Thread created in advance for the unveiling of the new coupe-design Q8 that takes place on the 5th June.

Official sketches give us a closer look at Audi's Q8

Audi’s first-ever Q8 is set to be revealed in a week from now (on June 5), giving Audi a genuine rival to the likes of BMW’s X6 and Merc’s GLE Coupe.

Whereas its rivals are essentially just ‘coupe-like’ iterations of the X5 and regular GLE, it appears as if the Audi will have a more distinct design that shares nothing with its more vanilla Q7 sibling.

With the release of a new teaser sketch on the company’s global Facebook page, we now have a good idea of how Audi’s new flagship SUV will appear from the front. Audi also released a rear sketch last week, showing us that the newcomer will sport a full-length tail light design as per the latest A8 sedan.

Beneath the distinctive design, the Q8 is expected to share much of its hardware with the Audi Q7, which is based on the VW Group’s MLB platform that also underpins the new VW Touareg, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Panamera and Lamborghini Urus.

Power is set to come from the latest range of V6 and V8 engines co-developed with Porsche, and the Q8 is also likely to come with some (if not all) of the autonomous driving features that debuted on the A8.

In addition to the teaser pics, Audi has launched a video teaser campaign on YouTube, with a series of short action films showing small snippets of the Q8 - although they don't actually show much of the car. Watch this space for the full reveal of the Q8 next Tuesday.

2018 Audi Q8: exterior revealed in preview video and sketches

Audi will take on the BMW X6 with a plush, high-tech five-seater that will top an eight-model SUV line-up; the first video in a series which will reveal the car has been released

Audi has issued the latest preview video of its upcoming Q8 in a series which will culminate in its reveal in the coming weeks. Snippets of the car's exterior and interior have been shown in the films.

A sketch was recently released confirming that the SUV will share styling cues with the A7 and A8, including a full width rear light bar. So far, only highlights and close-up details have been shown in the metal, although a previous preview showcased the car's sleek, tapering roofline - it'll be a rival to the BMW X6.

The car has been spotted on multiple occasions in recent months, providing an even clearer idea of how it'll look. Much of its design seems to have stayed true to that of the Q8 concept. It retains an SUV-coupé roofline, LED headlights and tail-lights, as well as a broad, eight-corner, single-frame grille.

Much of the Q8's mechanical package will be shared with the smaller Q7. The difference in size between the two models is best illustrated in pictures (see gallery) of them testing alongside one another. The Q8 appears nearly identical in width and length, but its more swept-back roofline makes it slightly lower.

Due to arrive with an entry-level price of around £55,000, the Q8 will sit alongside the A8 at the top of the firm's range and offer similar levels of luxury.

"I could imagine an executive being driven to work every day in their A8 and then spending the weekend driving themselves in their Q8," Audi boss Rupert Stadler previously told Autocar. "The Q8 will have global appeal in all of the major markets - Europe, China, the US, Russia and more, so we're very excited about it."

The Q8 is one of seven new SUV models currently under development at Audi and scheduled for launch before the end of the decade. It joins the Q2 and renewed Q3 and Q5, plus a new Q1 and Q4, as well as the electric E-tron, which has recently been previewed with the announcement of its technical specifications.

Audi's intensive focus on SUVs follows worldwide sales figures that revealed every third car sold by the brand hails from its line-up of 'Q' models.

The new flagship Q8 will come with an extended range of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains. At the entry level will be a 3.0-litre TDI. The bulk of the range is made up of new V6 and V8 petrol and diesels, while at the top of the range will be a new petrol-electric plug-in hybrid. The electrified powertrain is being developed in partnership with Porsche and is claimed to give the Q8 an electric-only driving range of up to 31 miles.

High-tech options

Among the new Audi’s arsenal of options will be many of the advanced systems developed for the latest A8, such as a 48V electric system, OLED high-definition digital displays and the very latest in autonomous driving functions.

Audi design boss Marc Lichte has championed the Q8's sportier design, having revealed plans for a more dramatic design as early as 2016. He told Autocar earlier this year that the Q8 would be a new example of Audi's departure from 'Russian Doll' design, although it is still instantly recognisable as an Audi.

As with the upcoming Q4 and Q6, the Q8 has a five-door layout, with four conventional front-hinged doors and a large liftback-style tailgate for access to its boot.

Although it features a more rakish rear than the Q7 that cuts into boots pace, Lichte believes the storage capacity of the Q8 will still eclipse rivals because the roof line drops dramatically around the C-pillar, meaning space is reduced only at the very end of the car.

