Volkswagen is expanding its model range with the debut of an avant-garde gran turismo: the new Volkswagen Arteon. Positioned above the Passat, the premium class Arteon is being revealed to a global audience for the first time at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen Head of Design: "The Arteon combines the design elements of a classic sports car with the elegance and space of a fastback. An avant-garde business-class gran turismo, it speaks to the heart and the head alike."

Gran Turismo

Tobias Sühlmann, responsible for the VW Arteon's exterior design, explains: "The athletic lines of the Arteon embody a highly functional overall concept. Form and function find common ground here in a progressive way. In contrast to classic saloons, the gran turismo offers more space and flexibility thanks to its long wheelbase, coupé-like fastback design and large rear hatch."

The five-seat Arteon is an ideal avant-garde alternative - a car for people who want a five-door fastback with an accomplished, elegant design and progressive technology.

Perfect proportions

The new Volkswagen Arteon is based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB). Transverse stands here for engines that are transversely mounted in the front. This configuration naturally creates space. A long wheelbase of 2,841 mm spans the two axes. Accordingly, the body overhangs of the 4,862 mm long fastback model are short and concise. The Arteon is 1,871 mm wide and 1,427 mm tall. These dimensional relationships deliver truly dynamic proportions - a visual starting point for Volkswagen designers.

Any of the engines may be combined with an automated dual clutch gearbox (DSG) (except the 110 kW TSI in Germany which is only available with a manual gearbox). For the TSI engines, DSG is standard for the 140 kW engine and above. In the case of the TDI, DSG is fitted as standard in the 176 kW version. The most powerful TSI and TDI engines also have 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard, while this is available as an option for the 140-kW TDI. All other models have front-wheel drive.

The front looks a bit weird. Nice interior.
 
That's a very pretty motor vehicle...there's some Laguna in the styling somewhere particularly the profile.
 
It's as if the new Tiguan's design was applied to the CC. Love the car and the tech, but it still feels like an old mans car.

Farewell CC, hello Arteon. Volkswagen has finally officially revealed the new Arteon at the Geneva Motor Show, positioning the swoopy newcomer above the Passat and promising that it will come in at an “attractive price”.

VW says the five-door, five-seater Arteon combines the “design elements of a sports car with the elegance and space of a fastback”, describing it as an “avant-garde gran turismo”.

Running on the Wolfsburg automaker’s MQB platform, the VW Arteon features a wheelbase measuring 2 841 mm, with short overhangs of the 4 862 mm long fastback body. The Arteon – which will be built in Emden in Germany – is 1 871 mm wide and 1 427 mm tall.

LED headlights and daytime running lights are fitted as standard.

VW describes the Arteon’s rear legroom as “excellent”, adding that the luggage space measures from 563 to 1 557 litres.

Six engines (all four-cylinder mills) will be available, ranging in output from 110 kW to 206 kW. The first two power levels of the petrol and diesel engines are identical at 110 kW and 140 kW, while the most potent TSI delivers 206 kW and the most powerful TDI produces 176 kW. The base petrol engine comes in the form of the new 1,5 TSI Evo, while all other engines displace 2,0 litres.

Both front-wheel and all-wheel drive will be available, depending on the market, while dual-clutch transmissions will be on offer on all models.

Technical highlights in the cabin include the brand’s fully digital Active Info Display, a head-up display and the new Discover Pro infotainment system with its 9,2-inch glass screen and gesture control.

Volkswagen SA last year told us that the Arteon was “under consideration” for local introduction. And, yes, that’s an R-Line version you see in the accompanying images…

I just read about this on The Truth About Cars. The article was saying that it hopes that it doesn't suffer the fate of the Phaeton.
 
So VW names it after a survivor of a nuclear world war to make it survive?

Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off of its new luxury gran turismo (grand tourer). Meet the Volkswagen Arteon, which is positioned above the Passat and replaces the outgoing CC model.

The Volkswagen Arteon comes to market as a 5-door fastback, brimming with the latest technology and premium design. Built on the MQB platform that underpins a host of Audi and Volkswagen products, the Arteon features a long wheelbase and is fairly wide, which presupposes excellent interior space. At 4 862 mm long and 1 871 mm wide, the Arteon is sizeable. Boot space is claimed to sit at 563 litres and can be expanded to 1 557 litres.

Its front-end design is arguably the newcomer's biggest talking point. With a long bonnet, striking daytime running lights and LED headlights, there'll be no mistaking the Arteon for anything else. The flared wheel arches can accommodate wheels of up to 20-inch alloys.

The Volkswagen Arteon sits above the Passat and will be manufactured at Volkswagen's plant in Emden, Germany. The vehicle launches in mid-June in the German market and has been confirmed for the South African market introduction. There are 6 engines, front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations, plus digital displays and controls.
