How much does the Jaguar E-Pace in South Africa?

The Jaguar E-Pace range starts from R874 210 and is sold with a 5 year/100 000 km maintenance plan and roadside assistance plan. This Jaguar E-Pace 300 Sport retails for R1 057 940 before options.

Verdict

Make no mistake… We loved our time behind the ‘wheel of the revised Jaguar E-Pace 300 Sport. Not only is the E-Pace the most satisfying-to-drive premium crossover, its new-look interior makes everything else in the segment look either old-fashioned or cluttered inside.

However, while we adored the Jaguar’s driving dynamics and cabin layout, the limited space for rear occupants and decidedly firm ride quality count against it, as does its steep asking price. Also, shouldn’t a premium crossover ideally offer a bit more interior space? Worryingly for Jaguar, there already exists a sister product that offers that: the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Also in the ballpark is the Range Rover Evoque. Both of those products are highly rated and more versatile. Granted, they wouldn’t be as fun to drive as the Jaguar and they don’t feature the fancy Pivi Pro infotainment system… yet.

Should you buy a revised Jaguar E-Pace? This segment is jam-packed with vehicles of a high calibre and if you value head-turning style and driving enjoyment above outright occupant space in a premium crossover, then look no further. There are some excellent turbodiesel and -petrol derivatives lower down in the E-Pace range; they may not be as fast as the 300 Sport, but they arguably offer better value.

REVIEW | Jaguar E-Pace 300 Sport is the athlete in the range, but with an Achilles heel

• The new Jaguar E-Pace was launched in SA earlier this year.

• Several models make up the line-up, which include the 300 Sport derivative.

• The 300 Sport is powered by a 221kW/400Nm petrol engine.

In summary

While the Wheels24 team is fond of Jaguar vehicles, the E-Pace 300 Sport is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, it oozes all the traits that make Jaguars such special vehicles. This Jaguar is not a sports vehicle, but its drivetrain and the subsequent fuel economy seem to suggest otherwise.

If regular visits to your nearest fueling station are not of concern, the E-Pace 300 Sport might just fit the bill. Alternatively, any one of the diesel options or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model - slotting in above the 300 Sport - could provide more smiles per km.

Test summary

The updated E-Pace brings a dynamic and refined presence thanks to refreshed styling and additional specification both inside and out. As a lifestyle conveyance, it’s one of the most desirable in its segment thanks to its luxury, comfort and how it breaks the cookie-cutter mould of the Germans. From a dynamic point of view – however, hamstrung by its hefty kerb weight – the little cub left us wanting more. Jaguar Land Rover has pledged that all its cars will be electrified by 2025, so, perhaps the hybrid-powered P300e offering 227 kW and 540 N.m of torque, will be the smart future-proof option. Only time will tell. Still, tracking the uptake of dual energy E-Paces locally in the lead up to the firm’s 2025 deadline will be intriguing to watch.

Jaguar E-PACE 2022 UK Review - Improved...But Better? - OSV

Jaguar's much improved E-PACE brings the company's brand values into the growing market for compact, lifestyle-orientated SUVs.

There are smarter looks and improved infotainment, plus as before, sporty cues are borrowed from the Coventry maker's F-TYPE sportscar.

Under the skin, the latest Premium Transverse Architecture underpinnings hail from the successful Range Rover Evoque, which means that this little Jag can now offer a more efficient range of electrified engines.

All the ingredients seem to be in place then, for a strong package.
