UK-built 2018 Toyota Auris makes first appearance at Geneva Motor Show

The redesigned Toyota Auris will come with a choice of hybrid power and one petrol engine, but no diesel option

New Toyota Auris rivals cars like the Ford Focus
Gets new look and new underpinnings
Won’t come with a diesel option

Toyota has shown its all-new Auris at the Geneva Motor Show, with the family hatchback due to be offered with a choice of hybrid engines when it goes on sale later this year.

The third generation of Auris will have three engines options in all. A 120 horsepower 1.8-litre hybrid and a 177 horsepower 2.0-litre hybrid will sit alongside a solitary 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol.

The lower-powered hybrid is the same as that in the Prius – and, indeed, the current Auris – but the higher powered version aims to add a little more in the way of an ‘energised drive’, according to Toyota. The increase in power, the steering wheel mounted gear-shift paddles and the car’s new mechanical underpinnings should combine to make for a more engaging car to drive than the outgoing version.

The styling has been given a revamp, too, although it remains a much more conservative car than the likes of the latest Prius and Toyota’s C-HR SUV. The Auris gets all-new headlights, a large trapezoidal lower grille and is wider overall. The back of the car gets a more raked rear screen, while a spoiler is fitted as standard to every car. You can even opt for a two-tone paint job, with a black finish on the roof and rear pillars.

Toyota has confirmed that the new Auris will be built at the firm’s plant in Burnaston in Derbyshire, while the engines will be made in Deeside. It will go on sale later in 2018.

Beautiful, but I must be honest, I see some design cues taken from the Renault Megane.

I am thinking the same. It looks good, approved.
I also like how they've shortened the car, almost like the old Auris.

Toyota Auris

Toyota has always prided itself on listening to its customers and responding to the feedback they provide. In particular - after 20 years of hybrid leadership and more than 11 million global sales, including over 1.5 million units in Europe - the company is interested to learn from them as to how it can keep improving its hybrids and make them more attractive to new types of customers.

For this reason, Toyota has decided to offer its core models with a choice of two hybrid powertrains; one providing the traditional benefits of fuel efficiency and a relaxing drive, the second building on these strengths with greater power and more dynamic driving characteristics.

In 2010, the first generation Toyota Auris was the first high volume, core Toyota model in Europe to benefit from hybrid drive, and now it will be the first model to offer this choice of hybrid powertrains.

The current Auris powertrain line-up consists of five conventional engines and one hybrid powertrain. However, reflecting the brand's continued focus towards hybrid technology, the new Toyota Auris will offer customers just one conventional engine -a 1.2 litre turbo petrol unit- and a choice of 122 hp, 1.8 litre or 180 hp, 2.0 litre hybrid powertrains.

The 1.8 litre system fulfils all the requirements that customers have come to expect from a Toyota full hybrid powertrain -silent, intuitive, responsive and self-sufficient EV technology with low cost of ownership, no need for plug-in recharging, offering outstanding fuel economy and low CO2 emissions, and up to 50% all-electric driving on the everyday commute.

Whilst continuing to reward customers with all of the above benefits, the 2.0 litre system takes full advantage of the added ride comfort, stability, handling and driving enjoyment inherent in the newly adopted Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. It will offer drivers an 'energised drive', with more power and steering wheel-mounted paddles for a more dynamic, engaging driving experience.

TOYOTA NEW GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE (TNGA)

Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) represents the foundation for all of Toyota's future powertrain and vehicle development. It marks a revolution in the way the company designs, engineers and manufactures vehicles, and is integral to the company's mission to build ever better cars that are more stylish, more enjoyable to drive and even safer.

TNGA introduces new, defined guidelines for the positioning of different state-of-the-art components which simplify vehicle design in key areas. The impact is on items that are largely out of sight, so designers still had the freedom to give the new Auris a visually distinctive and individual look with a lower stance and more appealing proportions.

The new Toyota Auris' TNGA platform guarantees a more rewarding driving experience thanks to a centre of gravity, multi-link rear suspension, and a more rigid body shell through the use of high strength steel as reinforcement in key areas. All contribute to better handling and stability without compromising ride and comfort.

All new TNGA-based vehicles prioritise the highest active and passive safety standards. New Auris is designed to meet the exacting standards of independent crash testing programmes and provide increased safety levels through the sophisticated functions and systems of the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology.

DESIGN

'Our primary goal with the new Auris was to create the most bold and dynamic hatchback on the market, without compromising on interior usability,' explains Simon Humphries, Executive General Manager, Toyota Global Design.

