Verdict

Did we think the market needed the Q8? No, at first we believed the newcomer was an over-the-top novelty, which, to be fair, it kind of is. But this Audi is a heart-over-head proposition. Image-conscious high-rolling buyers are all too ready to fling their cash at the latest and greatest, and the Q8 is destined to find favour. The looks are ridiculously on-point, while the advanced and immaculate cabin comfortably outguns everything else this side of a Mercedes-AMG G-Class. Granted, there are cheaper offerings in this segment, but for sheer bragging rights, it's hard to ignore the Q8.

Should you buy one? If you want a stylish, distinctive and technologically advanced 5-seater SUV, which has a reasonable load bay and rear-seat comfort, then yes, you ought to consider it, but perhaps wait for the more sensible diesel-powered derivative. If you need more space, then look to the Q7, which is due for a refresh soon. And, if you want more performance, it's rumoured that an SQ8 will soon be unveiled. The Range Rover Sport was recently updated, but the X6 and GLE Coupe are on their last legs, in terms of sheer freshness and daring, Audi has stolen a march!

Audi reveals hot SQ8 as new flagship SUV

429bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine is firm's most powerful V8 in Europe

Audi has revealed the new hot SQ8 as its flagship SUV, featuring a 429bhp mild hybrid turbodiesel V8 engine.

The 4.0-litre biturbo unit offered in the range-topping performance version of the coupe-inspired Q8 large SUV is the most powerful V8 offered by the firm in Europe. It produces 664lb ft and powers the seven-seater from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155mph.

The diesel, which automatically turns off one of the two turbochargers at low speeds to boost fuel economy, is mated to a 48V mild hybrid system, operated through a belt alternator starter connected to the crankshaft. It can generate up to 11bhp under braking, and allow the SQ8 to coast without the engine active for up to 40 seconds at speeds between 34 and 100mph.

As standard, the car sits on adaptive air suspension, which can adjust the ride height by up to 90mm, and features electromechanical active roll stabilisation, which uses an electric motor to reduce body movement.

All-wheel steering is available as an option, either by itself or as part of the advanced suspension package.

Audi SQ8 Is a 900 Nm Monster

The long-awaited Audi SQ8 has finally been revealed and it comes to market packing a massive diesel punch. Here's what you need to know about Ingolstadt's luxury performance SUV.

Right now, there's just a turbocharged V6 petrol engine available for the Audi Q8 in South Africa. It produces 250 kW and 500 Nm, giving it credible performance figures. There'll be a diesel V6 joining the lineup later in 2019 too and with 183 kW and 600 Nm. It'll be the more frugal of the 2 derivatives, but what if you wanted more?

Introducing the new Audi SQ8 which should be coming to SA in 2020. Powered by the same 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine as the SQ7 and Bentley Bentayga, the SQ8 pushes out a cracking 320 kW and 900 Nm. What's impressive is Audi claims all that torque is available from 1 000 rpm. The secret here is the e-turbochargers and sequential charging which is claimed to eliminate lag.

New Audi SQ8 confirmed for South Africa with 900 N.m V8 TDI heart!

The new Audi SQ8 has been revealed, with the local arm of the Ingolstadt-based firm confirming the diesel-powered performance SUV is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2020.

While the standard Q8 offered locally is powered by a 250 kW/500 N.m 3,0-litre V6 turbopetrol (and an oil-burning Q8 45 TDI variant is set to join the line-up soon), the fresh-faced SQ8 is set to take things a step further.

Yes, the 4,0-litre V8 twin-turbodiesel engine under the swoopy S-badged SUV’s bonnet is effectively borrowed from the SQ7 (which didn’t ever make it to SA) and Bentley Bentayga Diesel, offering 320 kW and a stonking 900 N.m. That grunt it directed to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Audi SQ8 debuts with potent V8 diesel

Audi has unleashed the ‘S’ version of its Q8 flagship crossover and it’s powered by Europe’s most powerful diesel engine.

Due to hit South African streets in early 2020, the SQ8 TDI has a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel that produces 320Nm and 900Nm of torque, the latter available from just 1250rpm.

The result is genuine sports car performance, the SQ8 sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 4.8 seconds, according to claims, while the top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

Audi SQ8 TDI

The top tier Audi luxury SUV is about to show a harder-edged side to its character as a brawny V8 TDI with 435PS and 900Nm of torque thrusts its performance squarely into 'S' model territory with the introduction of the new Audi SQ8 TDI.

Power and efficiency: 4.0 TDI with electric powered compressor

The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 in the Audi SQ8 TDI will be notable as the most powerful diesel engine available on the European market. It combines its potency with a high level of economy and integrates a whole package of high-tech solutions. The engine delivers 435PS and a mammoth 900 Nm (663.8 lb-ft) of torque between 1,250 and 3,250 rpm, credentials that enable it to propel the SQ8 like a sports car: acceleration from rest to 62mph requires just 4.8 seconds, soon after which the electronic propulsion limit kicks in at 155mph. The power of the V8 engine is emphasised by an engine cover specific to the S model series. Red applications flank the striking contours of the cylinder and visualise the air ducting.

In the eight cylinder heads, the intake side is on the outside and the hot exhaust side with the two turbochargers is in the inner "V." As a result, the gas travel paths are short, working in favour of immediacy of response. The turbos are operated according to the principle of sequential turbocharging. Only one charger is active at low engine speeds; the second charger exerts its influence from around 2,200 rpm. The sonorous sound of the eight-cylinder engine is amplified by a sound actuator in the exhaust system, which drivers can adjust to their personal preferences via Audi drive select.

Hit or miss? Lumma Design reveals its take on the Audi Q8

This is, er, "interesting" to look at. Lumma Design has revealed its new “tailor-made aerodynamics package” for the Audi Q8, handing Ingolstadt’s flagship SUV even more extroverted exterior styling.

Dubbed the Lumma CLR 8S, the package includes enlarged wheelarches, a front spoiler extension, a bonnet attachment, chunkier side-sills, a new rear apron (complete with a diffuser element and four tailpipes), a roof spoiler and an extra lip that runs below the rear screen and above the full-length taillamps.

The Winterlingen-based tuner says all components included in the package are manufactured from “high-quality materials” from Germany, and are optionally offered in visible carbon-fibre guise.

Audi SQ8 TDI 2019 review

Should I buy one?

This feels like the sort of car for someone who’s been around the block with fast SUVs once or twice already. Someone who would value its just-so compromise of pace and space; of cruising range, ride comfort and driver appeal; of offroad capability, onboard technology and luxury; and the status it implies and desirability it reflects, blended with an understated performance aesthetic.

Those looking for the biggest, loudest, fastest, most exciting or most bombastic luxury 4x4 for the money should probably apply elsewhere. But if you’ve got just the right number of friends, and an Alpine ski chalet at just the right altitude that you like to drive to two or three times a year, it could suit that champagne-and-fondue lifestyle of yours very well indeed.

New Audi SQ8: chassis boss says SUV is tuned for ‘big slides

The chassis product manager for the new Audi SQ8 claims “you can get some big slides” in Ingolstadt’s latest performance SUV.

Speaking to Autocar, chassis product manager William Wijts said the SQ8’s air suspension and anti-roll system allowed the vehicle be to tuned to oversteer.

"The The key challenge is balancing the weight and the systems,” he said of the new model, which is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2020.

“With the anti-roll, you can tune this car and make it oversteer,” he added.

Wijts added that although he wasn’t usually a fan of SUVs, the SQ8 offered “fun”.
