MG ZS EV electric SUV to make UK debut this month

Battery-powered version of MG's small SUV will be on display at the London motor show from 16-19 May

MG's first ever electric car, the ZS EV, will be on display for the first time in the UK this month ahead of sales beginning in September.

The brand will use the London motor show, which opens its doors on 16 May, as the venue for the model's debut. The brand also claims it has had 800 "expressions of interest" from buyers, the most it's ever had in Britain.

The Kia Soul EV rival was first revealed at the Guangzhou motor show in China last year, and will be sold alongside the existing petrol versions of the ZS.

While specifications have yet to be confirmed, the UK-bound ZS EV is expected to use the same front-mounted 148bhp electric motor as the model sold in China.

The car's lithium ion battery will reportedly be good for a 268-mile range on the old NEDC test cycle, and MG says it can achieve an 80% charge in as little as 30 minutes.

As a guide, the WLTP range of the Nissan Leaf is 28.5% lower than its NEDC range, and the same reduction would put the ZS EV at 192 miles.

MG has revealed that UK prices for launch editions of its first fully electric model, the ZS EV, will be significantly less than both the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia e-Niro.

MG ZS EV 2019 review

Should I buy one?

Certainly, if you’re in the market for an affordable electric car. Its strengths are jaunty styling, plenty of equipment, ease of driving, good quality and a seven-year warranty on battery and car.

Its weaknesses are an open roads range that doesn’t match the best and controls (especially steering) that could be improved. But the buying proposition, for electric-only customers, has to be one of the best on the market.

MG ZS EV first Drive - James and Kate

Today, James is testing out the all new MG ZS EV at the London press event. The ZS is now, in our opinion, the best value for money EV available to buy, coming in at £21,495 for the Excite variant and £23,495 for the Exclusive.

Join us while we take to the streets of London to find out just how good MG's latest offering really is.

Since filming we've been advised the ZS EV will benefit from an app from Q2 2020.

I legit think that if a good spec ZS (not EV) was offered locally & priced say R15k less than a base CX-3 it would establish a relatively healthy sales volume in a short space of time.

Same goes for the MG3 (manual & auto variants) as well - price them a bit lower than other budget econobox competitors like the Datsun Go or Renault Kwid, and they will make a serious dent (pun intended) in their sales figures.

MG ZS EV: first 1000 examples sell out in two weeks

Company matched UK government plug-in car grant for early examples, for a final cost of just £21,495

MG has revealed that the first 1000 UK examples of its ZS value EV have sold out in its first two weeks on sale, and has extended its attractive discount for early buyers to the next 1000 models.

The company matched the government's £3500 plug-in car grant for the first 1000 UK ZS buyers, bringing the entry-level 'Excite' variant's list price down to £21,495. The same offer also applied to the more luxurious 'Exclusive' trim, which costs £23,495. As an extra incentive, MG installed a domestic charging point at buyers' homes at no extra cost.

It has now been announced that this special offer has been extended to the next 1000 examples to be sold, too, although units sold from this point will not come as standard with a home charging point.

All New MG ZS EV - Full Review and Test - Chorley Group

Miles Roberts our Innovation Development Manager is back to talk about the ALL NEW MG ZS EV. MG Motor UK is set to launch its very first battery electric vehicle in the UK this autumn with the arrival of the MG ZS electric SUV.

With a full-sized boot and room for five, the MG ZS EV is the perfect car for people who want to go electric but also need the space and practicality of a compact SUV.

Since launch in November 2017, MG ZS has become a familiar sight on British roads, always propelled by unleaded petrol fuel. With prices starting from just £12,495, packed full of tech and sporting a 7-year warranty, MG ZS has become a popular choice amongst British car buyers.

From autumn, the petrol version will be joined by its zero emissions electric equivalent, bringing affordable electric motoring to the British public.

Daniel Gregorious, Head of Sales & Marketing at MG, said: “With the launch of our MG ZS electric SUV we’re delighted to be entering the electric car market at such an exciting time. With all the practicality and versatility of a compact SUV, a full-sized boot and room for five, ZS means electric without compromise. With MG’s trademark value-for-money approach, we’re confident that we can help more and more new car buyers to go electric”.

The MG ZS EV will be launched in the UK in autumn 2019. Full details, including pricing and specification, will be released closer to launch.

MG ZS EV 5 Day Test Drive And Review - James and Kate

This week we were lucky enough to have the new MG ZS EV on test for 5 days. We covered over 500 miles in that time and gave it a good family workout as the MG will potentially be replacing our Tesla Model S.

Follow me to find out how I got on, and if this will be our long term replacement or if it doesn't make the grade.

MG ZS EV affordable small electric crossover SUV 2019 - A quirky review | Fully Charged

Robert Llewellyn test drives the new, affordable small electric crossover SUV, the MG ZS EV (also known as the MG EZS).

Although there were some slight oddities and complexities (okay, quirks) with the driver interface and charging in the MG ZS EV, Robert really enjoyed driving this new entrant into the electric car market.

As predicted, electric cars are getting cheaper to buy, (they are already much cheaper to run).

Could this eco friendly SUV help bring electric vehicles to the masses?

The MG zero emissions ZS EV features a water-cooled 44.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a front-mounted electric motor which delivers 105 kW / 143 PS of power and 353 Nm of instant torque.

Water-cooling manages the battery temperature allowing frequent rapid charging and improved range, with 163 miles (or 262 km) from a single charge on the WLTP combined cycle. (Using WLTP’s city cycle the range is certified at 231 miles / 372 km).

Car and lithium-ion battery covered by MG’s 7 year warranty.