'Harnessing the low centre of gravity afforded by the TNGA layout, the vehicle is light and agile in the side view, yet as we move to the rear, the architecture transforms to create a solid, wide and low stance that is absolutely critical to the European market.'

Longer and lower than its predecessor, the new Toyota Auris adopts a significantly more dynamic design and more striking frontal styling.

Overall length has increased by 40 mm, all of which has been absorbed within a longer wheelbase. Importantly, the overall height of the new hatchback has been reduced by some 25 mm, whilst the cowl height of the vehicle is a significant 47 mm lower than that of the current model. The result is a sleeker shape and a more attractive, lower bonnet, which in turn improves safety by giving the driver a clearer forward view.

The new frontal styling is a further evolution of Toyota's Under Priority Catamaran and Keen Look design philosophies. Beneath the curved front edge of a flatter, clamshell bonnet, the narrow upper grille incorporates a central Toyota logo and, at its extremities, new, all-LED headlamp clusters with integral Daytime Running Lights (DRL).

The surround to the large, trapezoidal lower grille projects powerfully forward of the bonnet front edge and upper grille in a pronounced step, and is less pointed and more vertical than before, resulting in a reduction to the vehicle's front overhang of some 20 mm.

The sides of the grille surround form a trademark, catamaran hull shape at the front corners of the new Auris, emphasising the vehicle's 30 mm increase in width, and its broad, sporting stance.

Beneath the grille, the surround splits to clearly define the lip of a front spoiler, the edges of which are angled upwards to create a zone between the spoiler and the catamaran hull form, in which are housed LED foglamps. The grille mesh itself is of a new design, which is more articulate and refined than the classic honeycomb finish.

The new rear design is more rounded than before in plan form, strengthening the visual relationship between the front and rear of the vehicle. An increase in rear windscreen rake of some 14 degrees and the muscular hip adopted above the rear wheel arch combine to make the overall appearance of the vehicle rear more compact, despite an increase in rear overhang of 20 mm. A roof spoiler is fitted, as standard, on all model grades.

The rear all-LED lamp clusters feature light guides designed to emphasise the new Auris' wide, planted rear stance. And the rear bumper styling echoes the frontal Under Priority Catamaran design; a thin lower lip here incorporating twin chrome inserts.

The new Toyota Auris' dynamic design is further emphasised through an optional bi-tone colour scheme, which combines the body colour with a black finish to the roof and all glazing pillars.

No way it'll look like that especially for the SA market.

We'll end up with an India-built version with 13" wheelcaps...

Meet the all-new, third-generation Toyota Auris…

Toyota has revealed its new, third-generation Auris at the Geneva International Motor Show, confirming the launch of a new 2,0-litre full hybrid powertrain and the complete removal of diesel engines from the hatchback’s line-up.

Diesel engines, of course, are not offered in the outgoing Auris range here in South Africa. Interestingly (although not yet confirmed for local models), Toyota in Europe says the new Auris will be offered with just a single conventional engine (in the form of the 1,2-litre turbopetrol that debuted in the C-HR) plus a choice 2,0-litre hybrid powertrains in various states of tune.

Overall length of the new Auris compared with the outgoing model has increased by 40 mm, all of which has also been added to the wheelbase. The height of the hatchback, meanwhile, has been reduced by 25 mm (and width increased by 30 mm), while the front overhang has been cut by 20 mm.

Running on the Japanese brand’s latest TNGA platform, Toyota promises its new Auris will offer driver an “energised drive, with more power and steering wheel-mounted paddles for a more dynamic, engaging driving experience”.

“Our primary goal with the new Auris was to create the most bold and dynamic hatchback on the market, without compromising on interior usability,” said Simon Humphries, executive general manager at Toyota Global Design.

“Harnessing the low centre of gravity afforded by the TNGA layout, the vehicle is light and agile in the side view, yet as we move to the rear, the architecture transforms to create a solid, wide and low stance that is absolutely critical to the European market,” he added.

Beautiful, but I must be honest, I see some design cues taken from the Renault Megane.
I'm taking back what I said earlier, I'll downgrade it to decent, just saw video that shows the car from all sides and some how Toyota has managed to bulge every piece of metal on that car.

Toyota reveals all-new, SA-bound Auris hatch

Toyota’s Auris is back for a third attempt at cracking the Golf class, this time with a somewhat more striking design and a drivetrain strategy that goes big on hybrids.

