2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross confirmed for South Africa!

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has confirmed that the new Eclipse Cross will be headed to our shores in 2018.

Unveiled earlier this year at Geneva, the new model will slot in between the ASX and the Outlander.

Although local specifications have yet to be revealed, the Eclipse Cross will be offered in Europe with the choice of two powertrains.

The first is a new 1,5-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (with eight virtual cogs), while the second is the familiar 2,2-litre turbodiesel unit fitted with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to the Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi Motors SA says it plans to launch “a host of new and improved models” in the coming months, with the highlight being the new Pajero Sport.

New Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV costs from £21,275

Nissan Qashqai-rivalling SUV will sit between the ASX and Outlander in Mitsubishi's range and goes on sale in January 2018 for a higher price than some competitors

Pricing for the all-new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been revealed ahead of its UK sales launch in January 2018. The rival to Nissan Qashqai will be priced from £21,275.

The all-wheel-drive SUV has coupé-like styling inspired by the XR-PHEV concept of 2015 and will sit between the ASX and Outlander models in Mitsubishi’s line-up.

This means the Eclipse Cross will go up against cars such as the Skoda Karoq and Seat Ateca. The car's starting price places it £1980 above the Qashqai, £400 above the Karoq and £2935 above the Ateca.

The Eclipse Cross range is split into three trim levels: 2, 3 and 4, with a reversing camera, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, heated door mirrors and 16in alloys standard from the ground up.

3 trim starts £1300 higher than the entry-level 2, while 4 is £2400 above this. Four-wheel drive is only available on automatic-equipped cars and commands a £1500 premium on 3 spec, on top of the £1275 for the automatic 'box. Cars equipped with four-wheel drive get three traction control settings, with Auto, Snow and Gravel modes available.

A First Edition, limited to 250 cars, initially tops the range, at £26,825, rising to £29,750 with four-wheel drive and an auto gearbox.

Although the plug-in hybrid Outlander PHEV has been a success, Mitsubishi has been left behind in the SUV boom, with cars such as the Qashqai far outselling its offerings.

Mitsubishi plans to launch 11 new models by 2020

Mitsubishi plans to launch 11 new models by 2020, including the Eclipse Cross, which is headed to SA in 2018.

Mitsubishi Motors, now firmly a part of an alliance with Renault and Nissan, has revealed its three-year strategic plan, confirming that it will launch 11 new models by 2020.

In a statement, the Japanese automaker revealed that six of the 11 new vehicles would be “entirely new model changes”, while the remainder would be “important updates” of existing vehicles.

By the end of the plan, the firm says it expects its five best-selling global models – comprising SUV, four-wheel-drive and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles – to account for 70% of its total sales volume. The company furthermore announced that it planned to provide “electrified solutions” across its core model range.

The plan – which the brand says combines the product renewal programme with “targeted market expansion and operating efficiency improvements” – targets an increase of more than 30% in both annual unit sales to 1,3 million vehicles and in revenues to 2,5 trillion yen.

The scheme involves a 60% increase in annual capital expenditure to 137 billion yen in fiscal 2019, with research and development expenses rising by 50% to 133 billion yen over the same period.

As part of its investment drive, Mitsubishi says it will “strengthen its four-wheel-drive SUVs and pick-ups”, while launching the 11 new models, which will include the Xpander MPV and SA-bound Eclipse Cross.

'Drive your ambition' - Mitsubishi debuts e-Evolution concept

Mitsubishi’s new e-evolution concept launched at the Tokyo Motor Show is an all-electric high-performance SUV that embodies the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation’s new brand strategy under the “Drive your Ambition” brand strategy.

Technical prototype illustrates strategic direction of renewed MMC brand Embodies MMC’s new “Drive your Ambition” brand strategy for inspirational design and product.

The Mitsubishi e-evolution concept is a technical prototype illustrating the strategic direction- of a renewed MMC brand that reflects an adventurous and progressive mindset. The new concept incorporates the strengths of SUV, EV and the ability to integrate new systems for a connected mobility customer experience.

Under this new ethos, MMC will accelerate product renewal and launch more new models – including South Africa where the Eclipse Cross compact crossover will make its local debut some time next year.

“Through technological advancements showcased in the e-evolution concept car, Mitsubishi will not only expand its world-wide customer base, but also its loyal following in South Africa,” says Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).

“Robust & Ingenious”: The design philosophy of Mitsubishi Motors

With the launch of the e-evolution concept, Mitsubishi illustrated its new design philosophy under the title “Robust & Ingenious”.

“We aim to provide vehicles that fulfill our customers’ desires through outstanding design, combined with the power, authenticity and carefully-considered functionality Mitsubishi Motors is known for,” said MMC head of global design, Tsunehiro Kunimoto.

