Should I buy one?

Even without the trick adaptive dampers and sportier suspension set up that differentiates the F-Sport from its regular rangemates, there’s still enough about this entry-level UX to warrant consideration. Its laid back, smooth demeanor helps mitigate the stress that can often accompany driving in built-up areas. That you won’t need to constantly raid your wallet in order to keep it fuelled is a further draw, while fleet managers will no doubt find its 23% BIK rating appealing.

Admittedly a Volvo XC40 is a more complete, well-rounded package, while the Audi Q3’s cabin offers even greater levels of premium appeal. But for those after something a little different, that’ll stand out from the rest of the compact SUV field, the Lexus UX is easy enough to recommend. That said, I’d still go for the F-Sport.

If you’re in your twenties or thirties, you just got that well-paying job, and you are looking for your first premium SUV purchase, you’re probably looking at something from Germany first.

Option would include the likes of BMW’s X1 and X2, Audi’s Q2 and Q3, and from Mercedes-Benz the GLA or GLC. Granted, Mercedes’ offerings are a bit dated compared to the others.

But if you’re one of those seeking individualism and something other than a German vehicle, then it would be wise to take a look at Lexus.

The Japanese automaker launched its brand new UX earlier this year in South Africa, and dubbed it the SUV for the city. In order for the UX to see to the needs of life in the city, it has to meet some important criteria.

Friendly to the environment?

The UX200 F-Sport uses the same engine as the UX200 EX. Power outputs remain the same on 126kW and 205Nm and drive is sent to the front wheels via 10-speed CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Lexus notes that fuel consumption for the petrol engine is rated at 6.1-litres/100km, which should translate to a range of 771km on its 47L fuel tank. Strangely, after barely covering 470km, the F-Sport had to be refuelled. Despite driving with as light a foot as possible, Lexus’ claim could not be met. Not even come close to it.

Apart thereof, the UX200 F-Sport has a very good ride quality - as you’d expect from one of Japan’s top luxury exports - and does the SUV tick the right boxes when it comes to premium driving. Four driving modes are on offer - Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport+) - and each one alters the SUV’s driving characteristics. An especially nice touch is how the information display in front of the driver changes in accordance with each mode. Interestingly, when one is in either Sport or Sport+, the gearbox only avails eight gears and not all ten.

Lexus to reveal first production EV at Chinese show

New machine, set to be electric version is UX crossover, to be shown on 22 November

Lexus will reveal its first series production electric car, which Autocar understands will be an electric version of the UX crossover, at the Guangzhou motor show in China later this month.

The Japanese firm hasn’t given any firm details of the machine ahead of the 22 November reveal, but says it is “specifically crafted to suit the needs of audiences in China and in Europe.” But the machine will be based on the electric Toyota C-HR, a sister crossover to the UX, that is currently offered in the Chinese market. The machine will likely be named the UX Electric.

Lexus UX 300e revealed as firm's first production EV

Electric version of crossover features 201bhp powertrain, due to reach UK in 2021

Lexus has revealed its first electric production car, the UX 300e, at the Guangzhou motor show in China, with the compact SUV due to go on sale in the UK in 2021.

The electric version of the regular UX crossover, understood to be based on the electric Toyota C-HR offered in China, features a front-mounted motor that produces 201bhp and 221lb ft. Power comes from a 54.3kWh under-floor battery offering a claimed range of around 250 miles and fast charging at speeds of up to 50kW.
