Jaguar Land Rover to use BMW platform (and revive Freelander badge)?

A fresh report out of the United Kingdom claims Jaguar Land Rover plans to build a pair of small crossovers on a BMW platform, while also using its soon-to-expand agreement with the German firm to revive the Freelander badge.

According to Autocar, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW are set to expand their partnership – which already officially involves electric drive units and is set to (unofficially) move into engine supply – to include the sharing of an “advanced small car platform”.

The report says Jaguar plans to build two crossovers – one in a conventional body style and the other bearing a coupé-like roofline – on BMW’s latest FAAR transverse-engined architecture. Both are expected to wear badges using the “-Pace” suffix (with earlier rumours suggesting monikers of A-Pace and B-Pace were on the cards).

Jaguar E-Pace to follow XF and F-Pace with 2020 overhaul

Jaguar will update its smallest SUV just two years after launch, bringing it into line with the latest XE saloon

Jaguar is planning a batch of updates for its E-Pace SUV, joining the upcoming 2020 XF and F-Pace in a brand-wide range overhaul.

First prototypes have been spotted undergoing road testing in disguise outside the maker’s development facilities in Gaydon, Warwickshire. The images don’t reveal much, but given what's covered up, we can expect a lightly reshaped grille and new lights at both the front and rear.

The grille-mounted front sensors appear to have been modified, too, suggesting Jaguar will introduce a more advanced array of driver assistance technology in the new model.

2020 Jaguar E-Pace: major update brings new platform, PHEV option

Compact SUV gets a cutting-edge line-up, with both mild and plug-in models added

Jaguar’s updated range is now complete with the unveiling of the revised-for-2020 E-Pace. Far from being just a facelift, the small SUV has moved to a new platform to allow it to accommodate both mild-hybrid and plug-in powertrains.

The 2020 E-Pace follows on from the recently overhauled XE, XF and F-Pace, with the F-Type updated last year. The revisions here are arguably more extensive, though, as the old Ford-related D8 platform has been ditched for Jaguar Land Rover’s newer PTA platform. It’s the same change that the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque made in 2019.

Jaguar claims the new underpinnings benefit handling, ride and overall refinement thanks to improved suspension attachment stiffness. But the main purpose has been to transform the powertrain offerings.

Six of the seven new engines are hybridised. Only the fleet-focused front-wheel-drive, manual 161bhp diesel entry point isn’t. That same unit in nine-speed automatic, all-wheel-drive form receives an efficiency-boosting 48V mild-hybrid system, with the small lithium ion battery mounted under the boot floor. A 201bhp version of that powertrain is also available.

The most significant petrol addition is the plug-in hybrid model. It mates a 197bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with a 107bhp electric rear axle motor and 15kWh battery under the boot floor. Jaguar claims a 0-60mph time of 6.1sec (making it the fastest-accelerating E-Pace available), CO2 emissions of 44g/km and up to 141mpg. Claimed range on a full charge is 34 miles.

Refreshed Jaguar E-Pace moves to new platform and gains Sport variant

Jaguar has unwrapped its facelifted E-Pace, switching the crossover to a new platform and adding both a plug-in hybrid variant and a P300 Sport model.

The refreshed range is expected to arrive in South Africa in the first half of 2021, though the line-up's exact composition has yet to be revealed.

Now running on the British firm’s latest Premium Transverse Architecture, the updated E-Pace benefits from what Jaguar calls “improved” front suspension attachment-point stiffness, reduced vibration and harshness, and enhanced comfort and refinement.

So, what about that P300 Sport derivative? Well, the new range-topper employs the firm's turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, sending 221 kW and 400 N.m to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Jaguar says that’s enough for a sprint from zero 100 km/h in 6,9 seconds.

The P300 Sport furthermore features items such as active damping and adaptive dynamics, while running on 20-inch five-spoke allows and benefitting from the Black Exterior Pack. Inside, you’ll find illuminated treadplates, a Meridian audio system and sports seats.

Pricing! Refreshed Jaguar E-Pace (with 221 kW Sport) heading to SA

Jaguar South Africa has released local pricing for its refreshed E-Pace range, which gains both a new 221 kW Sport variant and plug-in hybrid derivatives.

Revealed at the end of October 2020, the facelifted E-Pace is expected to launch in South Africa at some point in the first half of 2021.

Now running on the British firm’s latest Premium Transverse Architecture, the updated E-Pace benefits from improved front suspension attachment-point stiffness, reduced vibration and harshness, and enhanced comfort and refinement.

The local line-up looks set to be trimmed slightly from 12 variants to ten (again all featuring all-wheel drive), with pricing – before options, of course – running from R874 210 to R1 236 300. Have a look at full range pricing at the bottom of this story (once again, hat-tip to our studious associates over at duoporta.com).