The Q8 is said to be 5050mm long and 1970mm wide. By comparison, the Mercedes-Benz GLE is 4900mm long, 2000mm wide and 1700mm tall, while the Range Rover Sport has respective dimensions of 4850mm, 1985mm and 1780mm - and the sportier Range Rover Velar is even smaller than that.

Lightweight platform

As with the Q7, the Q8 is based on the latest version of Audi’s MLB platform, here with a 2990mm wheelbase.

Reflecting the Q8’s more sporting brief, Audi insiders said it is also in line to receive track widths that extend beyond the Q7’s, which are 1680mm at the front and 1690mm at the rear.

As with the Q7, the body structure of the Q8 is set to make extensive use of aluminium in a bid to push lower-end models below the 2000kg mark.

Further weight-saving measures include the selected used of carbonfibre in non-load-bearing structures, as seen on the R8 supercar.

The Q8's new V6 and V8 engines come from a joint venture between Audi and Porsche that carries the internal codename KoVoMo. They are also to be used by Bentley and Volkswagen.

The units are based around a shared 90deg architecture and will feature a common 500cc individual cylinder capacity, making for capacities of 3.0 and 4.0-litres. The new engines feature gas-driven turbochargers in the first stage of production.

Hybrid powertrains

Audi insiders have hinted that electric turbocharging, supported by the Q8’s 48V electrical system, may also be introduced at a later date.

The KoVoMo engine is claimed to be at the centre of a secret new plug-in petrol-electric hybrid system tipped for introduction on the Q8 and the third-generation Porsche Cayenne, which is due in showrooms this April.

It is likely to be one of two hybrid systems offered on the new Audi, joining the diesel-electric system already announced for the Q7.

Of greater importance to the UK market will be the diesel engine range. Included among the launch line-up will be at least two variants of Audi’s familiar 3.0-litre V6 unit.

A potent SQ8 model with the advanced triple-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 diesel recently revealed in the SQ7 is also expected.

Inside, the Q8 will receive a reworked version of the Q7’s high tec cockpit, featuring a more driver-oriented centre console. Unlike the seven-seat Q7, though, the Q8 will be available with a five-seat layout only.

As part of a comprehensive connectivity package, Audi is working on providing over-the-air updates for future incarnations of its MMI (Multi Media Interface) infotainment system.

These include real-time sat-nav updates via the Here system being developed in a joint venture with BMW and Mercedes-Benz's parent company, Daimler.

The Q8 is scheduled to be built at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia alongside the current Q7, new Porsche Cayenne and new Volkswagen Touareg, which was recently revealed.

Flagship Audi Q8 Teased

Audi will unveil its flagship Q8 SUV on 5 June 2018 and ahead of the big event, the Ingolstadt-based firm has teased the new Q8 on numerous occasions, but the latest design sketches give us a good idea of what to expect from the new Q8.

The design sketches shown here show the powerful design of the new Q8 SUV, featuring a thick single-frame grille with vertical slats which also featured on the Q8 Concept shown at the Detroit Motor Show in 2017.

The Q8’s imposing design is further emphasised with a creased bonnet, fancy full LED headlights and gaping air intakes. The new design language draws inspiration from the Ur-Quattro of the 1980’s.

A sleek and sporty design is what you can expect from the new Audi Q8.

At the rear, the Q8 wears slim tail lights with a continuous brake light and trapezoidal exhausts. A dash of rugged appeal is added with front and rear skid plates and flaring side skirts. The look is rounded off with dainty side mirrors and large wheels filling the arches.

The Audi Q8 shares its MLB Evo platform with other models such as the Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus. The Q8 will rival the likes of the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe.

The interior design has yet to be revealed but will likely share similarities with the A6, A7 and A8.

In terms of engines, a range of 4- and 6-cylinder engines are expected which may include a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with 186 kW and a V6 engine with 265 kW. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is also expected and the Q8 will also likely be offered in S and RS guise. The Q8 RS may even offer as much as 395 kW.

Official details will be revealed at the Audi China Brand Summit Shenzhen event that will take place in Shanghai on 5 June 2018. Stay tuned for more details.

The front just has too many different colours going on - looks hyper aggressive too. Overall not too bad, think they need to look at that colour scheme

Flagship Audi Q8 Leaked

Audi will unveil its flagship Q8 SUV today but images of the new model have leaked online showing what appears to be a rather sporty-looking newcomer...
Previously we only had design sketches to ogle over but images of the new Q8 have now surfaced online ahead of its official reveal today. The powerful design of the new Q8 SUV incorporates a thick single-frame grille with vertical chrome slats which also featured on the Q8 Concept shown at the Detroit Motor Show in 2017. The Q8’s imposing design is further emphasised with a creased bonnet, sleek full-LED headlights and gaping air intakes.

