2019 Kia Ceed

Very likely homologation testing. Does not say with certainty it is coming here but it is very very likely.

Let's see if they take ages to confirm like sister company Hyundai & the i30.

But that's the thing, this car is old, over 6 years. Why bring it now when a new Ceed has been announced. They really must not undermine us like that. They must bring the new model or not bring anything at all.

Interesting I always found the Rio to be much bigger than the Polo but not quite a Golf.

Never checked dimensions it was just a perception.

But maybe that was for the lack of the Ceed here that I thought it was covering both bases.

True, the Rio was bigger.

Ceed is about the same size as the Cerato. I think the Ceed would've pushed better units than the Cerato over here.

Kia Proceed spotted with new swept-back design ahead of October reveal

Third variant of Kia’s new Ceed range will be headed by GT variant

Kia will introduce its sportiest-looking Ceed variant to the range in October when the new Proceed is revealed at the Paris motor show.

Caught on camera testing in Germany and due on sale in Europe at the end of this year, the five-door Proceed features a swept-back roofline that takes clear inspiration from the striking 2017 concept. The front end looks largely identical to the existing hatch and Sportswagon models, but the Proceed is likely to wear sportier bumpers to match the set of 18in wheels that are fitted to the test car.

Kia engineers have already tuned the new Ceed models to offer more engaging handling than the previous generation. The Proceed will make use of the same MacPherson struts at the front and independent multi-link rear suspension set-up as its siblings, which have been tuned at the Nürburgring and also on British roads.

Power will come from the same petrol and diesel engines as those in the hatch and are shared with the model's twin from sister brand Hyundai, the i30. The smallest petrol is a 1.0-litre T-GDi unit that produces 118bhp, while a 1.4-litre T-GDi engine comes in 99bhp and 138bhp forms. The sole diesel, a 1.6-litre CRDi, is offered in 113bhp and 134bhp guises. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a seven-speed dual-clutch 'box available as an option on the 1.4 petrol and the diesel.

Next year, the Ceed range will gain a 48V mild hybrid powertrain, while a plug-in hybrid version is also under consideration.

The Proceed will eventually be sold with a top-of-the-range GT variant. It’ll use the same running gear as the GT hatch, which itself will share components with its group sibling, the Hyundai i30N. However, the Kia cars are due with less power than the 247bhp Hyundai model, suggesting they could either use a detuned version of that car’s 2.0-litre four-pot or even feature a performance-oriented version of the Ceed's upcoming mild hybrid powertrain. As such, output is likely to remain close to 200bhp.

Inside, the latest Ceed models get an infotainment display of 5.0in or 7.0in in size, depending on the specification, or an 8.0in touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in top models. The Proceed is expected to stick to the same formula as its siblings, with the GT gaining sports seats and a sports steering wheel.

While the Proceed name has not yet been confirmed, Autocar understands that the positive reaction to the concept that bore the same name is encouraging its use instead of 'Fastback', which is what the smaller i30 model of a similar shape is called.

Following the Proceed’s arrival, a crossover version of the Ceed is due to complete the four-model line-up. That car will be a rival to the upcoming Ford Focus Active and is described by company insiders as being a “dynamic” offering engineered to be fun to drive like its range mates, despite an elevated ride. Since this will also be a five-door car, it means the new Ceed range will be without a three-door option for the first time — a move that reflects market demand, according to a spokesman.

Kia Ceed 2018 review

Should I buy one?

All of which leaves the Ceed where in the class? Comfortably near the top.

It gets the vehicle dynamics bit right, for which you and I should rejoice. And perhaps it’s mean to expect too much else from an excitement perspective: it’s not as if a Peugeot 308, or even the VW Golf or Ford Focus, is like stepping into a Swedish show home.

Anyway, there you go: used to be reasonably priced. Now reasonably very good indeed.

Looks very Alfa in some ways.

It doesn't look super sporty...but then neither does the GTI.