Due to reach South Africa in the third quarter of this year, the all-new Auris joins the C-HR and Prius on Toyota’s new TNGA global platform.

It’s 40mm longer than before, with all of that extra length going into the wheelbase to procure more legroom, but it also aims for a sportier stance with a 30mm increase in width and a 25mm reduction in height.

The new Auris ushers in a new powertrain strategy in which hybrid powertrains take centre stage. In fact, the only conventional engine is the 1.2-litre turbopetrol, which is joined by a 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid with a system output of 90kW as well as Toyota’s completely new and more potent 2-litre hybrid drivetrain, with a system output of 132kW.

The South African line-up will kick off with the 1.2 turbo as the only option, but the range will offer hybrid options at a later stage.

Toyota has also paid more attention to driving dynamics this time around, not only through its lower centre of gravity, but also via increased rigidity and the use of a multi-link rear suspension system.

The exterior design, too, is unashamedly aimed at the European market, for which Toyota has created a more youthful look but without going too over the top. Catamaran hull shaped creases at the corners of the front and rear bumpers add a distinctive touch, while the two-tone roof keeps it abreast with Euro styling trends.

Toyota has yet to release pictures of the cabin, or any information pertaining to it, but it is likely to inherit a ‘floating screen’ cabin design - along with the latest infotainment systems - from the C-HR.

'Dieselgate' gave Toyota a surprise advantage
Daniel Aronssohn

Toyota's all-new Auris hatch line-up, revealed at the Geneva show this week, doesn't include a single diesel derivative.

A motor industry turning away from diesel and European drivers increasingly favouring hybrid cars: add it up and the result is clear - advantage Toyota.

The Japanese company is the world's third largest car manufacturer but it has always struggled to match that impact in Europe.

But the "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal that blew up at Volkswagen in 2015, heavily discrediting diesel technology, has created a new opening for Toyota, which was the first carmaker to market hybrid engines two decades ago.

"If there is one manufacturer that has taken advantage of 'dieselgate' it is Toyota," said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Germany-based Centre for Automotive Research.

Experts have noted that while major European manufacturers spent years betting the house on diesel as their environmentally friendly alternative, Toyota was making itself the industry leader in hybrids, which are powered by a combination of petrol and electric motors.

Other manufacturers, notably Suzuki and Kia, have long-standing commitments to hybrid, but "Toyota was the first and focused all its efforts on developing and positioning the technology as a good alternative" to diesel, said Felipe Munoz, an expert at London-based auto industry analysts Jato Dynamics.

Diesel in decline

Toyota's hybrid model sales in Europe jumped 45 percent last year.

"Since last summer, we have seen people in dealerships who we'd never seen before and who always drove diesel," said Toyota's spokesman in France, Sebastien Grellier.

Four out of every 10 Toyotas registered in Europe are hybrids, a number that rises to six out of 10 for France.

A particular success has been the compact SUV - the Toyota C-HR - introduced at the end of 2016. Toyota says that 90 percent of the vehicle's sales are hybrids.

Meanwhile, as awareness grows about diesel engines spewing out nitrogen oxide and harmful particulates, diesel sales in Europe are plummeting.

The market's future has been further imperilled by plans in major cities such as Paris to ban diesel, while pro-diesel legislation across the continent is rapidly being scrapped.

Last year, nearly 15 percent of Toyota's sales in Europe were from diesel vehicles, down from 30 percent in 2012.

On the eve of this week's Geneva Motor Show, Europe's first major car show of the year, Toyota said it will stop selling diesel cars in Europe, beginning the phase-out this year.

'Focus on hybrid'

"We will not develop new diesel technology for passenger cars, we'll continue to focus on hybrid" vehicles, said Johan van Zyl, president of Toyota Motor Europe.

Having that focus ahead of the competition may have given Toyota an edge, but experts warn that maintaining the advantage is far from assured.

Dudenhoeffer believes Toyota "is benefitting today because of its successes of the past", not because it remains a leader in innovation.

He highlighted the "48-volt light hybrid" engine that some experts say will grow in popularity by improving performance while still allowing makers to meet emissions standards.

Renault and Volkswagen are already using the new technology, but Toyota is not.

Longer term, experts believe the hybrid market will also continue to weaken, with 100-percent electric cars ultimately taking the lead over the next decade.

Toyota is trailing its main rivals Nissan and Renault in 100-percent electric cars but has vowed to catch up through sustained investments in the emerging technology.
