Verdict

The new bits and changes to the Lexus NX300 are incremental, but you're left feeling that not much has changed in comparison to the model we drove back in 2015. The powertrain and all-wheel driveability are good, but the issues we had with the cabin ergonomics weren't addressed and ease of use is average. The Lexus NX does offer the best standard specification in class, but the cabin doesn't quite have that wow factor to match up to the competition. However, it is solidly-built and kudos to the manufacturer are due: the test unit's cabin exhibited no rattles or squeaks.

It's a good executive SUV and if you land up going down this road, it's unlikely you'll be disappointed with the ownership experience. However, this segment is the flavour of the month right now and everyone brand is building a luxury SUV. Jaguar has expanded and built a smaller E-Pace, BMW has introduced the new X3 (and is about to launch the X2 locally) and we suspect that yet another Mercedes-Benz SUV is about to roll out of Stuttgart. Even the passionate Italians at Alfa Romeo have had a go and created the Stelvio and it's a solid product. The competition in this segment is inordinately tough and the Lexus doesn't quite have what it takes to be a segment leader. Is it the worst of the bunch? No, not at all – it just requires a test drive... and leap of faith. With some strategic thinking, the forthcoming UX baby SUV could be a winner.

Lol@4yr service plan for a 600k car. Even a Rav 4 has a longer plan. Small wonder it sells so poorly.

Lexus NX gains new entry-level front-wheel drive model

New NX FWD will be cheapest model in range, with firm claiming lower running costs and emissions

Lexus has expanded its NX SUV range with a new front-wheel drive variant that the firm claims will be cheaper to run than the existing four-wheel drive car.

The new front-wheel drive NX is also the most affordable version of the Japanese firm's mid-sized crossover, opening the line-up at £35,860. Four-wheel-drive cars start from £37,110.

The NX FWD will continue to save drivers money after purchase, with its reduced emissions (161g/km of CO2 compared to the existing car’s 171g/km) placing it in a lower road tax band. Lexus says this results in an annual saving of £330.

2022 Lexus NX leak previews design overhaul, new interior

New images posted online suggest the interior of premium mid-sized SUV will be transformed

Images of the second-generation Lexus NX have leaked online, ahead of an expected official unveiling sometime in the next few months.

Posted yesterday on the Club Lexus forum, the pictures - said to be captured from a leaked video now taken offline - reveal that the premium mid-sized SUV will be brought closer into line with the newer UX crossover but won't be subject to a radical design overhaul.

Lexus's trademark front grille design remains but with a new mesh pattern to subtly differentiate the new NX from its predecessor, while the headlights have been lightly reshaped and now look to use LED technology. Expanded lower air intakes contribute to a more aggressive stance, while the front splitter looks to have been extended - likely for improved aerodynamics.

The current NX's heavily creased sides appear to have been smoothed out for a cleaner look and a new light bar spans the width of the rear end, which also gains new vertical air channels, a new bumper and sharper numberplate recess.

All-new Lexus NX teased ahead of June 12 reveal

One of Lexus South Africa’s best selling vehicles is due for a total refresh soon, with the company planning to pull the covers off an all new version of the midsize SUV on Saturday, June 12.

Lexus isn’t telling us much about the new NX just yet, but the luxury carmaker has posted a teaser image that shows an interesting new LED tail light arrangement that spreads across the tailgate. We’re not sure what they’ve done at the front but being a modern Lexus you can surely bank on a whole lot of ‘spindle’ grille.

As for the cabin, Lexus is likely to ditch that clunky touchpad set-up that’s found in the current model for a modern touchscreen infotainment system.

It’s also expected that the new Lexus NX will migrate to Toyota’s latest TNGA modular platform, thereby sharing many of its oily bits with the new-generation Toyota Rav4.

New 2021 Lexus NX: firm's first plug-in hybrid brings 302bhp

PHEV SUV will join a traditional hybrid when the secod-gen NX hits the UK later this year

Lexus has ushered in the second-generation version of its NX crossover, which has gained a 302bhp plug-in hybrid option along with a bold new cabin design and evolved exterior styling.

The latest iteration of Lexus’s best-selling model in Europe arrives shortly after the brand’s announcement that it will ramp up its electrification efforts with 10 new hybrid, PHEV and pure-electric models by 2025.

The new NX forms a key part of that assault, bringing with it the NX 450h+. This is the first PHEV offered by Lexus, which has previously used parent company Toyota’s ‘self-charging’ hybrid technology for its electrified powertrains.

The NX 450h+ uses the same petrol-electric set-up as the closely related Toyota RAV4 and Suzuki Across SUVs. It pairs a 182bhp 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with a 180bhp electric motor on the front axle and a 54bhp motor at the rear for permanent four-wheel drive and a 0-62mph time of just over 6.0sec.

With the electric motors drawing their reserves from a floor-mounted 18.1kWh lithium ion battery, the NX 450h+ claims an electric-only driving range of 40 miles and can run with the petrol engine off at up to 84mph. When the battery is depleted, the system operates like a conventional Lexus ‘self-charging’ hybrid, which is said to make it 20% more efficient than rival PHEV SUVs.
