I-Pace coming to SA: How Jaguar hopes to make it work

The I-Pace is Jaguar's first all-electric car, but as it has no proprietary recharging infrastructure in place in South Africa (where the newcomer will be launched in 2019), how does the Coventry-based premium brand plan to get the ball rolling and dispel doubts about range anxiety, charging station locations and reliability?

In March this year, Jaguar unveiled its first electric vehicle, the I-Pace at the Geneva Motor Show and via a global livestream. Regarded as the first true competitor to the Tesla Model X, the I-Pace will be fitted with an in-house designed, liquid-cooled 90 kWh Lithium-ion battery that is capable of obtaining an 80% charge in 45 minutes using a DC 100 kW charger. One full charge has a claimed range of 480 km.

The car is expected to arrive in South Africa in the first half of 2019, which is now more or less a year away. And the biggest question that remains, without a doubt, is does the republic have enough infrastructure to sustain growth in the sales of full EVs?

When the I-Pace lands next year, it will have the largest range of any EV on sale in SA.

Jaguar Land Rover South Africa’s public relations officer Izak Louw confirms that the company has invested close to R1 billion in upgrades to dealer facilities in preparation for the arrival of the I-Pace and other electrified vehicles such as the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. As a result, by the time the I-Pace arrives, 32 charging points will have been installed at all Jaguar Land Rover retailers.

Britain’s largest vehicle manufacturer has already invested £15 billion (R247 billion) on products and new technology in the last 5 years and aims to offer some degree of electrification on every new Jaguar Land Rover model from 2020 onwards, globally.

In preparation for the introduction to the South African market, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has engaged with government, energy providers, and the industry. The success of any new technology depends largely on demand, supported by infrastructure.

Jaguar showed off the I-Pace's speed by racing it against a Tesla Model X and winning.

“Government has a key role to play, currently electric vehicles do not benefit from trade agreements,” says Louw. “Government can also stimulate the development of, and investment in, the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicles.”

JLR is currently engaging with stakeholders on compliance and legal issues, but cannot comment further about this. However, the company, along with industry partners like the Electric Vehicle Industry Association (EVIA) have lobbied for more favourable duty rates.

“Currently Electric vehicles do not benefit from trade agreements i.e. Internal Combustion (ICE) engines sourced from the UK have an 18% duty rate, but Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) are subject to 25% duty,” adds Louw.

Hiten Parmar of the EVIA says the processes that define local market introductions would be relative to the respective operating environment for electric vehicles across import duties, taxes, and incentives. “Currently in South Africa, the status taxation of electric vehicles is not conducive for new model introductions due to the high import duty and ad valorem, which totals in the region of 43% and, as such, consumers are faced with additional costs within pricing of electric vehicles in South Africa,” says Parmar.

The interior is original to the I-Pace featuring displays that help to get the most out of your electric range.

EVIA says there is a collaborative effort within the respective industry stakeholders for a request to the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) of the Department of Trade and Industry for a reduction of the import tariffs imposed on electric vehicles.

While there is no current local manufacturing of electric vehicles in South Africa by any manufacturer, there should ideally be a more favourable import tariff schedule for electric vehicles in order to grow the uptake of electric vehicles. “The high import tariff for electric vehicles is structured to protect a local manufacturing industry that neither builds nor assembles electric vehicles,” Parmar says, quite pointedly.

The I-Pace still needs to stand up to the inherent sportiness of the Jaguar brand, we eagerly await a full test of it.

In the meantime, JLR says its biggest challenge with launching an electric car in South Africa comes down to 3 things: range anxiety, battery life, and infrastructure.

Louw says South Africans have had very limited exposure and experience with BEV, and that range anxiety tends to be a primary question with consumers. “Consumers are used to products with 180 km to 300 km range limit with extended charging times. I-Pace will deliver up to 480 km range and typical 50 kW charger can deliver up to 270 km of range per hour.”

Louw also believes that the likelihood of battery failure is driven by laptop and phone experience and some adverse EV publicity. “Jaguar Land Rover will offer an 8-year or 160 000 km warranty and is redeemable if the battery drops below a 70% state of health. This warranty will provide total peace of mind to all BEV customers.” Comparatively, new Jaguar cars come with a 5-year/100 000 km warranty as standard.

An 8-year/160 000 km warranty on the I-Pace is quite a statement considering all other Jags come with 5-year/100 000 km warranties.

