2018 Ford Fiesta ST (Generation 3)

That engine is more highly strung than my ex-ex-ex. Also I can't decide whether those mags are good looking or "try hard".

No Ford Fiesta RS planned

Ford won't an RS-badged hot hatchback to sit above the new Fiesta ST, bosses confirm, but versions with more power are still possible

Ford has ruled out the creation of a Ford Fiesta RS model in the new generation Fiesta line-up.

Speaking to Autocar at the Geneva motor show, the Ford Fiesta ST’s chief programme engineer Matthias Tonn said that “there was always room in the range, but we don’t develop it”, speaking in reference to a potential RS.

An RS was frequently rumoured throughout to sit above the last generation Fiesta ST, but never materialised. Tonn was emphatic in saying that the same would be true of this generation of Fiesta, too.

Tonn said that a model similar to the last Fiesta ST200 was possible in this generation of Fiesta ST towards the end of its life, but that was not in the plan yet. Indeed, the Fiesta ST itself is one year away from production, according to Tonn, and development work on the car was still ongoing.

Ford will also maintain its close relationship with Mountune, but Mountune has yet to be involved in developing its own version of the new Fiesta ST.

New Ford Fiesta ST in South Africa

2018 will see the arrival of the all-new Ford Fiesta ST aka the Ultra Mobile and if you listen carefully, you can already hear all the boets fist-pumping in anticipation of this auspicious occasion!

Big news is that this new model is the first ever Ford Performance vehicle to make use of a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder motor and, while sharing a platform with the model it replaces, is the first Fiesta to feature selectable drive modes, enabling steering, engine and stability controls to be configured to Normal, Sport and Track modes. Yoh boet!

Unfortunately, along with the drive modes, we’ll have to put up with Ford’s nauseating and quite frankly miserable Electronic Sound Enhancement Technology which, in short, makes a dreary and depressing come through the vehicle’s speaker system in order to artificially enhance the sound of the engine. We have already been unfortunate enough to endure this in both the 2.3 Ecoboost and 5.0 V8 Mustangs and there’s not much to say really other than no. Just no.

Outputs of 149 kW and 290 N.m. are hugely impressive from a 3-cylinder motor and if you are able to block out Martin Garrix and the shocking sound enhancement, you might even be able to hear a fruity and characterful 3-pot thrum coming from within the engine bay on your sprint from 0-100 km/h which will take 6.7 seconds. A clever little motor, it is also able to shut off one of its cylinders during low-load conditions in order to save fuel, an industry first in a 3-cylinder motor, and thus resulting in emissions as low as 114 g/km.

The current generation Fiesta ST met much praise when launched in 2013 and was even crowned as Top Gear’s Car of the Year 2013. Unsurprisingly then, it still sells in droves to this day thanks to its loyal following of tank top owners and rave-goers. It also has one of the best front-wheel-drive chassis’ money can buy so it’s a good thing then that this will be carried over to the new model

There is no word on pricing yet but we can expect to see the first units in South Africa during the first half of 2018.

I don't know about this one.

I'm rather bummed that it's no quicker than the model it replaces and for all the talk of a sport button and "engine tech featuring cylinder deactivation" I'm worried it's not going to be as good as the current one, which in fairness is one of the best Fords ever made.

Three-cylinder Ford Ecoboost engine will soon lead brand’s sales

Once Ford's 1.5-litre Ecoboost has spread through the range, more Ecoboost three-cyclinder engines will be being sold by the brand than any other format

Ford will soon be selling more Ecoboost three-cylinder engines in Europe than any other format, once the new 1.5-litre version, launched in 198bhp form on the new Fiesta ST, spreads through its range.

Ford’s Europe product development chief, Joe Bakaj, has hinted that the engine will go as far up the range as the Mondeo, for which the existing 1.0-litre engine is already used. Although it has been expanded once already, the Ecoboost triple is unlikely to get any bigger, said Bakaj.

“A capacity of 500cc per cylinder is about right for thermal efficiency,” he said. “Besides, we don’t need cars to get more powerful. We need them to get lighter.”

Ford is also about to start selling its new generation of multi-speed automatic transmissions, developed with GM, in Europe. The gearboxes will be used first in the updated Ford Mustang but are coming in the wider range.