Looks like the ford focus and BMW 1 Series and the Alfa were at a swingers party and had this kid....

ford focus from the front, 1 Series from the back, Alfa from the side...

Or is it just me?

Ok fair enough, the same swingers party also produced the Stelvio. Happy? :D

Kia Ceed GT shooting brake due next year as new range topper

Hyundai N chassis guru Albert Biermann is leading the development of Kia’s hottest Ceed

Kia is developing a “more agile and playful” Ceed GT that will have some characteristics of the Hyundai i30N. It's to be launched in 2019, likely with the shooting brake bodystyle that has just been seen testing.

Kia's European marketing boss, Artur Martins, told Autocar earlier this year that the GT model will be tested by a team led by Albert Biermann, the chassis guru who headed development of the i30N. The car will be part-developed at the Nürburgring, where Kia parent company the Hyundai Motor Group has a permanent test centre.

"With Albert's involvement, you will see similar handling and balance, although not at that level [of performance],” Martins said. “It will be more fun than the old car, but it won't be as focused as the i30N.”

Although the rest of the Ceed range shares its engines with the Hyundai i30 line-up, those being petrol engines of between 1.0 and 1.4 litres and a 1.6-litre diesel, the hottest Ceed isn't guaranteed to use the N-division-tuned 2.0-litre petrol engine, which produces up to 271bhp in the i30N.

Group powertrain boss Michael Winkler told Autocar that while he can’t confirm what capacity the GT’s engine will be at this stage, the GT will not be “as extreme” as the i30N. This suggests it could use a detuned version of the 2.0-litre four-pot or even feature a performance-oriented version of the Ceed's upcoming 48V mild-hybrid powertrain. As such, power is likely to remain close to 200bhp.

While that would leave it trailing in the wake of hardcore hot hatches such as the 276bhp Renault Mégane RS and upcoming Ford Focus ST, which will have about the same output, it suggests the top Ceed will be engineered with a more forgiving personality than the hard-edged i30N. As such, it will have its sights set on the highly talented Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Expect this trend to continue into the car's design, ensuring a more restrained look than the i30N. A spotted test car is running with 18in wheels, a roof spoiler and new front grille to form the bulk of the GT's exterior parts. It's a shooting brake, a bodystyle which is yet to be revealed (and was previewed by last year's Proceed shooting brake concept), suggesting the GT model will be launched with the sleeker design.

The Ceed five-door hatchback is also due to be given a GT variant, while the Ceed SW could inherit the running gear to provide customers with the option of a hot estate.

The following Ceed SUV, however, could follow a slightly different path and be offered with GT-Line bodywork but not gain the more potent firepower. This is the route taken by its larger SUV sibling, the Sportage, which has a GT-Line variant as its top model but sticks with the standard range of engines.

Kia Ceed 1.4 T-GDi First Edition review

Should I buy one?

Depending on what else you’re considering, the Ceed should definitely be on your shortlist. Although it's not class-leading, it’s not far off the mark in many areas.

The ride is the car’s biggest major flaw; it’s not hot hatch-hard, but it’s bumpier than it should be and easily disturbed by ridges in the road. In a car with fewer and fewer faults each time it returns, that’s a conspicuous one.

With petrol now the mainstream option, rather than an alternative to diesel power, it has good points from both worlds: an ability to crunch miles in relative peace and quiet, as well as to return low running costs. Kia claims 48.7mpg on the WLTP test cycle, which was easily approached on our test route with little conscious effort to go easy on fuel.

Perhaps the ride is the inevitable trade-off for that confident handling. But several rivals with a greater number of stars after their name don’t ask you to choose between comfort and a decent drive.

First drive: Kia Proceed GT 2018 prototype 2018

No 3dr, no problem. Kia reinvents the Proceed sports hatch as a Shooting Brake elegant estate

This is the new Kia Proceed. It's what you get instead of a 3dr Ceed, which we can’t have any more because nobody buys 3dr hatchbacks. That’s the short of things.

