The latest “Sports Series” McLaren.

McLaren 600LT

The McLaren 600LT marks the beginning of the next chapter in the McLaren 'Longtail' (LT) story and at the same time sets a new sportscar benchmark as the fastest, most powerful and most track-focused - yet road legal - Sports Series McLaren has created.

"The McLaren 600LT is only the fourth 'Longtail' McLaren in more than two decades. The McLaren F1 GTR 'Longtail' that began the lineage was one of the purest race cars in modern motorsport history. The 675LT resurrected the revered name, creating the purest distillation of the sheer driving pleasure embodied by all McLaren cars. Now we are further extending our very special LT family -albeit in limited numbers - and once again showcasing the ethos of optimised aerodynamics, increased power, reduced weight, track-focused dynamics and enhanced driver engagement that are the hallmarks of a McLaren 'Longtail'." Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive

Inspired by the renowned McLaren 675LT and its iconic 'Longtail' racing predecessor, the McLaren 600LT is built to excel on roads and race circuits alike. The new addition to the LT family has all the physical hallmarks of a true McLaren 'Longtail', including a silhouette elongated by 74mm; it also has an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser and fixed rear wing. In total, more than 23% of parts (by number) are different on a standard McLaren 600LT compared to a McLaren 570S Coupé.

Extreme weight-saving measures were at the heart of the McLaren 600LT programme from its outset, with a reduction of 96kg against the DIN weight of a 570S Coupé targeted and achieved. Built using the lightweight carbon fibre monocoque chassis for which McLaren is renowned, the 600LT further benefits from new carbon fibre bodywork that lowers vehicle weight as well as optimising aerodynamic performance. Unique top-exit exhausts ensure that the new LT model has a distinct aesthetic appearance that identifies it as something particularly special, as well as delivering a substantial weight saving and an incredible aural experience.

To deliver the extreme performance appropriate for an LT, the McLaren 600LT is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-litre V8 engine that benefits from an uprated cooling system and reduced back pressure in an exhaust system that is even shorter and more extreme than that of the McLaren Senna. Peak power is 600PS (592bhp), with maximum torque of 620Nm (457lb ft) and the power-to-weight ratio of the McLaren 600LT at lightest dry weight is an astonishing 481PS/tonne.

Like its 675LT predecessors, each McLaren 600LT will be hand-assembled at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey. Available to order now from McLaren retailers - subject to availability - the McLaren 600LT Coupé is priced from £185,500 with taxes (UK), which includes a Pure McLaren Road Owner Track Day at a race circuit, with expert driving tuition.

Love a Longtail? Say hello to the new McLaren 600LT

Meet the new McLaren 600LT, which the Woking-based brand says “marks the beginning of the next chapter” in its Longtail story.

McLaren says production of the new 600LT will “strictly limited”, kicking off in October 2018 and lasting for around 12 months, with build slots scheduled around existing Sports and Super Series models, as well as the Senna, Senna GTR and BP23.

The British automaker says the 600LT is the “fastest, most powerful and most track-focused” (yet road legal) Sports Series model it has ever created. Based on the 570S Coupé, the new model is 74 mm longer, with an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser and fixed rear wing.

Power again comes from a twin-turbocharged 3,8-litre V8 engine that McLaren says benefits from an uprated cooling system and reduced back pressure in an exhaust system that is “even shorter and more extreme” than that of the Senna. Peak power comes in at 441 kW and maximum torque at 620 N.m, up from the 570S Coupé’s 419 kW and 600 N.m.

Weight-saving measures (including new carbon-fibre bodywork) see the 600LT tip the scales at 96 kg lighter than the 570S Coupé, while the brand says top-exit exhausts ensure that the new LT model has a “distinct aesthetic appearance that identifies it as something particularly special”.

Inside, McLaren describes the cabin as “minimalist” and “track-focused”, using the carbon-fibre racing seats first seen on the P1 along with plenty of Alcantara trim. Should you wish to shed further weight, McLaren offers a range of options (with every lightweight option fitted, the 600LT will come in dry at just 1 247 kg).

The new model furthermore features the forged aluminium double-wishbone suspension and lightweight braking system from the second-generation McLaren Super Series, along with bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres. Quicker steering, sharpened throttle and brake responses and “significantly firmer” engine mounts are also part of the package.

