of the active exhaust noise control valve, both of which heighten the exhaust note and engine noise within the cabin.

In Track mode, Ford says all of the vehicle’s dynamics are tuned for the fastest possible lap times, traction control is disabled and electronic stability control is set to wideslip mode for circuit driving.

ESC offers drivers a choice of three modes — full system intervention, wide-slip mode with limited intervention and full system deactivation.

The ST’s chassis also uses torque vectoring to improve roadholding and reduce understeer by applying braking force to the inside front wheel when cornering.

Available in three-door and five-door versions, echoing the current ST, the car’s exterior design includes a “race-carinspired” mesh grille, large rear wing and exclusive 18in alloy wheels, as well as a new Liquid Blue paint colour.

Inside there are Recaro seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. Customers can choose from a range of trims for the gearlever, steering wheel and door pulls, as well as a number of styling packs.

Ford’s latest infotainment system, Sync3, also features. It uses a tablet-like touchscreen up to 8.0in in size that can be operated with pinch and swipe gestures. The ST will also offer a high-end B&O Play sound system, first announced on the standard Fiesta late last year.

The new Fiesta ST goes on sale early next year and is expected to be priced slightly higher than the outgoing model, which starts at £18,145.

Say hello to the new (three-cylinder!) Ford Fiesta ST

Ford has officially revealed the new Fiesta ST, confirming that the B-segment blaster will be powered by a three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

The unveiling of the hot hatch comes after the automaker revealed the cooking versions (including a sportily styled ST-Line variant) of the all-new, seventh-generation Fiesta range late last year.

The next-generation Ford Fiesta ST will be powered by an all-new, three-cylinder, 1,5-litre EcoBoost engine, complete with the fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation system that will first be seen on the latest version of the brand’s 1,0-litre EcoBoost engine. No mention of transmission options is made in the initial press material, but the photographs do show a six-speed manual gearbox.

Shown for the first time ahead of its global public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the new Fiesta ST will deliver 147 kW, 290 N.m and an “anticipated” 0‑100 km/h acceleration time of 6,7 seconds (compared to the 134 kW, 240 N.m and 6,9 seconds of the current 1,6-litre model).

It will also feature selectable drive modes for the first time, enabling engine, steering and stability controls to be configured to Normal, Sport and Track modes, with the latter seeing traction control disabled and ESC interventions set to what Ford describes as “wide-slip mode”.

The drive modes will furthermore adjust the new Fiesta ST’s “Electronic Sound Enhancement” (piped in noise, then) technology and active exhaust noise control valve.

Ford says the new global product will be launched in early 2018 in both three- and five-door body styles.

Inside, the new Fiesta ST will feature Recaro front seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. Exterior colour options will include a new Liquid Blue hue, while the hot hatch will run on exclusive 18-inch alloys.

Ford Performance revealed the next generation Ford Fiesta ST, powered by an all-new three-cylinder, 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine.

Shown for the first time ahead of its global public debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the next generation Ford Fiesta ST will deliver 200 PS, 290 Nm of torque, and anticipated 0-100 km/h (0 62 mph) acceleration in 6.7 seconds.

The third generation of Ford Fiesta ST will be the first Ford Performance model ever powered by a three-cylinder engine, and will be the first Fiesta ST to feature selectable Drive Modes - enabling engine, steering and stability controls to be configured to Normal, Sport and Track settings for an optimised fun-to-drive experience in conditions from motorways to track days.

Drive Modes will also adjust Ford Fiesta ST's Electronic Sound Enhancement (ESE) technology and active exhaust noise control valve to deliver an even more satisfying driving experience. The technologies amplify the naturally sporty sound of the new 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine that also features Ford's industry-first cylinder deactivation system for a three-cylinder engine, for further reduced CO2 emissions of an anticipated 114 g/km.

Available from launch in early 2018 in both three-door and five-door bodystyles, the next generation Fiesta ST will be offered with a greater variety of interior trim and personalisation options than ever before, with bold and distinctive exterior styling that includes a unique race-car-inspired mesh grille and exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels.

