The new Ceed is out & it no longer has an apostrophe.

Kia Ceed

Kia Motors has revealed the all-new Kia Ceed, ahead of its world debut at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. Now in its third generation, the Kia Ceed - designed, developed, engineered and built in Europe - strengthens Kia's presence in the European C-segment with innovative new technologies, a mature and athletic new design, and a more engaging drive.

Since the first-generation Kia cee'd started production at Kia's new Slovakian manufacturing facility in December 2006, more than 1.28 million units have been built. A new naming format - cee'd becomes Ceed - consolidates its reputation as a car for the Community of Europe, with European Design. More than 640,000 of the second-generation model have been built since production began in 2012. As it enters its third iteration, the Ceed is expected to account for an even greater proportion of Kia's European sales.

Like its predecessors, the model has been designed, developed and engineered in Frankfurt by Kia's European design, product development and R&D teams. It will be manufactured at the brand's production facility in ilina, Slovakia, alongside the Kia Sportage and Kia Venga.

Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer for Kia Motors Europe, comments: "The Kia Ceed has been a lynchpin in the brand's consistent growth across Europe for more than a decade. Created for European buyers, the introduction of the Ceed in 2006 represented a watershed moment for Kia.

"Building on these solid foundations, the all-new Ceed offers a truly contemporary and recognisable design, and advanced technologies to enhance comfort, convenience and safety. Its new engines and suspension will make it more enjoyable and engaging to drive, and will continue to offer the same high quality that customers expect from Kia. This will be one of the most innovative cars in its class."

The Kia Ceed will make its public debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, where a second body style will also be unveiled for the first time. The five-door hatchback will enter production in May. Sales of the Ceed will begin in Q2 of 2018 in left-hand-drive markets across Europe. The UK on-sale date and pricing will be announced in due course.

An expanded role for the Ceed in the European C-segment

In 2017, the C-segment accounted for 22 per cent of all European vehicle sales, and is consistently one of the two largest segments by volume. The outgoing cee'd accounted for 16 per cent of Kia's total European sales in 2017, and has consistently ranked alongside the Sportage as one of the brand's best-selling models in Europe since its re-launch in 2012.

Michael Cole comments: "In 2006, Kia's share of the European market was around 1.5 per cent. In 2017, our market share reached 3.0 per cent. Since the introduction of the Ceed, Kia's annual European sales have more than doubled, from 225,000 in 2006 to more than 472,000 in 2017. In the medium term, we are targeting annual sales of more than 500,000 vehicles. The Ceed model family will therefore continue to underpin the sustained growth of the Kia brand for years to come, remaining one of our best-selling product lines."

The Ceed occupies a unique position in the Kia line-up, perceived by buyers as the most dynamic and sporty vehicle to drive, while also being one of the most reliable, practical and recognisable. Aided by an expanded product line-up, which grew with the arrival of GT and GT-Line models, Kia's C-segment hatchback represents the 'centre' of the brand.

Michael Cole adds: "The Ceed has become a recognisable sight on European roads, and buyers understand what it represents for Kia. It is a talisman for reliability and quality in the segment, with customers appreciating its safety and comfort technologies, and the fact that it is designed, developed, engineered and built here in Europe. The new model will reinforce and build upon these strengths."

New, Third-Generation Kia Ceed Hatchback Unveiled

Kia has officially taken the wraps off its new, third-generation Ceed, ahead of the five-door hatchback’s public debut at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. The automaker says that a second Ceed body style will be unveiled alongside the hatch in Gevena.

As the Korean brand has already pointed out (when recently revealing a teaser sketch), the hatchback’s official moniker has been changed from the stylised “cee’d” to the more conventional “Ceed”.

Running on Kia’s new K2 platform, the new Ceed is 20 mm wider (at 1 800 mm) and 23 mm lower (at 1 447 mm) than the outgoing model, while its wheelbase remains unchanged at 2 650 mm. The front overhang has been cut by 20 mm to 880 mm, and rear overhang extended by 20 mm to 780 mm.

The new Ceed boasts a larger, 395-litre boot, while Kia also claims “greater shoulder room” for rear passengers, more headroom in the front row and a lower driving position.

Kia says it will offer an updated version of its 88 kW 1,0-litre turbopetrol engine along with a new 1,4-litre T-GDi power unit. Replacing the naturally aspirated 1,6-litre engine, the new turbocharged 1,4-litre “Kappa” unit produces 103 kW. A 74 kW naturally aspirated 1,4-litre will also be available.

A new “U3” 1,6-litre CRDi will also make its debut in the Ceed, and is set to be offered in 85 kW and 100 kW states of tune. Both output versions of this fresh turbodiesel engine produce 280 N.m.

Every engine will be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, while the new 1,4-litre T-GDi and 1,6-litre CRDi powerplants will also be available with Kia’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Inside, Kia says the Ceed is “more ergonomic than ever”, with “higher-quality materials used throughout”. The facia is laid out horizontally, split into an upper area (for the floating touchscreen infotainment system) and lower area (housing controls for audio and heating and ventilation).

So, will we see this new Ceed in South Africa? Well, Kia Motors SA recently told us that while the broader details (and likely specifically timing) remain “unresolved” at this point, it did indeed still have plans to add the Ceed to its local line-up.