So Kia has turned the Proceed into a slinky estate car instead, or shooting brake, if you like. Which Kia is making because shooting brakes are cool. Or will be.

How cool? Kia put a picture of a Reliant Scimitar and Volvo 1800ES up in the press conference to show what inspired it. They reckon it’s so swoon-worthy that by 2020, this body style, of four Ceeds in total (5dr hatch, wagon, and crossover comprise the others) will account for 20% of all Ceeds sold. The last 3dr was just 5%.

Technical details, then: it’s a Ceed, built in Slovakia on the same line as other Ceeds, with which it shares architecture, technical makeup, interior and wheelbase, but not body panels. Only the bonnet and wings are shared with the 5dr hatch, and the suspension, multi-link at the rear like all Ceeds, has been given its own tuning. It’s about the same weight as the estate, which is, curiously, around 20kg lighter than the hatch despite being longer.

Of the immediate and non-immediate premium rivals, Kia has identified only Mercedes-Benz as making a car of this size and type, the CLA Shooting Brake, and thinks most sell for a considerably higher price than its plainer hatchback variant. So the Proceed is only being offered in higher specifications – GT-Line and GT only – albeit with a full engine engine range, from 99bhp through to 201bhp petrols and 114bhp or 135bhp diesels. There’ll be 48v mild-hybrid petrol and diesels next year.

Kia’s other research has found that owners of cars like this don’t use their rear seats any more often than 5dr hatch owners, but they do use the boots a lot. So the Proceed has 40/20/40 one-touch split/fold rear seats and a fairly big 594-litre luggage volume with the rear seats in place – only 11 litres shy of a VW Golf estate’s – although here there’s a high load lip.

So far we’ve only driven a disguised Ceed, but by the time you read this they might have taken the wrappers off. If so, looks quite good, doesn’t it?

Thus far we’ve driven one Proceed variant, a GT, which means it has a 1.6 petrol making 201bhp and here driving through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, though you can have a six-speed manual.

It’s as premium as Proceeds get, then, right down to the optional Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rubber (225/40 R18) which I can’t imagine too many Proceed owners insisting on getting, or certainly replacing like-for-like down the line, regardless of how much Kia says it has worked on the Ceed’s ride and handling.

Which, to be fair, it has. I think the 5dr is among the three nicest cars in the class to drive and the Proceed isn’t so different to that. The ride’s flat, reasonably compliant, with only harsher potholes causing it any particular trouble. It steers pleasingly too: medium weighted, linearly responsive and with the ‘right’ amount of self-centering and torque build-up as you move away from straight. Kia hasn’t chased being too ‘shporty’ or too dynamic, it’s just a pleasingly judged compromise between comfort and control. That aspect of this late prototype car was finished.

Less finished, I think, was the powertrain. It’s fine, but feels like it needs more tweaking to smoothen the throttle
response. There’s a good amount of torque through the rev range, but a gravelly tone to engine note, which hardens and booms if you press the Sport mode: there’s a flap in the exhaust and a bit of electronic amplification.

The overly-sharp throttle response at that point makes steady-inputs difficult, and if you assume control of the gears yourself via the paddles, while shifts are quick, the car’s desperate to tell you what gear it thinks you should be in for maximum economy, but that overlays the display of the gear you’re actually in, unless you’re at full throttle or full lift-off; which is odd. There’s a bit of work to do still, then.

Ditto the interior, but only because of the un-textured surface of a few unfinished production tools on our test car. The Proceed’s interior is otherwise pretty good; sensibly laid out, with softer touch materials where you’d expect them. There’s no great amount of flair inside, but the driving position is good and despite the rakish roofline there’s decent space in the back, too.

Kia won’t announce prices for the Proceed until closer to its launch next spring, but it’s a fair bet it’ll be more expensive than the regular wagon. Which means you’re paying for what? It’s not space, it’s not economy, it’s not markedly different dynamics and it’s unlikely to be huge amounts more kit than more mundane models get.