"Our next generation Fiesta ST is true to the philosophy of delivering cutting-edge technology to enhance every facet of the responsive Ford Performance chassis and powertrain," said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. "With selectable Drive Modes and an all-new EcoBoost engine delivering an unprecedented combination of performance and fuel efficiency, the new model will deliver the most versatile, fun, engaging and rewarding Fiesta ST driving experience yet."

All-new 1-5-litre EcoBoost engine

Part of Ford's EcoBoost range of petrol engines that also includes the multi-award-winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost, the all-new 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine uses technology including turbocharging, high-pressure fuel injection and Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing to deliver optimised performance and fuel efficiency.

The engine's three-cylinder architecture delivers naturally high torque at low rpm. Performance is further boosted by a new turbocharger that uses an optimised turbine design to build boost pressure faster and minimise lag for a more responsive and fun driving experience.

A new combination of port fuel injection and direct fuel injection technology helps deliver high power and responsiveness alongside reduced CO2 emissions, with a particular increase in fuel efficiency under light engine loads.

Ford's new cylinder deactivation technology - first announced for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine and a world first for a three-cylinder engine - will further improve fuel efficiency for Ford Fiesta ST customers without affecting performance by automatically stopping fuel delivery and valve operation for one of the engine's cylinders in conditions where full capacity is not needed, such as when coasting or cruising with light demand on the engine. The technology can disengage or re-engage one cylinder in 14 milliseconds - 20 times faster than the blink of an eye - to seamlessly deliver full performance on demand.

The all-aluminium engine also features an integrated exhaust manifold that improves efficiency by helping the engine reach optimal temperatures faster, and delivers torque more rapidly by minimising the distance exhaust gasses travel between cylinders and turbocharger. Gas particulate filter technology that reduces soot emissions will also feature.

Will a three-pot do the job in the new Ford Fiesta ST?

The new Fiesta ST has been revealed with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 197bhp

The current one became an instant classic and its status as the world’s best compact hot hatch has remained intact for four years.

Its four-cylinder engine played an important part in that standing, and although the transition to a three-pot is understandable, its success is far from guaranteed.

Notably, Ford hasn’t opted to increase the power. Leaving aside overboost possibilities, the new petrol motor only equals the peak output of its ST200 predecessor. Without going to the expense of fitting a limited-slip diff, that’s probably sensible. But nor has the 0-62mph time improved, so the Fiesta has potentially gained little from a presumed cut in mass.

Failing to increase performance doesn’t stop the car from being brilliant, but a failure to close the gap to more expensive options, such as the Mini Cooper JCW, risks it looking like a second-class citizen to some buyers.

Still, no one is likely to complain about the engine’s efficiency advantage. CO2 emissions of 114g/km ought to put the ST’s combined claim at about 55mpg — not too shabby for fast supermini. But delivering the sound, burliness and high-rev reward of the Ecoboost will be the real achievement.

A Ford interior worth looking at!
Am I the only one disliking the current Fiesta/Focus/Kuga centre console? I hate the resemblance to butterfly/angel wings!

Maybe just me...:o

For me it's sad when they lop off cylinders in the performance cars. I miss the old 5 pot volvo block from the Focus ST of yesteryears.

When this 3rd Gen Fiesta ST hits all showrooms in early 2018 it will be interesting to see how this new 3-pot 1.5 Ecoboost motor with 197bhp goes up against the 2nd Gen Fiesta ST200 with the 4-pot 1.6 Ecoboost motor with 197bhp.

Totally agree ! I have driven a few of these smaller capacity, high output engines. Feels like you have to rev the nuts off it to get any where, cant see them lasting long on SA highveld

5 things to know about the next-gen Ford Fiesta ST

Last week, Ford revealed its new Fiesta ST, confirming that the latest version of the little hot hatch will be powered by a three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

The current Fiesta ST, of course, is one of our favourite hot hatches here at CAR, having again claimed our Top 12 Best Buys light hot hatchback award in 2017. But how will the next-generation version – which is due to go on sale in initial markets in 2018, in both three- and five-door body styles – differ?