Kia gunning for Golf with new Ceed hatch

Kia has revealed the third generation of its Euro-focused C-segment hatchback ahead of its Geneva Motor Show debut in March and like its Hyundai i30 cousin, the Korean looks to be a far more formidable challenger to the Golf throne.

The new Ceed - previously known as the cee’d - is not just more grammatically correct, it also brings new technologies to the Kia fold, including level two autonomy, and introduces a new turbo engine option.

It is also rumoured that the new Ceed will eventually come to South Africa to replace the Cerato hatch, although we are still awaiting final confirmation from Kia SA.

Designed in Germany and built in Slovakia, the lower, longer and wider third-gen Ceed is initially being introduced as a five-door hatchback, but a second bodystyle (almost certainly a sporty wagon inspired by last year's Proceed Concept) will make its debut at the Geneva show.

The interior layout resembles that in the latest Rio with the central command centre being a ‘floating’ touch screen, which in this case is sized between 12.7 and 17.8 centimetres depending on the variant.

In keeping with its Golf-rivalling ambitions, the new cabin employs more soft-touch surfaces and there are some new high-end optional gadgets, including a JBL Premium sound system and Kia’s Lane Following Assist. This ‘Level Two’ semi-autonomous driving feature provides acceleration, braking and steering assistance, allowing the car to track a vehicle in front at speeds of up to 130km/h.

Although the latter is optional, Kia has packed in a fair amont of standard driver assistance gadgetry, including Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning with Collision-Avoidance Assist, High Beam Assist and Driver Attention Warning.

The Ceed rides on a new fully-independent suspension system that was engineered “exclusively” for European roads.

Topping the engine range for now is a new ‘Kappa’ 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine rated at 103kW and European buyers can also opt for a revised version of Hyundai’s 1-litre turbo triple, with 88kW, a normally aspirated 1.4 or an all-new 1.6-litre turbodiesel with either 85kW or 100kW.

Snazzy. I like it :)

Just a pity about that oddly-placed exhaust pipe. I think it would look better hidden or if there were exhausts both sides instead of just one side

Kia Ceed GT hot hatch coming to tackle Golf GTI?

Kia officials have confirmed that a new Ceed GT hot hatch is on the cards.

Kia has confirmed that it is developing a new Ceed hot hatch that looks set to be positioned against the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The brand, of course, recently took the wraps off its new, third-generation Ceed. And now a fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests a hot version of the five-door hatch is very much on the cards.

Speaking to Autocar, Artur Martins, Kia’s marketing chief in Europe, said that high-performance guru Albert Biermann (the former BMW M chief whose official title is head of vehicle test and high performance development at the Hyundai Motor Group) would be involved in the testing of the upcoming Ceed GT, which is expected to launch in 2019.

Martins told the publication that the Ceed GT would share some characteristics with its Hyundai i30 N cousin, but hinted that it would ultimately be a little more forgiving.

“With Albert’s involvement you will see similar handling and balance, although not at that level [of performance]. It will be more fun than the old car, but it will not be as focused as the i30 N,” Martins told Autocar.

Michael Winkler, Kia’s head of powertrain development in Europe, added that the Ceed GT would not be “as extreme” as the i30 N. The Autocar report speculated that this meant the Kia would employ a detuned version of the hot Hyundai’s turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which makes 202 kW and 353 N.m in its most extreme form.

Kia Ceed Sportswagon

The new Kia Ceed Sportswagon has made its world debut at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. Designed, developed, engineered and built in Europe, this third-generation model is the most practical, spacious and versatile Ceed Sportswagon to date - with more cabin and cargo space than its predecessor.

The new Kia Ceed Sportswagon is the second member of the new Ceed family to be unveiled in Geneva. Following its reveal in February, the Ceed five-door hatchback also makes its public debut today. The expanding Ceed range strengthens Kia's presence in the European C-segment, offering buyers innovative new technologies, a mature and athletic new design, and a more engaging drive.

A C-segment tourer designed to meet the needs of European motorists exclusively, more than 512,000 Ceed Sportswagon models have been built at Kia's Slovakia manufacturing facility since its introduction in 2007. Historically, Sportswagon models have accounted for around 40% of all Ceed sales - compared to around 30% for other C-segment vehicles with tourer variants.

Like its predecessors, the new model has been designed, developed and engineered in Frankfurt by Kia's European design, product development and R&D teams. It will continue to be manufactured in ilina, Slovakia, on the same production line as the new Ceed five-door hatchback, and the Kia Sportage and Kia Venga.

A new naming format - cee'd becomes Ceed - consolidates the new model's reputation as a car for the Community of Europe, with European Design.

So is this meant to be even bigger than the Rio then? With that being more "Polo-sized" ?

Very likely homologation testing. Does not say with certainty it is coming here but it is very very likely.

Let's see if they take ages to confirm like sister company Hyundai & the i30.

Yes, it's bigger. When it came out it was a Golf 6 competitor.

Interesting I always found the Rio to be much bigger than the Polo but not quite a Golf.

Never checked dimensions it was just a perception.

But maybe that was for the lack of the Ceed here that I thought it was covering both bases.

I was more strictly thinking about sizes.

They seemed to be like half sized shoes and in between.
