Toyota promises snappier CVT in new Auris hatch…

Toyota’s chief engineer for the new Auris hatchback promises that the Japanese brand’s freshly developed continuously variable transmission (complete with a “launch gear”) will be far better to use than the current version.

Speaking to motoring.com.au, Tatsuro Ueda said that the updated transmission – which the automaker calls “Direct Shift CVT” – was both more exciting to use and more efficient, with shifting speeds some 20 percent faster than before.

“Instead of the first gear ratio with a CVT, we use a direct gear drivetrain as a first gear. After that, from the first gear shift to the second gear shift, the ratio changes from direct gear shift to CVT,” Tatsuro-san told the Australian publication.

In an earlier press release, Toyota said that this addition of a launch gear would facilitate “improved transmission efficiency in lower gear ratios where belt efficiency is poor”.

“The transmission system utilises gear drive when starting from a full stop, resulting in powerful acceleration while at the same time resolving the momentary sluggish feeling that was previously present during accelerator operation,” the press material reads.

“Both smooth and comfortable launch performance are realised. When switching from gear drive to belt drive, the transmission system uses highly responsive gear change control technologies cultivated from AT technology,” it adds.

In the Auris, the CVT will be mated to a new naturally aspirated, 2,0-litre engine worth 126 kW at 6 600 r/min and 205 N.m at 4 800 r/min. In a hybrid powertrain configuration, these petrol figures come in at 107 kW and 180 N.m.

Toyota Corolla Hatchback

For the first time in North America, Toyota's newest, stylish, and most technologically-advanced small car, the all-new 2019 Corolla Hatchback, makes its debut at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Don't let its diminutive dimensions fool you - the hatchback, in either SE or XSE grades, is all about making a huge impression. With its lengthy list of standard features that includes Entune 3.0 with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa Connectivity; a revised sport-tuned suspension and new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform; and the first North American application of Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, Corolla Hatchback strikes a resounding chord with drivers who value authenticity, utility, practicality, and style.

Indomitable Style

Toyota Corolla Hatchback has flair extraordinaire. With a theme of Shooting Robust, along with a design goal of Agile, influencing their every pen stroke, designers created a form that is simultaneously distinct, dynamic, muscular, and sophisticated. Shooting references the design's sport coupe traits implemented in all facets.

With those concepts in mind, Toyota Corolla Hatchback is a meticulously mixed cocktail of emotive lines, creases, and surfaces. It's lower (by 1.0 in.), wider (by 1.2 in.), and longer (by 1.5 in.) than its predecessor, Corolla iM. It also has wider front and rear tracks, and a longer wheelbase.

Its hood sits two inches lower than before, affording passengers excellent forward visibility. The new frontal styling with a rounded nose and trapezoidal-shaped under grille is a further evolution of Toyota's Under Priority Catamaran and Keen Look design philosophies, both of which emphasize Corolla Hatchback's increased width.

Slim, J-shaped Bi-Beam LED headlamps wrap deep into the front fenders and accent the front in both stylishness and precise illumination. Front overhang has been cut by 0.8 inches; at the rear, it's 0.8 inches longer. Chiseled character lines at its profile link both ends' protruding flanks making for an active, well-planted expression that is uncommon amongst its peers. Wheel sizes range from 16-inches to 18-inches in diameter.

Its new rear style articulates Toyota Corolla Hatchback's overarching emphasis on athletic presence. The relationship between front and rear design is closely aligned given the rear's more rounded physique that encompasses simple, condensed, yet powerful, three-dimensional landscapes. Its hatch - now made from TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) - is not only lightweight to aid fuel efficiency, it is set at a steeper angle (moved 14 degrees forward) for that ultimate sporty look. The rear all-LED taillamps feature a diffusing inner lens designed to highlight the hatchback's stout stance. And the rear bumper styling echoes the frontal Under Priority Catamaran design with its thin lower lip and chrome diffuser.

Differentiation between SE and XSE is distinct. Both grades receive LED headlamps and taillights, chrome rear diffuser, and alloy wheels. XSE ups the ante with 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, chrome front grille surround, and an available innovative Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). AFS - available only on XSE CVT - allows for the focused distribution of light in an area that matches the vehicle's speed and steering angle. The Bi-Beam LED units move vertically and horizontally to provide optimal light output by analyzing steering angle, vehicle speed, and the vehicle's longitudinal axes angle to adjust lamps.

Corolla Hatchback's color range includes the new-for-2019 color Rival Blue, as well as Blizzard Pearl, Silver Metallic, Midnight Black, Galactic Aqua Mica, Scarlet, and Oxide Bronze.

Inner Emotiveness

Simple. Warm. Inviting. Sensuous. Descriptors like these inspired designers' efforts when visualizing Corolla Hatchback's cabin. Sensuous Minimalism marinates the entire capacious space. From their supportive sport seats, front passengers are faced with a neat instrument panel that lends an open, harmonious feeling thanks to its 0.9-inch thinner upper surface and 1.7-inch wider center console dividing passengers.

