2019 Audi Q8

Audi SQ8 Capable Of “Some Big Slides”

Back in June, the Audi Sport crew revealed their new SQ8 packing a turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 diesel producing 429 hp (320 kW).

It is scheduled to arrive in South Africa during the first quarter of 2020 and will complete the 100 km/h sprint in just 4.8 seconds.

Autocar recently spoke with William Wijts who is the chassis product manager who confirmed that the air suspension and anti-roll system fitted to the new Audi SQ8 makes it feel more like a performance car than an SUV.

Audi Q8 handed extra TFSI-flavoured oomph (and bolder styling)

ABT Sportsline has released details of its tuning package for the 3,0 TFSI engine used in the Audi Q8, while also handing Ingolstadt’s flagship SUV bolder styling.

Thanks to the fitment of the tuner’s ABT engine control unit, the petrol-powered V6 now generates 300 kW and 550 N.m (up from the stock engine’s 250 kW and 500 N.m). What effect this has on the SUV’s performance figures remains to be seen, though it’ll surely cut a couple of tenths from the claimed 0-100 km/h time of 5,9 seconds.

New Audi SQ8's turbodiesel V8 boosted to 375 kW by ABT Sportsline!

The new Audi SQ8 (which is scheduled to hit South Africa in the first quarter of 2020) isn't exactly lacking in oomph. But that hasn’t stopped ABT Sportsline from handing Ingolstadt’s diesel-powered flagship SUV even more power.

Yes, thanks to a spot of tinkering (in this case, seemingly little more than the addition of a new engine control unit), the German tuner has boosted the 4,0-litre twin-turbodiesel V8’s peak outputs from the standard 320 kW and 900 N.m to an even more impressive 375 kW and 970 N.m.

With all that grunt still directed to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission (and the powertrain retaining its 48 V mild hybrid system), the ABT-tuned version should hit 100 km/h from standstill in about 4,5 seconds (that’s three-tenths quicker than standard).

970Nm ABT upgrade makes Audi's SQ8 more menacing than ever

Audi’s SQ8 is now more menacing than ever with the release of ABT’s new aero kit, which joins the recently announced performance upgrades for Audi’s sportiest diesel SUV.

The standard SQ8 is already Germany’s most powerful diesel SUV, with its 4-litre V8 engine developing 320kW and 900Nm, and the German tuner has cranked it up to a heady 375kW and 970Nm through its ABT Power engine control unit. This, says ABT, is enough to get it from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 seconds, a cool 0.2s quicker than the standard car.

ABT has upgraded the air suspension too, most notably with a ‘Coffee-Mode’ that makes the vehicle 65mm lower than in the original comfort mode. ABT Comfort Level and ABT Dynamic Level can also be configured at the touch of a button.

Audi SQ7 and SQ8 handed the V8 TFSI treatment … for some markets

Audi has confirmed it will offer its refreshed SQ7 and new SQ8 in V8 petrol form in some markets after revealing the two performance SUVs in diesel flavour in 2019.

While the TDI-badged versions already confirmed for South Africa each employ a 4,0-litre V8 twin-turbodiesel engine (assisted by an electrically powered compressor, which is fed by a 48 V system) offering 320 kW and a stonking 900 N.m, the models destined for markets such as North America will interestingly wear TFSI badging.

These variants will employ Ingolstadt’s turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine, here generating 373 kW and 770 N.m. Audi claims this is enough for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a little over 4,3 seconds (that's nearly half a second quicker than the oil-burning derivatives).

As with the diesel-powered SQ7 and SQ8, the US-spec models each feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard quattro all-wheel drive, with top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Tested: Audi Q8 stands tall among premium SUVs

VERDICT

The Audi Q8 is a worthy flagship in the SUV range and as far as a combination of executive and family transport is is concerned it slides seamlessly between the two.

Loaded with technology and safety features even in standard guise, the Q8 stands tall among the SUV brigade without trying to be all things to all people.

Pricing and warranty

Our test unit came with numerous extras, adding R153 570 to the value of the vehicle. Headlining the options list was the S line Platinum Package (R80 840), which included things like adaptive air suspension, S line exterior package, 22-inch wheels and red brake callipers. A trailer hitch (R17 070) was fitted, as were power-latching doors (R10 020), the latter function closes the doors softly if you didn't push them hard enough. Our Audi Q8 also came with the phone box, which includes wireless charging for mobile devices.