“The McLaren 600LT is only the fourth ‘Longtail’ McLaren in more than two decades. The McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ that began the lineage was one of the purest race cars in modern motorsport history,” said Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer at McLaren Automotive.

“The 675LT resurrected the revered name, creating the purest distillation of the sheer driving pleasure embodied by all McLaren cars. Now we are further extending our very special LT family – albeit in limited numbers – and once again showcasing the ethos of optimised aerodynamics, increased power, reduced weight, track-focused dynamics and enhanced driver engagement that are the hallmarks of a McLaren ‘Longtail’,” he added.

New McLaren 600 LT: Faster track-focused model announced

McLaren has taken the covers of a new model. It's called the McLaren 600LT and it's one very quick track-focused machine. Here are the details.

Mclaren is calling the new 600LT, "the fastest, most powerful and most track-focused road legal Sports Series McLaren." The LT stands for Longtail, an iconic name for McLaren and this new 600LT will be only the 4th model in more than 20 years. The original was the McLaren F1 GTR Longtail - lauded as one of the finest race cars ever.

This new McLaren 600LT is built for high performance on racetracks. Based on the 570S Coupe, the 600LT is 74 mm longer, features an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser and fixed rear wing. It has been on a diet too and has shed 96 kg. The aerodynamics have been reworked and there are unique top-exit exhausts, giving it a very special look. There's carbon fibre everywhere inside and out, and you can go to town with McLaren Special Operations (MSO) goodies to make it even lighter. The cabin is minimalist and features carbon fibre racing seats and lightweight Alcantara touches.

Under the engine bay lurks a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine which features an uprated cooling system and reworked exhaust system. Compared to the 570S upon its based, power is rated at 441 kW and 620 Nm, and thanks to its weight of 1 247 kg, it promises breathtaking acceleration. The 570S can only offer up 419 kW and 600 Nm. Claimed times are not given, but we'll be surprised if it doesn't go under 3 seconds to 100 kph.

The suspension and handling have been improved and there are forged aluminium double-wishbone suspension and lightweight brakes, track-focused Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres, quicker steering; sharpened responses from the throttle and brake pedals; significantly firmer engine mounts and much louder exhausts.

Production of the new McLaren 600LT will be limited and it kicks off in October 2018. It is priced from £185,500 with taxes (UK) and given South Africa's love for the brand, we wouldn't be surprised to see a few examples make their way here.

New McLaren 600LT is 441kW of pure sports-car

This is only the fourth McLaren model in more than two decades to carry the Longtail nameplate, reserved for the most performance-focused street-legal weapons in the Woking arsenal.

OK, it’s based on the 570S Coupé, but it’s 74mm longer overall thanks an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser and fixed rear wing. Almost one in four of the components on this car are different than those on the 570S and most, though not all, of the changes are about saving weight. With all the lightest options fitted, it’s 96 kilograms lighter than a standard 570S at just 1247kg dry - that’s a huge difference at this level of performance, where weight savings are commonly measured in grams.

It has new, more aerodynamic carbon-fibre body panels, and a special free-flow exhaust system, even shorter and more extreme than that of the McLaren Senna, that exits over the top of the rear subframe rather than under it and speaks to the world with distinctive authority.

Its voice is that of a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-litre V8 with an uprated cooling system and reduced back pressure that is quoted at 441kW and 620Nm; with every lightweight option fitted that gives it a power-to-weight ratio of 354kW per ton - about the same as a 600cc supersports motorcycle.

The interior is trimmed - if you can call it that - in carbon fibre and lightweight alcantara synthetic suede, including carbon-fibre racing seats borrowed from the iconic McLaren P1 - or you can opt for the even lighter seats from the Senna. Further weight-shedding options include a carbon-fibre roof and vented carbon-fibre front wings.

But this car is not only about the numbers - it’s also about the feel, about precise feedback and instant response, so it has the forged aluminium double-wishbone suspension and lightweight brakes from the second-generation Super Series, special track-focused Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres; quicker steering; sharpened responses from the throttle and brake pedals and significantly firmer engine mounts.

