VW's sexy new Arteon stars in its first video
Volkswagen’s first promo video for the new premium five-door Arteon makes the most of its superbly proportioned profile- as well it should.
A little larger than the Passat CC it replaces - 95mm longer on a 50mm longer wheelbase and 39mm wider - its fastback shape is way more successful from every angle, including the practical view; it includes a 563 litre boot under a gaping fastback lid.
The video’s clever play of light also brings out the best in Volkswagen’s deeper, slightly more complex and very upright new front treatment; it will be very interesting to see how the designers translate that look into future generations of Golf, Polo and Tiguan.
Also featured in the video are the Arteon’s ‘virtual’ instrument cluster, and latest-generation 23.3cm infotainment touchscreen, as well as adaptive cruise control that reads speed limit signs and adjusts its settings accordingly, and predictive cornering lights.
As noted in our launch story from the Geneva motor show, European customers will have a choice of three turbopetrols - the new 110kW 1.5-litre TSI, and two-litre TSI’s in 140kW and 206kW tuning, the latter with all-wheel drive - and three two-litre turbodiesels, tuned for 110kW, 140kW and 176kW respectively, with all wheel drive on the top variant again.
The gold-coloured Arteon in the video features the optional ‘R-Line’ pack, the white one the ‘Elegance’ option.

VW SAYS NEW ARTEON WILL PULL OVER IF YOU BLACK OUT
Volkswagen says that its new Arteon will be fitted with more driver assistance systems than any VW before, revealing that the Passat-based fastback will even be capable of pulling over if its driver becomes incapacitated.
“Through the fusion of four driver assistance systems, the Arteon possesses a form of technology that in many circumstances can help to prevent serious accidents: Emergency Assist 2,0,” VW said.
As soon as the vehicle’s sensors notice that the driver has become incapacitated, the Arteon takes over “within its technical system limits”, warning other road-users and automatically steering to the nearside lane, where it stops.
The second-generation Emergency Assist merges adaptive cruise control, side assist, lane assist and park assist into one system.
If sensors recognise that for a defined length of time the driver has used neither the accelerator, brake nor steering wheel, the system initiates what VW calls “systematic countermeasures”.
First, the driver is warned by acoustic, visual and physical (read, “brake jolt”) signals. If they fail to react, Emergency Assist activates the emergency stop process, with the hazard warning lights being automatically activated. In addition, VW says the Arteon “performs gentle steering manoeuvres in order to make drivers in nearby vehicles aware of the dangerous situation”.
Although Volkswagen SA has yet to confirm that the new model will be launched in South Africa, a spokesperson told CARmag.co.za back in March that “the signs are positive that we will be getting Arteon in 2018”

Volkswagen considering Arteon Shooting Brake
A high-design estate derivative is on the cards for Volkswagen’s new flagship executive hatchback
Volkswagen will consider adding a pseudo-estate bodystyle to its new Arteon range if the car is as well received in European showrooms as it’s hoped, company sources have revealed.
The new Audi A5 Sportback-rivalling Arteon hatchback, which is expected in UK showrooms this October, will take Volkswagen into a part of the executive car market it hasn’t occupied since the Phaeton saloon was discontinued from UK sales in 2015.
It will launch with a choice of 276bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 237bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines, both of which will get 4Motion four-wheel drive and seven-speed DSG automatic gearboxes as standard. Volkswagen UK is yet to decide if any of the less powerful engine versions available elsewhere will be made available in the UK.
Pricing for the Arteon is expected to kick off at around £38,000.
Volkswagen Head of Product Line Elmar Licharz said: “It’s our intention to turn the Arteon into a model family. Right now, we have a proposal on the table for a stylish wagon version to compliment the hatchback. The car has not been confirmed for production yet, but it has a good chance.”

When the new Volkswagen Arteon was officially revealed in Geneva back in March, the German brand said that it would be available with a range of engines. All, however, would be four-cylinder mills, VW said.
But now a new report out of the United Kingdom indicates that the Wolfsburg automaker is considering adding a new six-cylinder engine to the range.
Elmar-Marius Licharz, VW’s chief product line for medium- and full-size cars, told AutoExpress that a six-pot might just be on the cards.
“If we build a six-cylinder engine – we are discussing it for the Arteon; we have built one already in a prototype vehicle – it will be one which you can also use in the Atlas and vice versa,” he said.
Licharz went on to reveal that he “would like to make an [Arteon] shooting brake”, adding that “these plans are underway but it’s not yet final”.