The Audi Q8 45TDI quattro's base price is R1 573 500, which includes a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan. Lane departure warning (R5 380), lane change assist (R9 210) and advanced tyre pressure monitoring system (R4 690) were 3 noteworthy additions to the safety package, which we'd also recommend for your consideration.

Verdict

Does the addition of a turbodiesel powertrain broaden the appeal of the Audi Q8 and, importantly, can the oil-burning 45 TDI quattro outshine its petrol-powered 55 TFSI quattro sibling? We can confidently answer: "Yes, on both counts." Granted, there's something magical about a lusty petrol V6 that likes to clear its throat, but logically, the turbodiesel motor offers significantly more talents. The benefits are numerous – the Q8 45TDI is a more refined open-road cruiser, the engine doesn't need to be worked hard to produce eye-widening acceleration and, best of all, if you drive with a measured driving style, you'll be rewarded with impressive economy. It's just a more accomplished offering.

Drawbacks? Well, there aren't many, but some are worth mentioning. We're puzzled by 45 TDI quattro's price premium over its similarly-engined Q7 sibling. Granted, the Q7 is due for a facelift before the end of 2020 (which will no doubt result in a price increase), but it's hard to justify the R400 000 difference between the derivatives. That being said, when you compare the 2 vehicles, the Q8 offers way more kerb- and road presence; many wouldn't look twice at the Q7, but the Q8 is a "limelight-stealer" of note.

And, if you demand more performance from the Q8 package, Audi South Africa has confirmed it will be introducing the potent SQ8 and RS Q8 before the end of 2020...

Audi SQ8 TFSI

Audi presented the SQ7 and the SQ8 with new TFSI engines. The brand is thus responding to the worldwide trend toward sporty gasoline engines in the high-performance SUV segment. The Audi SQ7 and SQ8 feature numerous high-tech suspension components and offer new connectivity and assistance functions. They will launch on the European markets beginning in autumn 2020.

With its output of 373 kW (507 PS) and 770 Nm (567.9 lb-ft) of torque, the 4.0 TFSI gasoline engine propels the large Audi SQ7 and SQ8 extremely powerfully. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) takes just 4.1 seconds; acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h (49.7 to 74.6 mph) just 3.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h (155.3 mph). Depending on the equipment chosen, the SQ7 consumes between 12.1 and 12.0 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (19.4 - 19.6 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 278 to 276 grams per kilometer (447.4- 444.2 g/mi). For the SQ8, these figures are also 12.1 to 12.0 liters (19.4 - 19.6 US mpg) and 276 to 275 grams CO2 (444.2 - 442.6 g/mi)).

2020 Audi SQ7 and SQ8 gain new 500bhp petrol V8

Twin-turbo 4.0-litre unit replaces the diesel V8 introduced just last year, bringing improved performance

Audi’s SQ7 and SQ8 performance SUVs have swapped their diesel V8 for a more powerful petrol V8, less than a year after the diesel version went on sale.

The new twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre unit’s 500bhp output marks a significant 71bhp increase over the outgoing diesel, but torque is down 96lb ft at 568lb ft. Both cars are now capable of covering 0-62mph in 4.1sec - a 0.7sec improvement - and 50-75mph in just 3.8sec. Top speed is an electronically limited 155mph.

Unlike the diesel, the TFSI petrol motor does not feature 48V mild-hybrid technology, but Audi highlights new efficiency-boosting features, such as a ‘cylinder on demand’ system, which shuts down four cylinders when possible to reduce fuel consumption, and optimised gas exchange between the turbochargers and chambers for improved combustion.

Audi SA to launch SQ7 and SQ8 in TDI form (but ‘considering’ TFSI, too)

Audi South Africa says it plans to launch the SQ7 and SQ8 in TDI form before the end of 2020, while also “considering” bringing in the new TFSI versions at a later stage.

Back in January 2020, the Ingolstadt-based firm announced petrol-flavoured versions of the SQ7 and SQ8 for North America. Now, Europe has followed suit, switching from the earlier turbodiesel variants to the TFSI-badged derivatives.

Audi SA told CARmag.co.za, though, it would “launch with the TDI engine for both models”, generating 310 kW in SA-spec form. The German company’s local arm furthermore said the “TFSI engine is currently being considered” but emphasised it is “not yet confirmed” for a local introduction.