To address the infrastructure issue, the company is aware that consumers are faced with a disjointed public charging infrastructure, and will offer a robust home charging strategy backed up by public charging. The company is also in talks with numerous stakeholders on charging infrastructure, but cannot confirm anything at this stage. The 2 other local players, BMW and Nissan teamed up to provide dual charging stations (stations equipped with 2 different plugs) for consumers. The new I-Pace is compatible with the BMW port and could theoretically be used by both BMW i owners and Jaguar I-Pace owners. This means that Jaguar owners would have access to 86 charging points around the country.

JLR says all its dealerships around the country will be ready for the I-Pace launch next year, offering full sales and service capabilities with charging facilities at all retailers. Louw says they have received “unprecedented levels of interest” for the I-Pace already and those who registered on the website will be contacted first to place their orders next year.

Pricing for the I-Pace has not been announced yet, but Jaguar has indicated that it will include an installed home charging solution.

Should I buy one?

You must decide first if any electric car is suited to your circumstances. If not, turn over… I mean navigate away. There is nothing here for you, because the I-Pace comes with all the charging and range issues that, however mitigated, should still be by far the single largest factor to consider in buying any pure electric car.

If it is, I think Jaguar’s courage in being first among its historical opposition to market such a car deserves to be amply rewarded. I’d not go for the super-expensive First Edition because it doesn’t feel quite like an £80k car, but lesser models have the same look and powertrain and are bound to offer better value.

But what matters most here is that the I-Pace looks right, it delivers on that promise when you drive it and it provides a gorgeous home from home from which to operate it. Having impressed with the F-Pace and stumbled over the E-Pace, the I-Pace puts Jaguar not merely back on form but right out in front.

If ever fortune indeed favours the brave in this business, it should not just smile on the I-Pace, but fully beam at it.

Jaguar rolls out 82 new public EV charging stations across SA

Jaguar South Africa has announced that it is rolling out 82 new public charging stations for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles across South Africa, effectively linking up the country’s major cities.

The network of charging stations, which the local arm of the British brand says will be built “in partnership with electric vehicle charging authority GridCars”, is expected to be fully operational by the end of November 2018.

The news comes ahead of the local launch of Jaguar’s first all-electric vehicle, the new I-Pace, which is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2019.

The R30-million infrastructure investment will include publicly available charging stations in customer parking areas at every Jaguar Land Rover retailer in South Africa, plus 30 public charging stations at “various points of convenience” in the country’s major hubs.

Interestingly, the firm says that South Africa’s city centres will be connected by what it terms the “Jaguar Powerway”, a series of 22 charging stations along the N3 between Gauteng and Durban and the N1 between Gauteng and Cape Town. In addition, Cape Town will be connected to the Garden Route with a series of charging stations along the N2 through to East London.

Jaguar SA says the majority of charging stations will use 60 kWh fast chargers, which it claims would result in 100 km of range in about 20 minutes for I-Pace owners. A charge from zero to 80 percent, meanwhile, would take “around 72 minutes”.

Every charging station will also be equipped with a 22 kWh AC fast charger to accommodate plug-in hybrid vehicles. Here, there will be an AC standard Type 2 socket as well as a DC charger fitted with the CCS DC type socket.

The company explains that Jaguar Land Rover owners will use an RFID (radio-frequency identification) card to activate the charging station and manage electricity billing to the card. Cards can be credited with EFT payments, much like cellphone airtime top-ups. Interestingly, charging station electricity rates will be discounted by 25 percent for Jaguar Land Rover owners.

Jaguar Invests in EV Charging Stations for SA

Jaguar has invested R30-million to install new public charging stations in South Africa’s major cities and along major holiday routes in an effort to alleviate range anxiety for owners of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Range anxiety is a major factor preventing the widespread adoption of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in South Africa. We generally travel vast distances and the limited range of electric cars make their adoption difficult to justify, especially when charging infrastructure is limited.

Jaguar is looking to change the situation and has partnered with electric vehicle charging authority, GridCars, to install 82 new charging stations across South Africa with an investment of R30-million. The charging stations will be installed at all Jaguar Land Rover retailers as well as at various points of convenience such as shopping centres, major hubs including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein.

City centres will also be connected by the Jaguar Powerway which comprises a series of 22 charging stations along the N3 between Gauteng and Durban and the N1 between Gauteng and Cape Town. Furthermore, Cape Town will be be connected to the Garden Route with a series of charging stations along the N2 all the way to East London.