Viewed from the side, the Q8 features a sloping roofline, raked C-Pillar and frameless windows to enhance it's coupe-like appearance. The new design language draws inspiration from the Ur-Quattro of the 1980’s.

At the rear, the Q8 wears slim tail lights with a continuous brake light and trapezoidal dual exhausts. A dash of rugged appeal is added with front and rear skid plates and flaring side skirts. The look is rounded off with large wheels filling the arches.

On the inside, the driver is cocooned in leather with the interior design sharing similarities with the A6, A7 and A8. It's an all-digital affair inside the Q8 with Audi's Virtual Cockpit placed directly ahead of the driver. Furthermore, there are also 2 touchscreens found in the centre stack to take care of infotainment and in-car convenience feature settings.

In terms of engines, a range of petrol and diesel engines are expected which may include a 3.0-litre V6 engine with 250 kW as well as a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine with outputs of about 170 kW and 210 kW.

2018 Audi Q8 design leaked ahead of today's reveal

Audi will take on the BMW X6 with a plush, high-tech five-seater that will top an eight-model SUV line-up; the first video in a series which will reveal the car has been released

Styling of the Audi Q8 has leaked onto the internet ahead of the car's official unveiling later today in Shenzen, China.

The leak, from a Portugese news site, reveals the full styling of the car, inside and out. It adheres closely to the design set out in the Q8 concept last year, with a tapering roofline, rear light bar and large family face dominating the styling on each side.

Audi issued the latest preview video of its upcoming Q8 in a series which will culminate in its reveal at the Audi Brand Summit this afternoon. Snippets of the car's exterior and interior are shown in the films.

The car was spotted on multiple occasions in recent months, providing a clear early idea of how it'll look. An SQ8 will likely arrive next year, with styling similar to the Q8 Sport concept which followed the original Q8 concept.

Much of the Q8's mechanical package will be shared with the smaller Q7. Audi Q8

Prestige, presence and impeccable Audi quality in every detail: the all-new Q8 is ready to combine the best of both worlds by offering the elegance of a four-door luxury coupé and the convenient versatility of a large SUV. Remaining faithful to the dramatic styling of the original Q8 Sport concept first revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the series production car will join UK roads in summer 2018 featuring a generously dimensioned interior with a variable luggage compartment, state-of-the-art drive and suspension technologies and intelligent assistance systems that make it a convincing companion for business and leisure.

A strong yet efficient 3.0 TDI with a mild hybrid system provides the dynamics which are implied by the muscular exterior design. With the permanent quattro all-wheel drive and a ground clearance of up to 254 mm, the SUV coupé can continue when paved roads end.

At 4,986 mm long, 1,995 mm wide and 1,705 mm high, the new Audi Q8 exudes a presence on the road like no other SUV from the brand with the four rings. With its coupé-style roof line it appears much lower than its Q7 sister model. It is 66 mm shorter, but has become 27 mm wider. The distinctive front end, the short rear overhang and the mighty 21-inch wheels with a diameter of 795 mm paint a picture of powerful dynamics. In the UK, S line specification that is equipped with a host of standard features ranging from sport-configured adaptive air suspension and MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch to HD Matrix LED headlights, will be available from market launch. Soon after, an even more comprehensively specified Vorsprung version will join the line-up.

With a wheelbase of almost three metres, the Audi Q8 offers ample space for five people. The interior space exceeds that of the direct competitors in almost all relevant dimensions.

With its large luggage compartment and generously sized storage compartments and tray areas, the Q8 is ideal for longer journeys. The luggage compartment of the SUV holds 605 litres as a standard, which increases to 1,755 litres with the rear backrests folded down. Two golf bags can easily fit in diagonally. The tailgate can be opened and closed electrically as standard. The electric luggage compartment cover is another convenience option. Guided on rails, it automatically retracts when the tailgate is opened and is extended again upon closing.

A new face for the Q family: the exterior design

The Audi Q8 is a representative of the progressive design language that Audi first brought onto the road with the new A8. Strong contours and athletically tight surfaces convey a feeling of power, sophistication and the special dynamics of the permanent all-wheel drive. The Q8 interprets this in its very own way, as the fusion of an elegant four-door luxury coupé with a large SUV, and with echoes of an Audi icon - the original quattro.