Without having seen one, let alone driven it, we would say this is not going to be a comfortable car. It will vibrate, it will jar you, the cabin will get noticeably warm when it’s driven the way it‘s meant to be driven, and you will probably be able to smell the hot engine oil after a dozen laps of your favourite racetrack. It will engage all your senses, unfiltered and at full volume - and it will probably be the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

McLaren hasn’t put a physical limit on the number of 600 LTs to be built - but because of the special carbon-fibre body panels it wears, it won’t be many. Production will start in October 2018 and go on for about 12 months, with build slots scheduled around existing Sports and Super Series models, as well as the rest of the already sold-out Senna, Senna GTR and BP23 production. A handful of those build slots have been allocated to South Africa, with indicative pricing starting around R5.5 million.

New McLaren 600LT: ‘extreme’ acceleration figures revealed

Towards the end of June 2018, McLaren revealed its latest Longtail model, the 600LT. Now the Woking-based automaker has shared the acceleration figures of what it bills as the “most extreme” road-legal Sports Series model ever.

Thanks to a recalibrated engine management system and less back pressure from that short top-exit exhaust system, the 3,8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 churns out 441 kW (at 7 500 r/min) and 620 N.m (between 5 500 and 6 500 r/min), up from the 570S Coupé’s 419 kW and 600 N.m.

The result is a claimed 0-100 km/h time of just 2,9 seconds, matching the acceleration of the 675LT Super Series model. A blast from zero to 200 km/h takes a claimed 8,2 seconds, before the 600LT tops out at 328 km/h. And the quarter-mile? Some 10,4 seconds.

McLaren says the new model’s unique bodywork “optimises aerodynamic performance”, working in conjunction with the flat carbon-fibre floor to produce 100 kg of downforce at 250 km/h.

The braking system comes from the Super Series, and features lightweight aluminium callipers and stiffer carbon-ceramic discs, reducing weight by 4 kg and working in conjunction with a new brake booster. The result is what McLaren calls “incredibly responsive and progressive pedal feel” and a 200km/h to standstill distance of 117 metres (that’s just a single metre more than a McLaren P1 can manage).

As previously reported, production of the new 600LT will “strictly limited”, kicking off in October 2018 and lasting for around 12 months, with build slots scheduled around existing Sports and Super Series models, as well as the Senna, Senna GTR and BP23.

McLaren 600LT 2018 review

Should I buy one?

If you’re in the market for a thrilling and memorable sub-£200,000 supercar, the 600LT should certainly be on your list. It should probably be at the top of that list, too, for it is incredibly engaging to drive at speed.

The leap from 650S to 675LT was a giant one, but from 570S to 600LT, McLaren has taken a small step. Nonetheless, it has made a five-star car even better.

McLaren won’t say how many it will build, but the 600LT will be in production for 12 months. Word on the street is you will have to move very quickly indeed if you want to secure one.

McLaren previews new limited-run LT performance model

Woking firm will reveal new car, likely to be Spider version of the 600LT, next week

McLaren Automotive has confirmed that it will reveal its fifth ‘Longtail’ model, which is likely to be a Spider version of the 600LT, next week.

The British firm will launch the new machine on Wednesday 16 January, although it has not revealed any details aside from a single image showing the extended tail and engine cover.

But with the new model following closely from the 600LT Coupe that was launched at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, it is set to be a Spider variant in the same way the original 675 LT Coupe was followed by a Spider version.

In a release, McLaren said the new car would “meet the exacting McLaren LT philosophy of increased power, reduced weight, optimised aerodynamics, track-focused dynamics and limited availability”. It added the new car would have a production run of just 12 months.

The new model will be the third to be launched under the British firm’s Track25 business plan.

The first of the McLaren LT models was the F1 GTR Longtail racing car from 1997, with the badge revived in 2015 for the limited-run 675LT Coupe.

McLaren 600LT Spider

McLaren Automotive today releases first images and details of the third new model in its £1.2bn Track25 business plan - the McLaren 600LT Spider. The fifth car to carry the Longtail name, the new convertible fully embodies the McLaren Longtail philosophy of increased power, reduced weight, optimised aerodynamics, track-focused dynamics and limited availability. In addition, it brings a new dimension of excitement over the 600LT Coupé, without compromise to the dynamic purity of the most performance-focused car in the Sports Series line-up: a retractable hardtop to give the choice of open-air driving.