Which means you’re paying for extra style. But who the hell would do that? See how many crossovers and pseudo SUVs there are and you get your answer. The sporting estate could be the next new niche.

Early verdict: As good to drive as regular Ceeds, with added space and style.

Four stars

Kia ProCeed

The all-new Kia ProCeed merges stunning design with the space and versatility of a tourer in a five-door shooting brake body. The ProCeed will make its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, before going on sale exclusively to European drivers at the beginning of 2019.

Emilio Herrera, Chief Operating Officer for Kia Motors Europe, comments: "The ProCeed is a car that represents everything Kia stands for. This beautiful shooting brake body offers drivers an unmatched combination of design, space and versatility, representing a unique proposition in the mid-size family car segment. Engineered on European roads, for European drivers, the ProCeed will be engaging to drive. Built in Europe, to the highest standards of production, it also offers owners the reassurance of Kia's unique 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty."

Carrying the name over from the second-generation Kia pro_cee'd three-door coupé, the Kia ProCeed has been designed, developed and engineered in Europe. A product of Kia's European design, product development and R&D teams in Frankfurt, Germany, the ProCeed will be manufactured at the brand's ilina production facility in Slovakia. It will be built alongside the Kia Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon, first introduced earlier this year.

Matching the daring design and engineering which renders it the sportiest iteration of the new Ceed model family, the Kia ProCeed will be available exclusively as a 'GT-Line' or high-performance GT model.

Herrera comments: "As part of the expanded Ceed model family, the Kia ProCeed will play a significant role in Kia's ongoing European growth. More than 1.3 million examples of the Ceed family have been sold in Europe since 2006, making it one of our best-selling models alongside the Sportage. The ProCeed widens the appeal of the Ceed range even further."

Production of the ProCeed shooting brake begins in November, and sales commence exclusively across Europe in the first quarter of 2019. It will be covered by Kia's quality promise, with the brand's industry-leading 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard.

Kia Ceed GT

The all-new Kia Ceed GT will be more accomplished and fun-to-drive than ever, and make its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, alongside the all-new ProCeed GT.

The original cee'd GT and pro_cee'd GT were launched in 2013, representing the first ever performance hatchbacks from a Korean brand. The Kia Ceed GT picks up where its predecessors left off, with an assured, engaging drive and a powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, as well as a comprehensive range of comfort, safety and convenience technologies.

For the first time in a performance hatchback from Kia, the Ceed GT will be available with an optional seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission, in addition to the standard six-speed manual gearbox.

Emilio Herrera, Chief Operating Officer for Kia Motors Europe, comments: "Our first GT models were important for Kia. They laid a blueprint for future performance cars from the brand, and proved there was a genuine appetite for faster and more engaging "drivers' cars" from Kia. The cee'd GT and pro_cee'd GT provided the impetus for cars such as the Stinger and Optima GT, and introduced a sporty design appeal that has inspired a range of popular GT Line models across our product line-up.

"The all-new Ceed GT occupies a unique position in the mid-size family car segment, and doesn't simply chase the highest top speed or fastest straight-line acceleration. It offers greater agility and grip on winding roads, maximum confidence and comfort at a cruise, and fast-revving turbocharged power perfectly matched to European tastes."

The Kia Ceed GT and ProCeed GT will enter production in November at Kia's ilina production facility in Slovakia, alongside the Ceed, ProCeed and Ceed Sportswagon.

Available exclusively to European drivers, sales will commence in the first quarter of 2019. The Kia Ceed GT will be covered by Kia's industry-leading 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard.

Powerful 1.6-litre T-GDi engine available with manual or Dual-Clutch Transmissions

When the first cee'd GT and pro_cee'd GT were revealed in 2013, they were powered by a newly-developed 1.6-litre T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) engine. Downsized, turbocharged and quick to respond to driver inputs across the rev range, the new engine came to define the car's effortless approach to power delivery in all conditions. The Kia Ceed GT retains this approach, with a 1.6-litre T-GDi engine that has been updated for the new model.

