More of a surprise is that it's rewarding and, with the right spec, very nearly race-ready in its responses. Yet it'll comfortably take you off road, deal with the school run and cruise down to Chamonix.

Verdict

The Macan can be great, provided you choose the right drivetrain and trim. Skip the base four-cylinder engine. The Macan T is a great idea on paper, but its agility is let down by a weak engine. If Porsche had done us a solid and offered a different (or simply more powerful) engine in the T, it would be perfect. But it’s hard to justify a nearly $64,000 base price for a four-cylinder Macan that doesn’t have the sport-sedan magic of its siblings. Especially when the Macan S is just a few grand more. The S and specifically the Macan GTS are two of the best-driving sporty crossovers on the market. Porsche worked magic with what they achieved in terms of driving dynamics in the six-cylinder Macans. If every crossover felt like this, every car enthusiast would be a crossover fan.

Porsche Macan T 2022 UK review

The T costs just £1000 less than the V6-powered Macan S,
 a night-and-day upgrade in terms of power, performance and the way that it involves and excites you as a driver. It would be far better offered as
 an optional package on the base Macan, bundling together some of the desirable bits that would else be options, like BMWdoes with M Sport trim. But then does the T badge really hold much allure to Macan buyers?

As it is, the inevitable ‘just pay the extra grand and buy the Macan S’ statements will be fired the way
 of the Macan T, and fairly so.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“Still a hugely capable, desirable package that’s just starting to show its age in places”

It’s some feat indeed from Porsche to have taken an Audi Q5 box of bits all those years ago, worked its magic and created a car that, from 2014 into 2022 (and beyond) remains a real class act.

Rivals have their own small victories: the Alfa Stelvio is lighter on its feet, and the AMG GLC 63 sounds cooler while being caned. But as an all-rounder, a car for all tasks and occasions, Porsche’s effort is unsurpassed. Conversely it’s free of drama, too, but that’s likely what you want spending this sort of money on a family car.

Unless of course, you want an EV. Porsche doesn’t even offer a hybrid, and you may well be tempted by a Tesla Model Y or Ford Mustang Mach-E GT for similar money. The times are changing. But as Porsche’s next Macan will be a full EV sold alongside this version, you wouldn’t bet against Stuttgart having all bases covered for some time to come.

"... Now the company will take a wait-and-see approach to go EV-only with its best-selling model, Porsche told its U.S. retailers at a two-day meeting in the Canary Islands this week.

“They are going to review it,” a retailer at the meeting told Automotive News. “They will see how sales go in the next two years.”

Last year, the Macan accounted for a third of Porsche’s U.S. sales.

The dealer said the apprehension about going all-electric with the volume model concerns the lack of well-maintained public charging infrastructure.

“They got customer pushback,” he said. “They realized there are not enough chargers out there” to support the Macan customer base. ..."