With the imposing Singleframe in octagonal design, the Audi Q8 debuts the new face of the Q family. Six distinctive vertical chrome fins make the radiator grille appear upright and solid.

A wide mask connects the Singleframe to the distinctive headlights. The spoiler, which protrudes at the front, and the large, strongly contoured air intakes further highlight the aggressive look of the Q8.

Thanks to the frameless doors, the coupé-type roof line stretches low across the vehicle body visually, ending in the a long roof spoiler. The roof line arches slightly towards the flat sloping, strong D-pillars, which are supported by wide, muscular contours - the quattro blisters, reminiscent of the original Audi quattro. The shoulder line stretches the SUV, elegantly connecting the powerful wheel housings.

Compact proportions, paired with a very low roof and a flat window form the rear end. A narrow, black high-gloss element with an integrated light strip extends between the rear lights. This is a feature of top Audi models, accentuating the width of the Q8. It creates an independent light signature day or night, just like on the original quattro back in the day. The distinctive rear diffuser has four vertical fins and an integrated tailpipe trim on each side.

Say hello to the swoopy new Audi Q8 flagship crossover

After an extensive teaser campaign, the covers have finally been removed from the new Audi Q8 flagship crossover, which takes its place at the very summit of the Ingolstadt-based automaker’s growing SUV range. And it’s scheduled to arrive in South Africa towards the end of 2018.

Revealed in the city of Shenzhen in China, the production version of the new Q8 doesn’t stray far from the pair of concepts that preceded it (the first unveiled in Detroit in January 2017 and the second two months later in Geneva), and has been conceived to take on the likes of the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé.

Sharing much of its running gear with the Q7 (and thus also closely related to Volkswagen Group siblings in the form of the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg), Audi says its new five-seater flagship crossover “combines the elegance of a four-door luxury coupé with the practical versatility of a large SUV”, and adds that it is “tough enough for off-road duty”.

The new SUV-coupé is wider, shorter and lower than the Q7, and features a completely different face and sloping roofline. In addition, the Slovakia-built Q8’s spoiler, wheel-arch trim, door trim strips and diffuser will come in a contrasting colour.

Audi says the Quattro-equipped Q8’s “purely mechanical” centre differential transfers forces to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 as standard. When required, it transfers “the majority” to the axle with the better traction. In addition, it features as much 254 mm of ground clearance and hill descent control. The suspension arrangement comes with damper control as standard, while adaptive air suspension will be offered as an option.

Audi makes no mention of engine options in its initial press material, although we know that a 213 kW/600 N.m 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel (wearing the “50 TDI” badge) will be offered from launch, with a detuned version and a 3,0-litre TFSI to follow at a later stage. In addition, the German automaker has confirmed that it will offer the latest mild hybrid technology on the Q8, incorporating a 48-volt primary electrical system with a lithium-ion battery and a belt alternator starter.

Inside, you’ll find two large displays: the upper 10,1-inch screen is used for controlling the infotainment and navigation systems, while the 8,6-inch display below that covers heating and air conditioning, convenience functions and text input. Then, of course, there’s the now-familiar digital virtual cockpit with its high-resolution 12,3-inch display, as well as a head-up display.

Beautiful! Love the aggressive front. But not a fan of those fake exhaust tips, this thing deserves some massive exhausts!

Spy Shots: 2020 Audi RSQ8

With the new Audi Q8 having just been revealed, attention has now turned to Audi's RS division. Would it be keen on producing an RSQ8? The answer is yes, and it has been spied undergoing testing.

These photos show the new Audi RSQ8 being put through its paces. There's very little disguise on the prototypes, giving us a good look at the wider body, more aggressive bumpers, monstrous exhausts and huge alloy wheels. Lurking behind those wheels will be large brakes and we'd guess right away that the new Audi RSQ8 will feature ceramics. As for final styling cues, we can look to the 2017 Q8 Sport Concept and 2017 Q8 Concept for inspiration.

In terms of engine, we'd speculate that it will be the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 motor as the one found in the new Lamborghini Urus, however, it's likely to be slightly down on power, giving its more premium sibling the edge. In the Urus, it puts out 478 kW and 850 Nm through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels. We'd guess that the RSQ8 will push out at most 450 kW, to avoid upsetting the Italians. Still, it'll be able to blitz to 100 kph in under 4 seconds, making it one very quick luxurious SUV. In terms of rivals, you're looking at the BMW X6 M and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S.

The Audi Q8 is scheduled to arrive in SA before the end of 2018, but it will be some time before the RSQ8 lands here. We estimate that it could be in SA towards the end of 2019.