At the center of the instrument panel resides a standard high-resolution 8-inch multimedia touchscreen. The center stack screen provides access to vehicle settings, audio controls, navigation, smartphone, and Entune 3.0 apps. Climate controls, located below the multimedia portal, are fashioned in a bright, highly visible digitized configuration.

In addition to being wider, the center console is also longer to accommodate a larger variety of passenger physiques and comfort preferences. It incorporates a center tray ahead of the gearshift that can hold small items such as a smartphone or wallet, or if outfitted, serves as the Qi wireless device charging area. A 5.5-inch smartphone can easily fit inside the center console box.

High-gloss materials are paired with matte elements - silver accents with Piano Black and available contrasting stitching - to best accentuate a premium look and feel. The elimination of unnecessary lettering on switchgear, plus, the unification of all materials' and elements' shape, color, grain, and gloss, maximize continuity and aesthetic cleanliness. Tactility, too, is minded with the utmost consideration. Keen eyes will appreciate the minimized gaps between buttons and switches; again, furthering Toyota Corolla Hatchback's sophisticated character.

So Toyota is going to use that 1.2 turbo on almost everything they produce from now on, I heard it's going into the new RAV 4.

Am I the only one who prefer the old RunX, and think that this whole Auris bit, is a huge step backwards? It is ugly af:sick:

Toyota reveals first images of (US-spec) Auris interior

Toyota has revealed its new US-spec Corolla hatchback, mirroring the design of the new Auris.

When Toyota revealed its new, third-generation Auris at the Geneva International Motor Show early in March, it failed to release images of the boldly styled newcomer’s cabin (and blacked out the show car’s windows). Now, however, the Japanese brand has revealed the US-spec Corolla hatchback, complete with the first shots of the interior.

Set to be officially unveiled at the New York International Auto Show, the Corolla hatchback is essentially the US equivalent of the Euro-spec Auris. Just how closely the interior of the new Auris will resemble that of this US-spec model (which previously wore the Scion badge) remains to be seen, but we’re guessing much will be carried over.

At the centre of the instrument panel you’ll find a high-resolution eight-inch multimedia touchscreen standing proud. The centre stack screen provides access to vehicle settings, audio controls, navigation, smartphone and apps. Apple CarPlay is also included, along with Amazon Alexa integration.

The climate control buttons, meanwhile, are located below the multimedia portal. The centre console also now incorporates a tray ahead of the gearshift that can hold small items, or optionally serve as a wireless device charging area. The US-spec model features high-gloss materials paired with matte elements, along with a seven-inch TFT multi-information display.

Toyota shows us inside the all-new Auris

Toyota released the first pictures of its surprisingly daring new Auris hatchback earlier this month, but neglected to actually show us inside the new Golf rival, which is due to hit South African shores in the third quarter of this year.

Now it has been revealed for the second time, albeit in US-spec and badged as a Corolla hatchback (which the Auris has essentially always been in any case). Notwithstanding that there could be a few minor spec differences between this and the European Auris that we’re getting, the US reveal still gives us our first look at the cabin of the new hatch.

Unsurprisingly the new dashboard bears a strong resemblance to that in the CH-R crossover that this new Auris shares its TNGA ‘global’ platform with. The US-spec Corolla hatch comes standard with an Entune 20cm touchscreen infotainment system with Wi-Fi, Amazon Alexa integration and App Suite Connect.

As previously reported, it’s 40mm longer than before, with all of that extra length going into the wheelbase to procure more legroom, but it also aims for a sportier stance with a 30mm increase in width and a 25mm reduction in height.

Initially the Auris will only be available in South Africa with Toyota’s 1.2-litre turbopetrol engine, but a hybrid or two could follow at a later stage. It’s unlikely though that Euro or SA markets will receive the new 2-litre normally aspirated direct injection petrol motor announced for US versions, although that engine could certainly make its way into our next Corolla, and Rav4 for that matter.

On that note, the next-generation Corolla is likely to share its cabin with this car, while its exterior styling is almost certain to follow the same themes.

Expect a more involving drive and a more resolved ride quality, given that Toyota has installed a multi-link rear suspension system in the Auris for the first time.

But will there ever be a Gazoo performance version? No official word yet, but we’d certainly be disappointed if such a car never materialised.

Toyota hints at a hot Auris to tackle Golf GTI

What Toyota is currently missing in its stable is a GTI-rivalling hot hatch. With the all-new Auris on its way, it seems likely this gap could yet be filled – by 2020!

Speaking to Toyota Australia’s vice-president of sales and marketing, Sean Hanley, Motoring Australia uncovered there’s a strong chance that a Gazoo Racing Auris variant, built on the rigid TGNA platform, will happen.

“I’d like to see it as soon as possible,” Hanley grinned, “in the next three years I wouldn’t rule out the possibility or probability of something coming under the Gazoo Racing brand”.

The third-generation Toyota Auris will arrive in South Africa in the second half of this year.

I really like the new look, unfortunately Australia won't be getting the big 8" touch screen with apple carplay and Android auto until 2019 or something. I wonder what SA will get.