Robust & ingenious, the design language of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is a study in contrasts. MMC vehicles of the future are meant to be sincere, tough, and functional. At the same time, they will be clever, resourceful, style-setting and technologically advanced.

Design

MMC has a long and strong heritage. Think of “Mitsubishi Motors,” the legendary Mitsubishi Pajero, a hallmark of off-road driving and the original multiple DAKAR champion, comes to mind. Now, the banner of superior, high-performance 4WD control is carried forward by the MITSUBISHI e-evolution concept. The design expresses the readiness to grip the ground with all four wheels, and the agility of a high performance cross-country tourer.

The front face design of the concept is a fresh take on MMC’s archetypal dynamic shield design. The black grille is shielded under glass, a subtle hint that this car is a high performance electric vehicle. Cameras and sensors are protected under the glass and accentuated by blue lines for emphasis. Large air intakes beneath the headlamps cool the electric brake calipers.

A sharply slanted front windshield and short overhangs give the car a unique side profile that has not been possible before the arrival of electric propulsion. High ground clearance, short overhangs, strong shoulders and narrow hips project nimbleness and agility. Muscular tires that protrude at the four corners communicate powerful 4WD torque.

It's powered by three torqueful electric motors, and the absence of a big internal combustion engine under the hood gave designers space for a radically novel cockpit. Its instrument panel appears to float in front of the driver. Acting like a level in an electronic viewfinder, the instrument panel makes it easier to sense the state of the vehicle during driving.

Tech

EV system: It uses three high-performance electric motors, fed by a high-capacity battery system to deliver the smooth and powerfully responsive performance that distinguishes EVs from fossil fuel powered vehicles. The drive battery is located under the floor in the middle of the vehicle for a low center of gravity and utmost stability.

4WD system: The triple motor 4WD system employs a single motor to drive the front wheels, complemented by a new Dual Motor Active Yaw Control (AYC) system that couples the two rear motors. This is integrated into MMC’s unique Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamic control system. Whether driving around town, on the highway or along winding roads, the concept provides crisp and nimble handling that faithfully mirrors driver intent.

AI system: The brain of the car is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that augments the driver’s capabilities. An array of sensors allows the AI system to instantly read changes in road and traffic conditions, as well as the driver’s intent. Seamlessly coordinating driver intent with vehicle performance, the system supports drivers of all abilities, bringing the motoring experience to a new level.

I'm Going To Give The 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross A Chance

Yes, it’s exactly what you think: Mitsubishi took the name of a sporty little car that was once great and stuck it on a new crossover to join all the other lumpy crossovers currently saturating our market: the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. And while I could easily slip into a blind rage over the whole ordeal, I won’t. I’m going to wait to drive it. I want to give the thing a chance.

The new Eclipse Cross, which debuted at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show earlier this week, is actually quite cheap with its $23,295 starting price. That alone should grab your attention, since cars in general are getting more and more expensive.

It comes standard with a 1.5-liter direct-injected turbocharged engine that makes 152 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. There’s all-wheel drive and a bunch of safety features like blind spot warning, lane change assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and a multi-vide camera system.

In person, it was fine. Inoffensive. It looked like a crossover. The red paint was nice. The back kind of looked like... something else.

Inside the car was where I had some concerns. The display vehicle had leather seats, but the inside was covered in a vast amount of shiny “piano black” plastic, already smudgy with fingerprints. The mousepad-styled infotainment navigator looked glued onto the console as an afterthought. Not great, and probably won’t age very well.

But! I’m still curious about how the Eclipse Cross drives. I found the seats pretty comfortable for the short time that I sat in them. Perhaps the engine, despite its low-sounding power figures, is actually super fun and peppy when you actually get out to use it.

And I suppose part of me is a little worried about Mitsubishi’s presence in the United States. After the company axed the Lancer here with no real successor to follow, the company’s only real fun car standing went with it. Mitsubishi does fine for itself in Central/South America and Asia because its lineups are much richer there. Perhaps the Eclipse Cross is an attempt at expanding the sad American portfolio. I support this.

In my mind, it’s only when a car company makes enough money selling the pedestrian stuff that it can start focusing on the enthusiast stuff. I drove a silly Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Final Edition last year and I still think about that goddamn car. It was one of the best I’d ever driven.

If the Eclipse Cross is the first step to bringing something like that back to us, then I’m open to its existence.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 4WD 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

Ultimately there’s little to dissuade you from at the very least trying an Eclipse Cross if you're looking for a mid-size crossover. It’s liberally equipped – including an array of safety technology – and more cultured than you’d credit for a manufacturer better known for its L200 pickup truck. Underwhelming fuel economy and truncated boot space (thank the sleek silhouette) are the caveats, however, so frequent long journeys with passengers and luggage would better suit more capacious diesel rivals.