Well, Ford hasn’t released all of the details just yet, but here are five things you should know about the new Ford Fiesta ST, which follows the reveal of the seventh-generation hatchback range last year…

1. It’s powered by a turbo-triple

Yes, a hot hatch that is powered by a three-cylinder engine. This one displaces 1,5 litres (the same size as the 100 kW turbo-triple in the Mini Cooper, then), but churns out a respectable 147 kW and 290 N.m. That’s a little more power than the 141 kW Volkswagen Polo GTI. Compared to the current four-pot Fiesta ST, these figures represent an increase of 13 kW and 50 N.m, which Ford says should be enough for a 6,7-second sprint to 100 km/h (an improvement of two-tenths).

2. It will boast cylinder deactivation tech

Despite featuring just three cylinders, the upcoming Fiesta ST will employ cylinder deactivation technology, which has already been announced for the new 1,0-litre EcoBoost engine. So, when coasting or cruising with light demand on the engine, the system will automatically stop fuel delivery and valve operation for one of the engine’s cylinders. The result? An “anticipated” CO2 output of 114 g/km, according to Ford.

3. It will have three drive modes

With the current Fiesta ST, you simply climb in and blast off. But the next-generation model will feature three selectable drive modes. Each mode will feature distinct settings for the engine mapping, traction control, electronic stability control, exhaust sound and electronic power assisted steering. Something Ford calls “Electronic Sound Enhancement” technology (so, fake noise then) and an “active exhaust noise control valve” will also be altered according to the drive mode selected.

4. The interior is a big step up…

Judging by the press images, the cabin of the new model will be a big step up from the outgoing Fiesta ST. Ford says the next-gen model will offer “more personalisation options than ever before”, with buyers set to be able to choose from a range of trim elements for the gear lever, steering wheel, door pulls and decorative dashboard trim. The cabin will boast supportive Recaro seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel, while Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system (compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) will come with floating, tablet-inspired touchscreens measuring up to eight inches.

5. Six-speed manual stays!

While the official media release makes no mention of transmissions, the press photography shows a six-speed manual gearbox. And that’s something of a relief, considering how some automakers have killed off their three-pedal hot hatches (we’re looking at you, Renault, with your Clio) of late. Whether an self-shifting model will join the range, however, remains to be seen…

New Fiesta ST makes 147kW with three cylinders

The ST version of Ford’s all-new Fiesta takes the big-power-from-little-engine theme to the extreme with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol that produces 147kW and 290Nm. That’s 13kW more than the 1.6-litre turbo four in the current model musters.

The stressed little engine will get the new ST from standstill to 100km/h in a mere 6.7 seconds, according to Ford, and it’s packed with fuel saving technologies for when you’re not attempting the latter. Not only does the fuel delivery system combine traditional port and direct fuel injection, but it can also deactivate one of the cylinders when the load is light.

Drivers can now choose between three drive modes that affect the engine, exhaust, steering as well as stability control, with Normal for everyday driving, Sport for fast roads and Track mode for, well you know. Traction control is disabled completely in this mode, while the electronic stability control is set to wide-slip mode, and can be switched off completely through a separate switch. A torque vectoring system that applies brake force to the inside wheel is also in place to help you slice those tight bends with minimal understeer.

The driving modes alter the sound track too, with an active noise control exhaust valve on hand to sweeten that off-beat three-cylinder squeal and liven the mood, along with those big-bolstered Recaro bucket seats and flat-bottomed ST-badged steering wheel.

The interior can be personalised through various styling packs and an array of different trim elements for the dashboard inlays, steering wheel, gear lever and door pulls. There’s only one external flavour, but the car is appropriately dressed with a mesh grille, rear spoiler as well 18-inch alloys, and buyers can opt for a new colour called Liquid Blue.

Ford’s latest Sync3 touch-screen system provides the entertainment, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keeping you zoned into you phone, and the options list includes a fancy B&O Play Sound System.

The ST will be sold in three- and five-door guises. We’re currently awaiting word on when the first units are expected in South Africa.
