'Purchased Friday, totalled on Saturday' - driver crashes McLaren sports car worth R3.9-million a day after it was bought

Imagine crashing your new car the day after you purchased it. Now imagine it's a sports car worth millions.

Authorities report that a driver crashed a McLaren 720, 24hrs after purchasing the blisteringly fast sports car.

According to The Washington Post, the crash occurred during the early hours of July 14 when the car crashed into a tree in Fairfax County. Parts of the vehicle were scattered everywhere.

Just not his day

Fortunately the driver did not sustain serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Local police estimates the McLaren to be valued at around R3.9-million ($300 000).

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (well, actually, in 1687 at the University of Cambridge) a clever fellow called Isaac Newton proved that force can be defined as mass multiplied by acceleration.

Since both mass and acceleration can be easily measured it was thus possible for the first time to define a unit of force, which was named the Newton in his honour. However, if you change the subject of the equation, it can be written as A=F/M, or acceleration is equal to force divided by mass - and that’s the rule that applies to automotive performance.

If you’re an American drag racer, you increase acceleration by adding more force; if your name is Colin Chapman you do it by reducing mass. And at McLaren, they do both. The Woking whitecoats also get very serious about reducing drag, by improving the airflow over the vehicle. This was something Isaac Newton didn’t have to contend with, because seventeenth-century air molecules showed proper respect and simply got out of the way.

In this video, however, it’s very much a factor in analysing the performance of the McLaren 750S from a scientific point of view, as Ryan W Conversano Ph.D - who really is a rocket scientist! - shows us how to quantify the huge forces acting on a high-performance vehicle, and how complex equations come together to create a supercar.

Conversano’s laid-back approach makes the ‘Science of Speed’ very accessible, and his explanations make sense to the least mathematical iof gearheads - but the science is rigorous and visuals fascinating.

Novitec pushes the McLaren 720S to the next level

The McLaren 720S is a supercar that we don’t see being tuned very often, likely since it’s plenty fast in its standard guise. However, Novitec figured it was time to give the McLaren some attention. The resulting 720S package includes some aerodynamic tweaks and a slight bump in power.

Using the Novitec N-tronic Power Stage 3 ECU kit, the 720S’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 gets a slight bump in power from the stock 527 kW and 770 N.m to 592 kW and 878 N.m. A stainless steel exhaust system, complete with metal catalysts and custom Novitec tailpipes, is fitted as well.

Despite the 720S being a razor-sharp supercar on its standard suspension, the custom package also features an upgrade in this area. The spring kit lowers the ride height to further improve the centre of gravity and is fully adjustable for the driver’s preference.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a Novitec build if there were no carbon-fibre aerodynamic additions. The 720S can be fitted with a front lip and spoiler, “flicks” and air intakes. Side panels, door-mirror covers, an engine cover, a side-wall intake rear bumper cover, a diffuser and a rear spoiler are all available, alongside other pieces. An array of alloy wheels is offered as well.

According to Novitec, this revised 720S will hit three figures from standstill in just 2,7 seconds (two-tenths quicker than standard, before topping out at a lofty 346 km/h. The tuner, though, has confirmed that a more powerful N-Largo edition is on the cards

McLaren 720S Track Pack

A new Track Pack specification for the McLaren 720S is now available, taking the British supercar to the next level for owners who want to exploit its formidable dynamic abilities on a circuit. With the wide breadth of 720S capability extended even further, the McLaren 720S Track Pack establishes a new pinnacle of track focus within McLaren's core Super Series line-up. The introduction follows the availability of a Track Pack for McLaren's Sports Series, which one in ten 570S buyers specify.

The introduction of the Track Pack for 720S comes as McLaren's new 720S GT3 race car moves into the next stage of its development programme. Further rigorous testing has been taking place throughout Europe, including earlier this week at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic where the two cars came together to share track time. To date, the McLaren Automotive Customer Racing division has tested extensively at six European circuits, with ten different drivers experiencing the car. The majority of track mileage has been covered by McLaren Automotive Factory Drivers, but the programme has also seen a number of Amateur racers providing further important feedback during the development process. A combination of multiple rig tests and track time has allowed completion of engine performance evaluation for the GT3 car.

Available now for the road-legal 720S, the Track Pack's individual features comprise functional and visual upgrades and deliver a weight-saving of 24kg. Based on 720S Performance specification - which, with hood air intakes, rear fender air intakes and door mirror casings in carbon fibre and engine bay ambient lighting, already turns heads in any pit lane or paddock - the Track Pack exterior features are Super-Lightweight 10-Spoke Forged Alloy Wheels, an MSO Defined Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre Active Rear Spoiler and a Sports Exhaust

Inside the expansive teardrop cabin, with its welcoming spaciousness and track-perfect visibility, body-hugging Lightweight Carbon Fibre Racing Seats in either regular or touring size are complemented by MSO Defined Satin Visual Carbon Fibre Extended Gearshift Paddles and a steering wheel trimmed in black Alcantara®, ensuring a purposeful racecar environment as well as delivering an ergonomic benefit. A titanium bar mounted behind the seats supports 6-point harnesses for both driver and passenger.

The Track Pack adds even more motorsport intent to a car designed from the outset to excel on both road and circuit and having a bespoke Track setting among its drive modes and a lightweight but incredibly strong and stiff carbon fibre Monocage II body structure at its core. McLaren's acclaimed 720ps twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine delivers acceleration from standstill to 200km/h (124mph) in just 7.8 seconds, with Proactive Chassis Control II active suspension and carbon-ceramic disc brakes optimising dynamic performance and braking.

