SA racing icons to tackle Hillclimb in electric Jag
Jaguar has called on three icons of South African motorsport to compete at this year’s Simola Hillclimb in a trio of identical, battery-powered Jaguars in Knysna from May 3 to 5.
First held in 2009, the Hillclimb celebrates its 10th anniversary this May and as always the racing will kick off on Friday, May 3, with the annual Classic Car Friday competition.
This will be followed by the King of the Hill practice and qualifying sessions on Saturday, two more qualifying runs on Sunday morning and the coveted King of the Hill finale on Sunday afternoon.
Mike Briggs, Deon Joubert and Shaun Watson-Smith - who were well-known in the heyday of petrol-powered touring cars throughout the 1990s, will tackle the 1.9km Simola Hillclimb in Jaguar I-Paces.
With well over 20 circuit racing championship titles between them, Briggs, Joubert and Watson-Smith can be considered South African racing royalty.
The trio has competed at the front of various South African and international racing series including Group N, SA Touring Cars, British Touring Cars, Asian Touring Cars, Production Cars and V8 Modifieds among many others.
Briggs, a nine-time champion, said: “Racing at the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb is such an exciting opportunity, and to do it in a powerful EV like the I-Pace will make all the more interesting.

Jaguar I-Pace secures another major award
British brand's electric SUV has been named 2019 World Car of the Year
The Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV has claimed another trophy, being named the 2019 World Car of the Year.
The British EV added the title, announced at the New York motor show, to the 2019 European Car of the Year award it secured earlier this year.
As well as overall victory in World Car of the Year, the I-Pace won the Green Car and Design categories. The awards are voted for by an international panel of motoring journalists.
The Audi A7 Sportback won the Luxury Car prize, while the utilitarian Suzuki Jimny off-roader was named best Urban Car and Britain's McLaren 720S supercar took the Performance Car title.

Jaguar I-Pace Is World Car of The Year
The electric Jaguar I-Pace has won the 2019 World Car of the Year title.
The win is Jaguar Land Rover's second overall victory as the F-Pace won back in 2017. Aside from taking the overall title, the Jaguar I-Pace also bagged the World Green Car award which is the first time JLR has won in this category. Completing the trifecta was the World Car Design Award. The string of victories comes on the back of the Jaguar I-Pace winning the European Car of the Year title.
Other noteworthy wins went to the McLaren 720S for World Performance Car, Audi A7 took the World Luxury Car category and the Suzuki Jimny took top honours in the Urban Compact Car.
Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “It is an honour that the Jaguar I-PACE has received such an accolade from the prestigious World Car jurors.“We started with an ideal, to move towards our Destination Zero vision; zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion. Jaguar confirms I-Pace recall for potential brake issue
System failure on 2018 and 2019 models could result in extended stopping distances
Jaguar has issued a voluntary global recall notice for its I-Pace electric SUV.
Owners of 2018 and early 2019 models have been advised of a fault with the I-Pace’s electrical regenerative braking system, which could result in extended stopping distances.
The fault will not present itself except in the event of a failure of the regenerative system, which isn’t an issue that has been reported.

Is the concept of a 'car' incorrect? Well, Jaguar has consulted the dictionary and decided it needs changing.
In a bizarre instance of semantic principle meeting marketing opportunity, Jaguar is pressuring the world’s authority of all things English, to change its definition of a ‘car’.
When you are in doubt, the Oxford English Dictionary is your reference guide to understanding, checking and correctly using 600 000 different English words.
One of those 600 000 words is presenting an issue for automotive companies which are transitioning from internal-combustion to battery-powered vehicles.
For decades the word ‘car’ has hardly generated a complaint to Oxford English Dictionary staff. But if you read the definition, there is an issue.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines a car as:” ‘a road vehicle powered by a motor (usually an internal combustion engine) designed to carry a driver and a small number of passengers, and usually having two front and two rear wheels, esp. for private, commercial, or leisure use’.