Producing 204 ps at a 6,000 rpm peak, the 1.6-litre T-GDi engine continues to provide effortless acceleration and easily-accessible torque. The engine's maximum torque of 265 Nm is available across a wide 1,500-to-4,500 rpm rev range. The result is an engine which delivers as much of its performance as possible across all driving conditions.

The Kia Ceed GT is paired with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. In response to customer demand across Europe, Kia's seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission is also available for the first time in the brand's performance hatch. Developed in-house, the double-clutch transmission further broadens the appeal of the Ceed GT, enabling quick-fire automatic gear shifts, or letting drivers take over with metal alloy steering wheel paddles.

New Kia Ceed GT revealed as 150 kW ‘performance hatch’

The new Kia Ceed GT has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, with the Korean automaker describing it as a “performance hatch” rather than a full-blown hot hatch.

Power comes from an updated version of the automaker’s 1,6-litre T-GDi petrol engine. In this application, the turbocharged four-pot produces 150 kW at a 6 000 r/min and 265 N.m from 1 500 through to 4 500 r/min. While it is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will also be offered.

The Ceed GT features an electronic sound generator that Kia says delivers a “characterful GT engine note” into the cabin. A sportier exhaust note has also been realised thanks to the adoption of exhaust flaps. Kia says acceleration statistics and emissions data will be released closer to the 2019 on-sale date.

In terms of styling, the Ceed GT sets itself apart from derivatives lower in the range by way of a new front bumper design, incorporating larger air intakes and gloss black trim along the base. The grille, meanwhile, gains a dark chrome surround and a “GT” logo, with the honeycomb pattern featuring red highlights.

Chunkier side sills are also included, along with 18-inch alloy wheels and red brake callipers. At 135 mm, the ride height is reduced by some 5 mm over other Ceed variants. A model-specific bumper at the rear complements that at the front, and houses a gloss-black rear diffuser plus more “GT” badging. A small roof spoiler is also included.

Inside, you’ll find a black roofliner, a D-shaped steering wheel (again, bearing the GT logo) and aluminium pedals. Sports seats are also included, trimmed in black leather and suede, and finished with red stitching.

The suspension system gains stiffer springs as well as softer anti-roll bars. In addition, the electronic stability control system has been “carefully retuned to offer keener drivers more freedom to exploit the increased agility” of the new model. The standard model’s 288 mm ventilated front disc brakes, meanwhile, have been replaced with 320 mm discs.

Will it come to South Africa? Well, when the standard Ceed was revealed back in February 2018, Kia Motors SA told us that it had plans to add the hatch to its local line-up. Whether that is still the case, and whether the Ceed GT would form part of those plans, remains to be seen (although, interestingly, the international media material states that the Ceed GT will be “sold exclusively in Europe”).

Kia Ceed GT-Line

The all-new Kia Ceed GT-Line made its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. The Ceed GT-Line takes design cues from the higher-powered Ceed GT model, and will go on-sale across Europe during the first quarter of 2019.

Strengthening the appeal of Kia's new mid-size family car range, the new Ceed GT-Line is available on every variant of the new Ceed, including the five-door hatchback and Ceed Sportswagon. The new shooting brake bodystyle of the ProCeed is sold as standard in 'GT-Line' specification. Drawing inspiration from Kia's new high-powered Ceed and ProCeed GT models, all three 'GT-Line' models offers a high level of versatility, turbocharged engines and engaging handling, topped with a sporty new look inside and out.

The Kia Ceed GT-Line is available with a choice of powertrains: Kia's 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) engines, or Kia's 1.6-litre 'Smartstream' CRDi (Common-Rail Direct injection) diesel engine. The downsized range of powertrains contribute to the car's agile handling characteristics.
