McLaren 720S by MSO revealed as one-off special

Bespoke model features unique tri-tone paint scheme to showcase 202mph open-top supercar's aerodynamics

McLaren has unveiled a special one-off version of its 720S Spider by MSO at the Geneva motor show. The car features a unique colour scheme to highlight its aerodynamics and showcase the capability of its customisation division.

Developed by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), the bespoke version of the recently launched 710bhp open-top supercar is painted in a blend of three metallic paints, which are designed to emphasise the aerodynamics of the Super Series model.

The firm says the tri-tone finish, which it calls Coriolis, is an advancement of a technology first shown on the 720S Velocity by MSO at Geneva in 2017. McLaren says the paint scheme took 260 hours to finish.

The special 720S Spider also sports a number of other custom features, including the use of carbonfibre for the tonneau cover, diffuser and B-pillars, as well as a sports exhaust and electrochromatic glass on the retractable hard-top.

The interior is finished in Alcantara and leather and features MSO bespoke colours and trim, along with a number of carbonfibre components.

The mechanical elements of the one-off 720S are unchanged from the standard car's, with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 568lb ft and enables a 0-62mph time of 2.9sec. The machine has a top speed of 202mph with the roof down.

Watch Stock McLaren 720S Hit 215 MPH (346 KM/H), Higher Than Claimed Top Speed

The crew from Johnny Gohmer Proving Grounds recently got a Dodge Challenger SRT Demon to hit 211 mph and now they managed to get a 720S to their facility .

The McLaren 720S is beyond doubt one of the most exciting supercars to come out of Britain and it boasts of a top speed of 212 mph (341 km/h). Well it seems that claim was a little conservative as you will see in the video below that they got it to 215 mph (346 km/h).

McLaren 720S Spider 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

Autocar quite likes the 720S coupé and we've written at length about the car's superb electro-hydraulic steering, outstanding ride quality and all-round usability, which is totally out of kilter with this level of performance.

The Spider is the same – 12% better in one respect, even – but those willing to pay the extra for a senior supercar that can go topless will have different priorities from those who'd only ever want the hard-top. They'll be prepared to trade less focus for greater flair; and for all its brilliance and 'completeness' elsewhere, the fact is that this McLaren doesn’t offer quite the same theatre as alternatives from Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Even so, and even with four extra cylinders and a willingness to make that fact known at any and every opportunity, the case for the Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster is difficult to make because the McLaren is simply much more rewarding to drive. The Ferrari 488 Spider is a tougher competitor. With a sweeter twin-turbo V8 and more playful handling, it just about beats the McLaren for overall drop-top appeal, although in character the two could hardly be further apart and each holds immense appeal. The new Porsche 911 Speedster is the wild card. It's an unconventional rival but sensationally good to drive, brimming with character and every bit as special.

Can you go wrong? Given the calibre of the field, not really, but if you're wondering which of these cars offers the least compromise compared with its coupé counterpart, you're looking at it.

TopCar Give McLaren 720S A Whole New Level Of “Fury”

The mighty slayer known as the McLaren 720S is certainly striking in stock form but now Russian aftermarket tuner TopCar thinks it can improve the looks of the British supercar with its upcoming body kit.

These are just renderings for now but the tuner has built a body kit that gives the 720S an aggressive makeover without spoiling the car’s aesthetics and adding plenty more presence.

DMC Rhein Gives McLaren 720S 1000 HP (746 KW) And Senna Styling

DMC has revealed the first official teaser shot of their new offering for the McLaren 720S called Rhein and it is rather drastic.

The tuner has announced that only 10 units will be available globally, each one with a different color and they have been allocated already.

Two units are destined for mainland China, another one for Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macau and one apiece for North America, Switzerland, South East Asia, Japan, Korea, Russia, and Dubai.

McLaren 720S Longtail Could Arrive Next Year

Next year, McLaren Automotive will be turning 10 years old and although they will not be too focused on this, they will be focused on the GT, the Speedtail and two new models that arguably distil the firm’s most expressive impulses.

One of these is the rumoured two-seat Speedster we spoke about last month and the other is a Longtail version of the mighty 720S.

Not much is known about the Speedster offering but if the previous (and current) LT offerings are anything to go by, then you can bet the 720S Longtail will be quite something. The regular 720S has already enjoyed numerous accolades for its handling and performance and both aspected will be revised as they seek to enhance driver engagement.

Precise details of how the firm intends to take its Super Series car to another level remain under wraps, although we can assume that it will have applied the established blueprint: improved aero, reduced weight, a more track-focused chassis and, yes, increased power.

“Two Mods” Allow McLaren 720S To Hit 60 MPH In Just 1.8 Seconds

DragTimes recently shared some footage of slightly modded McLaren 720S’ not only dipping into the 8’s in quarter-mile runs but also hitting 60 mph (96 km/h) in an astonishing 1.8 seconds.

Watch some of the launches in the video below and you will see why they are achieving such immense sprints. Yes, the cars in question have received an exhaust mod of sorts and an ECU tune making it just two mods but some are fitted with super sticky rubber which DragTimes does not consider a mod so take it as you wish.

The Truth About Buying a McLaren - A Masterclass in Bad Service & How NOT to Treat Your Customers - JayEmm on Cars

Recently, my friend James and his father both bought brand new McLarens. Unfortunately, the experience was less than ideal and one of the cars wound up being replaced.

Because you'll all know that doesn't normally happen, I thought you all deserved to know the truth about what happened, and so here it is.

The Truth About Buying A McLaren, Part 2: Woking's Response to my Viral Video (And MORE Problems!) - JayEmm on Cars

Before Christmas, I released a video chronicling the poor experience my friend James and his father John suffered at the hands of McLaren Manchester.

In this follow-up video, I address some of the most commonly asked questions that arose from the first.

EKanoo Racing McLaren 720S Smashed Quarter Mile In 8.85s

The McLaren 720S is able to smash the quarter-mile sprint in 9.9 seconds from the factory which is as fast as a Bugatti Chiron over the same distance.

The tuning team known as Ekanoo Racing recently shared a video of their menacing matte black 720S setting a quarter-mile time of 8.85 seconds which apparently makes it the fastest 720S in the world.

They claim to use the turbos from the factory but have tinkers here and there until the car produces 962 whp (1,159 hp; 864 kW). They executed a race tune, then added its own performance downpipes and BMC high-performance air filters, and filled her up with MS109 gasoline. This is highly oxygenated fuel that produces more power than any other unleaded fuel, included premium unleaded.