The new gearboxes will work especially well in downsized turbocharged engines, Bakaj said. Whereas on step-off a dual-clutch gearbox must depend initially on the nonturbo low-end torque of the engine, the torque converter of the new Ford-GM multispeed gearboxes provides better assistance.

Preview: 2018 VW Polo GTI vs 2018 Ford Fiesta ST

2018 will be a busy year for the compact hot hatchback segment: the South African market will see the introductions of the next-generation Ford Fiesta ST and all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI.

While both cars have been revealed internationally and we have some details, it's too early to tell what the local market's cars will be specified with. However, the recent introduction of the Polo GTI now makes a like-for-like comparison worthwhile...

Developed from the ground up using Volkswagen's MQB AO platform, the new Polo measures 4 053 mm in length, 1 7511 mm in width and 1 446 mm in height. Compared with the outgoing Polo, it is 81 mm longer, 63 mm wider and 7 mm lower.

Meanwhile, over at the Blue Oval, the new Fiesta looks similar to its predecessor, but it's 71 mm longer and 12 mm wider. The bonnet loses its centre bulge, the grille is wider and the headlamps smaller and more elongated.
Whereas the Fiesta ST features a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbopetrol, the Polo GTI Volkswagen has a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine.

Ford is sticking with a manual gearbox, while Volkswagen is standing by its DSG dual clutch transmission.

Engines

We have an interesting battle on our hands as the two brands are headed in different directions when it comes to engines. Ford is continuing with its downsizing ethos, while Volkswagen is doing the opposite and upsizing.

Let's start with the Ford Fiesta ST. Under its bonnet is a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces peak outputs 147 kW and 290 Nm of torque, plus Ford is claiming a 0-100 kph sprint time of 6.7 seconds. This newcomer is the first Ford Performance model to feature a 3-cylinder motor and it'll be the first time we will see a Fiesta ST with selectable driving modes. They are: Normal, Sport and Track, each one of which is pretty self-explanatory. As if 3 cylinders aren't few enough, the motor features cylinder deactivation to save fuel.

In the red corner, Volkswagen has wedged a 2.0-litre turbocharged motor into the new Polo GTI. Engineering aficionados may be interested to know that this mill is essentially a detuned Golf engine. It has outputs of 147 kW, but Volkswagen has not yet announced a maximum torque figure.

The previous generation 1.8-litre motor boasted 141 kW and 250 Nm, so we predict that it'll have between 260 and 290 Nm. Performance figures have not yet been confirmed either, but based on claim for the previous generation's car of 6.7 seconds for 0 to 100 kph, we'd be surprised if it doesn't do at least 6.5 seconds to 100 kph.

Gearboxes

There are no surprises here: Volkswagen will be sticking to its dual clutch transmission (DSG) with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles for the Polo GTI and Ford will only offer a 6-speed manual gearbox exclusively in its Fiesta ST.

Interiors

From a quick glance to compare the interiors of the ST (top) and GTI (above) it is clear that the ST retains its "working class hero" appeal (well, at least to an extent). Apart from the obligatory racier ST detailing (and sporty aluminium pedals), a colour touchscreen infotainment system and climate control console are the only overt nods to luxury in the Ford. The Polo GTI's interior, however, is dominated by piano black trim, metallic inserts, the Active Info Display (instead of a conventional instrument panel) and the fascia's integral touchscreen.

Predictions

Based on the current models where the Ford Fiesta ST has impressed due to its fun-to-drive traits and old-school analogue feel, while the Volkswagen Polo GTI delivers quick performance with ease of use and daily drive comfort, we expect nothing to change.

Ford is determined to stick with a manual gearbox for the ST, but by offering additional driving modes, the Blue Oval demonstrates its belief that Fiesta owners would like to tailor their cars' performance characteristics. Those who know what they're getting into will undoubtedly adore the new Fiesta ST: it is still all about unfiltered driving fun.

On the other hand, the Volkswagen Polo GTI will continue doing what it does best. It's a brisk car and while it lacks that involvement that comes with a manual transmission, it'll outshine the Fiesta in the comfort and daily driving stakes thanks to its refinement and convenience of an automatic transmission. The Polo GTI will be the sensible choice as it comes in four-door hatchback, while the Fiesta ST is only available in 3-door body shape.

We're keen to put these two against each other when they finally arrive in South Africa at some point in 2018. It's certainly going to be a close call!