Pricing:

Jaguar E-Pace D200 AWD R-Dynamic S: R874 210
Jaguar E-Pace D200 AWD R-Dynamic SE: R904 810
Jaguar E-Pace P250 AWD R-Dynamic S: R938 540
Jaguar E-Pace D200 AWD R-Dynamic HSE: R945 010

Doesn't this step on the toes of the F-Pace a bit? F-Pace is bigger, looks much better, comes with 6 cylinders and the price isn't too far off? Why would you then buy this? For example, that R1m plus models could easily bag you an f-pace.

Nearly new buying guide: Jaguar E-Pace

Bargain hunters should prick up their ears, for the reasons

With the imminent arrival of the refreshed E-Pace, now is a good time to revisit the smallest SUV in the Jaguar range, because while everyone’s distracted by revised infotainment and new plug-in hybrid technology, the canny used car buyer can look into what they could save on the outgoing version featured here.

Under the stubby bonnet of the E-Pace is either a 2.0-litre petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel engine, both available in varying states of tune. The petrol line-up encompasses 198bhp, 245bhp and 295bhp versions and the diesel units can be had in 148bhp, 178bhp and 236bhp forms.

All E-Paces come with dual-zone climate control, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and LED headlights, but S trim adds leather seats (electrically adjustable in the front) and a more sophisticated infotainment system. Pricier SE and HSE models add bigger wheels, a wider range of electric seat adjustments and increasingly more safety kit. If you want a sportier-looking E-Pace, seek out the R-Dynamic version of each trim level.

Jaguar E-Pace P300e 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

It’s a really interesting addition to the small SUV PHEV ranks (if that’s not too many qualifiers for you): not because it does anything radically different, but because it’s a bit more interesting to drive than most rivals.

As a plug-in hybrid, it’s not cheap - our mid-level trim is nearer £50k than feels comfortable - but it does feel like there’s now a reason to buy an E-Pace over rivals. That can only be a good thing.

Facelifted Jaguar E-Pace touches down: SA pricing

The facelifted Jaguar E-Pace SUV has hit South African shores sporting a new look, fresh engines and updated tech. The new line-up is priced between R868 000 and R1 236 000 (see full pricing below).

On the design front, Jaguar’s smallest SUV gains a revised grille with a new mesh design as well as new all-LED headlights featuring a ‘Double J’ DRL signature. The changes are equally subtle round back, where you’ll see a new mesh insert on the rear bumper and new LED tailights that boast Jaguar’s chicane graphic.

Inside there’s a new Pivo Pro infotainment system that’s operated through an 11,4-inch curved-glass high-definition touchscreen that is said to be almost 50 percent larger and three times brighter than the previous system. The new operating system allows for over-the-air updates and also includes Google and Microsoft Outlook calendar integration.

New plug-in hybrid option

Jaguar has added a plug-in hybrid powertrain option in the form of a new P300e model that pairs a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engine to an 80 kW rear-mounted electric motor to produce system outputs of 227 kW and 540 N.m. According to Jaguar, the P300e PHEV, when fully charged, will allow drivers to cover up to 55 km on electric power alone.

The E-Pace is also available with a range of 2-litre turbocharged Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. Petrol options come in the form of a P250 with 184 kW and 365 N.m on tap and a P300 (non-hybrid) with 221 kW and 400 N.m. The latter is said to be capable of a 6.9 second 0-100 km/h time, although the PHEV beats it to the post with a 6.5 second sprint time.

All engine derivatives are paired with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and permanent all-wheel drive, while the range-topping P300 Sport also features Adaptive Dynamics as standard.

Jaguar E-Pace gains R-Dynamic Black Edition trim from £40,945

Upgrades include gloss-black exterior trim and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Jaguar has added a new R-Dynamic Black Edition trim to the E-Pace line-up, with changes to the small SUV’s exterior design and enhanced connectivity.

The R-Dynamic Black Edition starts from £40,945 and is based on R-Dynamic S trim. It receives black Jaguar badging and a gloss-black finish to its side vents, mirror caps, front bumper and front grille.

The E-Pace also gains a new exterior paint colour, Ostuni White, along with satin-grey 19in alloy wheels, red brake calipers, privacy glass and a panoramic roof.

“The new R-Dynamic Black Edition elevates the compact SUV’s dynamic design and visual appeal with a bespoke choice of exterior elements,” Jaguar said.

Inside, an 11.4in infotainment touchscreen is standard (up from 10.in) and Jaguar promises greater levels of refinement, comfort and technology.