"The McLaren 600LT Spider adds a new dimension of excitement to the most extreme model in the Sports Series family, while losing none of the Longtail focus. Taking full advantage of the strength of the carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis has ensured that the new Spider has dynamic abilities and performance on par with the 600LT Coupé, for a weight premium of just 50kg and with no additional structural strengthening required. In addition to our weight advantage over competitors, we have also retained the top-exit exhausts that debuted on the Coupé - and I'm pleased to report that they sound and look even better with the roof or rear window of the Spider lowered!" Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive

Like its 600LT Coupé sibling, the Spider records a significant weight saving over the model on which it is based, with McLaren's engineers achieving a reduction of 100kg at DIN weight over the 570S Spider. Furthermore, thanks to its lightweight but incredibly strong carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis, the convertible 600LT retains the structural rigidity of the Coupé with none of the strengthening that is usually required with conventional steel or aluminium structures. The result is a weight penalty of only 50kg over the Coupé, which contributes to a lightest dry weight of just 1,297kg for the Spider. This is at least 80kg less than any direct competitor and the equivalent power-to-weight ratio of 463PS-per-tonne underpins astonishing levels of performance and dynamic prowess.

McLaren 600LT Spider revealed: meet the fifth ‘Longtail’

McLaren has whipped the covers off the new 600LT Spider, which becomes the fifth car to carry the “Longtail” name.

The Woking-based firm claims the convertible 600LT retains the structural rigidity of the coupé with none of the strengthening that is usually required (thanks to its carbon-fibre MonoCell II chassis). The result, it says, is a weight penalty of “only 50 kg” over the coupé (contributing to a lightest dry weight of 1 297 kg for the Spider).

The three-piece, powered retractable hardtop can be lowered at speeds of up to 40 km/h. An electrically operated, glazed wind deflector can be activated independently of the hardtop, to reduce buffeting or increase ventilation – or, as McLaren puts it, “simply to allow more of the exhaust sound into the cabin”.

When lowered, the roof stows beneath a tonneau cover located behind the seats. With the roof raised, this tonneau storage area provides an additional 52 litres of luggage space.

As with the coupé, power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3,8-litre V8 engine, producing 441 kW and 620 N.m, and mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. McLaren says its new 600LT Spider will reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 2,9 seconds (the same as the coupé), with 200 km/h achieved in 8,4 seconds (just two-tenths seconds slower than the coupé). The maximum speed is 324 km/h with the roof raised and 315 km/h with it lowered.

Like the coupé, the firm says availability of the 600LT Spider will be “limited”, with build slots scheduled around other Sports and Super Series models. Each example will be hand-assembled in Woking.

“The McLaren 600LT Spider adds a new dimension of excitement to the most extreme model in the Sports Series family, while losing none of the Longtail focus,” said Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer at McLaren Automotive.

“Taking full advantage of the strength of the carbon-fibre MonoCell II chassis has ensured that the new Spider has dynamic abilities and performance on par with the 600LT coupé, for a weight premium of just 50 kg and with no additional structural strengthening required.

“In addition to our weight advantage over competitors, we have also retained the top-exit exhausts that debuted on the coupé – and I’m pleased to report that they sound and look even better with the roof or rear window of the Spider lowered.”

McLaren 600LT Spider Revealed

McLaren has dropped the top of its 600LT supercar and created the McLaren 600LT Spider. The newcomer is the 3rd new model in McLaren's £1.2bn Track25 business strategy and the 5th car to carry the Longtail name

McLaren Automotive has announced the arrival of the 600LT Spider and it's the 5th car to carry the Longtail name. The McLaren Longtail program focuses on increased power, reduced weight, optimised aerodynamics, track-focused dynamics and limited availability. Speaking of availability, McLaren says build slots scheduled around other Sports and Super Series models will be available and the car will be hand-assembled at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey, England.

The 600LT has been on a strict diet and the McLaren engineers managed to shave 100 kg off in comparison to the 570S Spider. Thanks to its strong carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis, the Spider has the same rigidity as its coupe sibling and is just 50 kg heavier. The roof setup is a 3-piece powered retractable hardtop and can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 40 kph.

The McLaren 600LT Spider is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 441 kW and 620 Nm, giving it enough shove to reach 100 kph in a claimed 2.9 seconds. 0-200 kph is dispatched in 8.4 seconds, making this one really quick convertible. Maximum speed comes in at 324 kph. Customers will be able to customise their 600 LT Spiders with a ton of options, including further weight-saving tricks like removing the audio and climate control systems. Seats from the McLaren Senna are also available.

A McLaren dealer in Cape Town estimated that the first 600LT Spiders will be arriving in July 2019.
