Should I buy one?

If you like big luxury cars, and big Audi SUVs in particular, perhaps you should buy one - eventually. But I’m not sure now’s the right moment.

Because even as it is, the Q8’s chassis is ready for more than 282bhp – and, I suspect, more than 335bhp as well. And until more alluring performance engines are added to the range, the car’s appeal as a top-level SUV won’t be fully realised, and its ability to take its owner a step beyond the driving experience of a Q7, as it really ought to, will remain in question, at least to this tester.

So the best is probably yet to come from the Q8. For the moment, although it’s not short on admirable qualities, it feels a little bit like a ‘by the numbers’ effort, when it really ought to have been the sort of flagship dreamboat SUV to breathe even more life into the brand.

Wait, what? Audi RS Q8 will reportedly outpower the Urus!

A fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests that the upcoming Audi RS Q8 could churn out a whopping 500 kW and 850 N.m, which would make it not only the most powerful production model in the Ingolstadt-based automaker’s storied history, but also lend it more punch than its Lamborghini Urus stablemate.

According to the folks over at Autocar, the RS Q8 is set to be unveiled in 2019, and will be powered by the electrified twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine already used in the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (although Audi’s SUV will, of course, be somewhat heavier).

If the hottest version of Audi’s recently revealed Q8 does indeed inherit the full-fat output of the hybridised Porsche, it’ll outpunch the R8 V10 Plus by some 51 kW and the Urus by 22 kW (although the Audi will only match the Lamborghini’s peak torque figure). The British publication speculates that the newcomer should hit 100 km/h from standstill in around 4,0 seconds.

If that does indeed turn out to be the case, the RS Q8 will be quicker to three figures than the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 and the BMW X6 M. Still, Autocar does point out that high-performance hybrid versions of both the Porsche Cayenne and Urus are expected to follow the RS Q8, and likely outpower it…

Should I buy one?

There’s still a lot to like here, then. In addition to the way it drives, the Q8 also has a hugely spacious, luxuriously appointed cabin, while its 605-litre boot isn’t devoid of space either. If that’s what you’re after, you likely won’t be disappointed.

But the sense that there’ll be even more to like about the Q8 in a few months, or even a year’s time, hasn’t faded. As good as it might be now, the genuine article, Q flagship seems as though it’s yet to arrive.

After the recent release of the new Audi Q8, it was surely a matter of time before German tuner ABT Sportsline, “the worlds biggest tuner for Audi and Volkswagen”, set about “reworking” the newest member of the Q family.

This 50 TDI is equipped with the firm’s Power performance package and updated engine control unit, upping the 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel’s original 210 kW and 600 N.m outputs to 243 kW and 650 N.m, respectively.

According to ABT, these upgrades provide Ingolstadt’s new crossover with “maximum reliability and optimal power delivery”.

The most notable exterior upgrades are the black 22-inch ABT wheels that can be specified in either matte with a diamond-coated surface or gloss with a diamond-turned rim flange.

To remind owners that this is no run-of-the-mill Q8, puddle lighting projects ABT’s logo.

According to the firm, while in the past it had avoided Coupé-styled crossover projects, the new Q8’s sleek profile offered enough promise to be given the full ABT treatment.

If they make that grille any bigger they will need to install nets so that you don't get hadedas, dogs and small children caught in it.

I am also not digging the new naming convention at all ('55 TFSI'). Just call it the Audi Kuwait 2.0 TFSI or 3.0 TDI or whatever and get it over with