Jaguar says that the majority of the charging stations will be 60kWh fast chargers allowing I-PACE owners to charge from zero to 80% in about 72 minutes while 100 km of charge will take about 20 minutes. Each charging station will be equipped with a 22kWh AC fast charger to accommodate plug-in hybrid cars while an AC standard Type 2 socket will allow charging for all electric vehicles available in South Africa.

Jaguar Land Rover owners will make use of an RFID card to activate the charging station and the card can be credited with simple EFT payments, much like topping up your smartphone with airtime. More so, electricity discounts of 25% will apply for all owners of Jaguar Land Rover electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Like fuel prices, the price of electricity fluctuates and currently 1kWh will cost between R3.00 and R3.50 depending on where the electricity is redeemed. In the case of the I-PACE’s 90kWh battery, a full charge will cost between R270 and R315, which is far less than what you would pay to fill up with petrol or diesel.

Jaguar says that the entire charging grid and Powerway infrastructure will be fully operational by the end of November 2018.

Jaguar I-Pace Drives from Jhb to Durban

In an effort to showcase its new I-Pace electric car and charging infrastructure, Jaguar recently completed a trip from Johannesburg to Durban. Range anxiety? What range anxiety?
When it comes to electric cars, the number one worry is always to do with range anxiety. "There aren't enough chargers in SA" , "I can only drive around my city" and "I can't go away for the weekend" are just some of the complaints we've seen. Granted, in comparison to the rest of the world, South Africa has lagged behind in this field of transportation but recently, Jaguar allayed many fears by completing a journey from Johannesburg to Durban in a pre-production I-Pace electric car. We say pre-production I-Pace because this car is here for testing and homologation. Jaguar wants to make 100% sure that it will work in our market, before it is properly launched in our market in early 2019.

The challenge was simple. Drive the Jaguar I-Pace from Jaguar Centurion in Gauteng to Durban. After filling its 90 kWh battery, the car set off. After 310 km, it recharged at the 60 kW fast charger which has been installed at the Bergview rest stop in Harrismith, Free State. Once it was charged back up to 100%, it set off for the coast, completing another 306 km and reaching the Durban Harbour.

It is important to note that in the time it took to recharge in Harrismith, the driver was able to enjoy a meal at a restaurant, meaning that it took about an hour to charge. Jaguar also claims that this recharge in Harrismith cost around a quarter of what it would take to fill up an average big SUV, so we're going to estimate and say that's around R250.

The Harrismith charger forms part of the Jaguar Powerway network which boasts 82 new chargers for all electric cars and plug-in hybrids in the major cities and along popular highways. Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein will soon be linked up for electric cars to travel on. The N3 from Jhb to Durban, for example, will receive another 3 chargers by the time the Jaguar I-Pace officially launches in the first quarter of 2019. Jaguar's R30 million investment will mean 30 fast chargers placed at every Jaguar Land Rover dealership, 30 at various shopping centres nationwide and 22 along the N1, N2 and N3 motorways.

In terms of practicality, the I-Pace offers 890 mm rear legroom as well as a large 10.5-litre central storage compartment made possible by the absence of a transmission tunnel. Rear passengers can also make use of tablet/laptop stowage under the rear seat. Luggage capacity is rated at 656 litres which expands to 1 453 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Here's how much you'll pay for Jaguar's electric I-Pace

If you’ve been budgeting for a new Jaguar I-Pace, you can now prepare your finances with more precision. Jaguar South Africa has confirmed three trim grades, a variety of specification levels, and a 'First Edition' that will be available for one year from launch.

All variants come with identical powertrains comprising a 90kWh battery positioned in the floor for a low centre of gravity, and two axle-mounted synchronous electric motors paired with concentric single speed transmissions.

Its 294kW/696Nm peak outputs are enough to launch the all-wheel drive SUV from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds, and a single full charge provides a range of up to 470km on the WLTP cycle – which Jag says is more than enough to cover the average weekly commute of 300km.

Here's what you can expect in terms of appointments across the I-PACE range:

I-Pace HSE: 20" 5 spoke alloy wheels with Diamond Turned finish, Matrix LED headlights, powered gesture tailgate, Windsor leather sport seats (18-way adjustable as well as heated and cooled upfront, and heated in the rear).