Owners can analyse their track driving using another element of the Track Pack, namely the McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) system. Using three video cameras built into the car and advanced data-logging software, MTT allows a driver to monitor their performance and understand where opportunities to improve lie. A range of real-time data is displayed - such as lap times, sector splits and driver comparisons - as well as video footage to spot missed apexes and premature or delayed braking points.

The Track Pack adds £28,360 to the price of a McLaren 720S, which represents a saving over the cost of purchasing the individual Pack components separately. The 720S Coupe in Performance specification with Track Pack is available to order from McLaren Automotive retailers for 2019 delivery, priced from £224,700.

Track-focused Super Series model loses 24kg and gains Track driving mode

McLaren has launched a Track Pack for its 720S that promises to make it an “even lighter, more circuit-focused supercar for track enthusiasts".

The 720S Track Pack is the second such model in the British manufacturer's current line-up. The McLaren 570S Track Pack is also on sale and accounts for one in ten 570Ss sold.

Weight in the 720S Track Pack is reduced by 24kg, aided on the exterior by a carbonfibre active rear spoiler, super-lightweight 10-spoke alloy wheels and a sports exhaust.

Inside, there are carbonfibre racing seats, six-point hardness and a telemetry system.

The Track Pack also adds a bespoke Track driving mode.

Owners can analyse their track driving using the telemetry system. Using three video cameras built into the car and data-logging software, the system allows a driver to monitor performance and understand how they can improve. A range of real-time data is displayed – such as lap times, sector splits and driver comparisons – as well as video footage to spot missed apexes and premature or delayed braking points.

Performance on the 720S Track Pack remains unchanged over the standard model, so the 4.0-litre V8 engine propels the supercar from 0-124mph in 7.8sec.

The Proactive Chassis Control II active suspension and carbon-ceramic disc brakes also remain unchanged.

The Track Pack adds £28,360 to the price of the 720S, at £224,700. Customer deliveries will begin next year.

McLaren has recently unveiled its 720S GT3 racing car and begun an extensive testing programme ahead of its introduction in 2019. That car will cost £440,000 for ex-works versions.

Should I buy one?

That depends on what you want your 720S to be, and there is indeed a choice. This seminal Super Series McLaren is versatile enough to fulfil the duties of either a super-GT or a highly focused trackday car, with several intermediate roles.

If you’re for the former then stick to ‘Luxury’ trim and throw leather at the interior. Honestly, you couldn’t want for a more acquiescent but involving mid-engined super-cum-hypercar, and without the harness bar there’s useful luggage space on the rear deck.

This Track Pack is aimed at the other cohort. Those willing to spend £28,360 in excess of the £224,700 McLaren asks for the ‘Performance’ model.

That is an awful lot of money considering you might never use the telemetry or the cameras or the six-point racing harnesses, but for some it will be worth paying simply for the palpable sense you’re driving the most focussed 720S that exists. At least until those Nomex-wearing product planners give us the Longtail version.

McLaren reveals ‘stealth’ customised 720S

Specially themed 720S features F1 GTR-inspired enhancements and hand-painted exterior details

McLaren’s bespoke products arm, McLaren Special Operations (MSO), has unveiled a 720S Performance with a “stealth” design theme, inspired by the 1995 Le Mans-winning McLaren F1 GTR.

The theme was first shown at the 720S's unveiling at the 2017 Geneva motor show, alongside three other themes intended to demonstrate the “almost limitless” scope of possibilities from MSO.

McLaren is keen to capitalise on its MSO arm, because most of its buyers now choose some level of personalisation on their cars.

Built as a bespoke order for McLaren’s London dealership, the 720S Stealth Theme is finished in Sarthe Grey and named after the circuit at which the 1995 victory took place.

It has contrasting red accent lines along the length of the car, alongside red outer rims and a contrasting red spoke on each of the 10-spoke satin wheels. These visual enhancements were hand-painted in a process lasting nearly 200 hours, says McLaren.

Elsewhere, satin-finish carbonfibre trim is used for the front air intakes, wing mirrors and rear deck.

The standard 720S Performance features carbonfibre and Alcantara trim detailing throughout the interior, to which the MSO Stealth theme introduces contrasting red leather and stitching on the fascia, door panels and seats.

The 720S Stealth Theme uses the regular 710bhp twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol V8 engine, which is capable of pushing the car from 0-62mph in 2.8sec and up to a top speed of 212mph.

McLaren will not reveal pricing of bespoke models, but this car will cost considerably more than the £218,020 of the standard 720S Performance.

I really hope McLaren can be as good in F1 as their road cars cause they are seriously kicking some ass in that department. I know the McLaren Cars and McLaren racing is two different companies but the hope is there
 
McLaren to reveal new 720S Spider in December

McLaren confirms drop-top 720S as second model in its Track25 business plan

McLaren has released a preview image for its latest new model debut, the 720S Spider, ahead of an official reveal on 8 December.

The new drop-top follows on from the recently revealed Speedtail as McLaren’s second model in is £1.2bn Track25 business plan. The 720S Spider will be shown in full online at 8pm on 8 December before it goes on sale next year.

It joins the 570S Spider as McLaren’s second convertible model on sale. The preview image shows the front end of the 720S Spider will stay faithful to the hard top, but doesn't show the car's roof assembly. Detail's are scarce, but we're expecting the 720S Spider to feature a similar folding hard top roof, made from a number of lightweight composite panels, as it's lesser sibling.

That will mean an increase of round 50kg over the standard 720S, which could have a fractional impact on performance, with the increased aerodynamic drag likely lowering the top speed a bit from the coupe’s 212mph top out point.
