Mitsubishi's new compact SUV.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) is to debut the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross compact SUV to the world at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a globally strategic model that will be shipped first to Europe in the fall of 2017, and then rolled out in Japan, North America, Australia and other regions.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross all-new compact SUV coupe will join MMC's global lineup of crossover SUVs: the ASX compact SUV and the Outlander and Outlander PHEV mid-size SUVs.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a fusion of sharp coupe looks and dynamic SUV mobility with signature Mitsubishi styling and performance.

Other distinguishing features are its design that motivates the driver to get out and go, connectivity that inspires new fun adventures, and all-wheel control technology which delivers an enjoyable, reassuring feel that elevates the driving experience.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers two powertrains that do full justice to a stylish SUV coupe in delivering the right balance of power and environmental performance. The new 1.5L direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine is mated to a new CVT with 8-speed Sport Mode manual override. The 2.2L common rail direct-injection turbocharged diesel engine modified specifically for Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Both powertrain combinations offer the driver brisk driving experience.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross officially revealed

Mitsubishi recently teased this new small SUV, which revives the Eclipse badge that was previously used on the Japanese manufacturer’s sportscar. And now it has been officially revealed.

Called the Eclipse Cross, the newcomer will slot in above the ASX and below the Outlander.

As far as appearances are concerned, the Eclipse Cross adopts the dynamic shield design seen on some of Mitsubishi’s most recent products. With this you get a smattering of chrome-effect trim on the front, while a distinctive LED taillamp design features round back.

When you step inside the Eclipse Cross, a silver theme immediately catches the eye, especially along parts of the facia. The cabin also boasts a new infotainment system and a head-up display.

Powering the Eclipse Cross will be a turbocharged 1,5-litre petrol engine with an eight-step continuously variable transmission or a 2,2-litre turbodiesel mill connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The SUV will come fitted with all-wheel drive as standard.

The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be on display in Geneva and is expected to arrive in showrooms across the globe in 2018.

Back end is a bit strange with that lighting setup and the spoiler on the top...

At first glance I was thinking "WTF are there 2 spoilers".

New Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV revealed

Nissan Qashqai-rivaling SUV will sit above the ASX and Outlander in Mitsubishi's range; on sale in early 2018

The all-new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been revealed ahead of its UK launch in early 2018.

The all-wheel drive SUV has coupé-like styling inspired by the XR-PHEV concept of 2015 and will sit above the ASX and Outlander models in Mitsubishi’s line-up.

This means the Eclipse Cross will rival cars such as the Nissan Qashqai and Seat Ateca.

Although the plug-in hybrid Outlander PHEV has been a success, Mitsubishi has been left behind in the SUV boom with cars such as the Qashqai far outselling its offerings.

Mitsubishi now has a new boss in Carlos Ghosn after he left Nissan to take the helm, so a wave of new models is expected, but in the short-term, the Eclipse Cross will do much to boost sales in a growing market before the Japanese manufacturer's future plans are revealed.

It will have the option of two engines: a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol with a new CVT transmission that is said to feature an eight-speed Sport Mode manual override, and a 2.2-litre diesel, which is said to be specifically modified for the Eclipse Cross and comes with a new eight-speed automatic transmission

Aesthetically, the Eclipse Cross gets the same Dynamic Shield front-end design as the ASX and Outlander, plus a new red exterior paint colour.

Inside, the Eclipse Cross gets a tablet-like infotainment system with a Smartphone Link Display Audio system that supports the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring apps. It also gets a touchpad controller and head-up display. Meanwhile, the rear seats split-fold 60/40.

Pricing and UK specifications will be announced closer to the car's 2018 release date, but its entry-level price is expected to be higher than the Outlander, which costs from £24,984.

Future plans for the company include a replacement for the Outlander and Outlander PHEV, which is expected in 2020, while a more direct Juke rival, smaller than the ASX, is tipped for a 2019 launch.

It's not clear when the ageing Mitsubishi Shogun will be replaced, although reports suggest an equally rugged new model has long been under development.

Mitsubishi has officially revealed its Eclipse Cross, a mid-size SUV set to take on the likes of Nissan's Qashqai and the Hyundai Tucson.

Mitsubishi has taken the covers off of its brand new Crossover/SUV. The Eclipse Cross will make its debut at the Geneva motor show before going on sale in 2018 across Europe. South Africa is also under consideration.

Interior shots of the Eclipse Cross show a tablet-like infotainment system is said to have with a centre mounted control unit (a bit like a Lexus). A head-up display is also included in the tech listing. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both available.

There's a new engine, fresh out of the factory in the form of a 1.5-litre turbopetrol. It is fitted with a new 8-speed CVT with a manual override option. A 2.2-litre turbodiesel will also be offered but connected to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

An electronic all-wheel-drive system allows torque to be sent to the rear wheels when needed, otherwise the Eclipse Cross retains a front-wheel-drive setup.

Mitsubishi reveals distinctive new crossover

It’s with good reason that Mitsubishi’s latest crossover, the Eclipse Cross, takes the first part of its name from an older-generation two-door coupé that the Japanese carmaker once sold.

The newcomer is clearly aimed at the sporty corner of its segment, where it’ll compete with vehicles like the Nissan Qashqai.

Slotting above the ASX, the Eclipse Cross has a distinctive, wedge-like design inspired by some of Mitsubishi’s recent concept cars.

It’s also got turbo power, offering a choice between a brand new 1.5-litre direct injection turbopetrol engine and a 2.2-litre turbodiesel. The former is mated to an eight-step CVT transmission, while the oil burner gets a conventional eight-speed autobox. No power or performance figures have been released as yet.

Power goes to all four wheels through Mitsubishi’s electronically-controlled permanent all-wheel drive system, with cornering aided by the firm’s Super All-Wheel Control dynamics control system.

Inside it offers head-up display and the latest in phone-pairing through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The car’s large central screen is operated through a touch pad positioned on the centre console.

We’re currently awaiting word on whether the new crossover is destined for South Africa.

Why can't we get the original 2 door eclipse, so much nicer than the mx5

Dumb!
Why waste a icon name like Eclipse on a school trip mommy van?

Not what I was expecting when I opened the thread.

Should I buy one?

On first impressions the Eclipse Cross is a solid all-rounder, one that feels impressively well screwed together and which, we’re promised, will come with generous standard kit from the entry-level version upwards. Mitsubishi reckons that it will carve out its own niche between the ASX and the Outlander, and although pricing isn’t finalised the indication is that a spread of around £21,000 to £29,000 is likely to cover the range.

The car's practical, sensible and even modestly stylish, and while UK spec isn’t finalised, we should see plenty of big car features on plusher versions – from radar cruise control to a 360-degree birds’ eye camera system. Still, I suspect this is one of those cars that will be bought with head rather than heart.
