2019 Porsche Macan

Porsche Macan S 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

Bottom line: our feeling is that in its day-to-day performance, the Macan S could do with advertising its on-limit capabilities a little more. Just to whet the appetite.

Porsche Macan T

The Macan T has now been added to the successful Porsche model range. This is the first four-door sports car that will bear the special designation, which was previously the reserve of the 911 and 718 models. The letter T has represented a unique form of dynamic driving at Porsche since the 1960s. It stands for 'Touring' and identifies models that offer an especially authentic driving experience thanks to precise tuning, exclusive equipment and efficient engines. True to the spirit of the Porsche 911 T from 1968, the new Macan T features an incredibly dynamic set-up and a lightweight, two-litre turbo engine, combined with an athletic design and a range of standard equipment that is ideal for a sporty driving style. This concept positions the Macan T between the Macan and the Macan S.

Porsche Spices Up The Four-Cylinder Macan With New T Variant

The 2023 Macan T gets a lower and sportier suspension and unique styling cues

Since its introduction, Porsche’s Macan CUV has been the brand’s best seller all over the world. Sharing a platform with Volkswagen’s Tiguan and Audi’s Q5, the Macan manages to be sportier and more composed than either of its stablemates, and stands head and shoulders above anything else in the segment. If you want to buy a Porsche right now, the Macan is your least expensive entry into the market. Obviously it’s not a sports car, but it still has some of that brand cachet.

The standard model Macan delivers all-wheel drive and a 261-horsepower two-liter turbocharged four cylinder. Normally this is seen as a detriment, as it’s 114 horsepower down on the V6-powered Macan S. In the Macan T, which shares the same 2.0T as the standard model, Porsche is spinning that option as the lighter and more agile option. It gets 129 pounds off the front axle, don’t you know? So is this the modern-day equivalent of a 912, then?

With 261 horses and 295 lb-ft of torque on hand, the Macan T is hardly slow with a 5.8-second 0-60 run. That’s two tenths of a second quicker than the base model, as the standard Sport Chrono Package with an overboost “Sport Response Button” is added to the T as standard. As per usual, the all-wheel drive system, dubbed Porsche Traction Management, helps the Macan rocket out of the hole.

Is the sportier Porsche Macan T clever or pointless?

Porsche’s 261bhp entry-level SUV gets a bit less entry-level. But not by much

Porsche sold 88,362 Macans last year. That’s more than twice as many 911s Porsche shifted in 2021, even though the Macan is ancient. It’s still the best-selling Porsche and thus, there’s space for another one.

Meet the Porsche Macan T; a moniker traditionally stuck on its sports cars to denote ‘Touring’ but now applied to a small SUV. Hmm, what will the die-hard purists say?

It squeezes in between the entry-level Macan With No Suffix, and the Macan S. The GTS still heads up the range with its 2.9-litre turbo V6, whereas this T goes about its business with the same four-cylinder turbo you’ll find in a Golf R (and the No Suffix), albeit with a Porsche tune.

Indeed, Porsche tells us this engine alleviates 58.8kg of weight from the front axle versus the bigger V6, for sharper cornering. It’s not comically slow for a Porsche: 0-62mph takes 6.2s – 1.4s slower than the S, but 0.2 tenths quicker than the No Suffix – while top speed sits at 144mph.

Gains are made in the chassis. It’s 15mm lower than that entry-entry-level Macan, and sits on steel sprung suspension together with Porsche’s very good active suspension management system (PASM). The front anti-roll bars are stiffer, the traction control has been tweaked with a rear bias and there’s the option of adaptive air suspension and torque vectoring. So the T should be a lil' bit sportier than a boggo Macan.

There are a few visual clues for the Macan T. Things like a big badge that says ‘Macan T’, along with gloss black window trims and “sports” tailpipes, and metallic grey elements like the mirrors, side blades, roof spoiler and rear logos. Wheels come via the Macan S, mind: 20in dark titanium items.

New Porsche Macan T brings 261bhp and dynamic focus

Lower-range Macan T features a lightened front end, sporty suspension and a £53,970 price

The Porsche Macan SUV has gained a bespoke Touring specification that, the German firm says, delivers improved driving dynamics.

The Macan T is the first four- or five-door Porsche to feature this model designation and follows the Porsche 718 Cayman T coupé and Boxster T roadster.

It will sit between the Macan and Macan S in the line-up, with prices starting from £53,970.

The model is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 261bhp and 295lb ft of torque and mated to a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

The engine is 58kg lighter than the 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 used in the Macan S and Macan GTS. Porsche says this allows for sharper acceleration off the line and improves cornering thanks to an “ideal balance of weight and performance”.

Porsche expects the Macan T to appeal to keen drivers, helped by claimed improvements to the model’s driving dynamics thanks to its rear-biased four-wheel drive system and lowered, stiffened suspension.

The Macan T is also the first model to include as standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which is able to lower the body by 10mm.

Porsche Macan T (2022) Specs & Price

Porsche has slotted a new offering in between the entry-level and S derivatives of its updated executive SUV range. Although the new Macan T isn’t punchier than the entry-level 2.0-litre version, it comes with a lowered suspension, a distinctive exterior package and notably more standard specification.

The history books (okay, a Google search) will tell you that since the launch of the 911 T in 1968, Porsche has offered T variants in its 911 and, more recently, 718 models. The T (for Touring) “identifies models that offer an especially authentic driving experience thanks to precise tuning, exclusive equipment and efficient engines”, Porsche says.

Macan T price in South Africa

Porsche South Africa says that the Macan T (R1 190 000, which includes a 3 year/100 000 km Driveplan) is available for order now, with deliveries scheduled to begin in June 2022. The Macan T’s rivals include the Audi Q3 Sportback 45TFSI quattro S line, BMW X3 SDrive20i M Sport and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.0T Super Q4.

Porsche Macan T revealed, but what is it? Here’s where it fits in, and SA pricing

The ‘T’ designation is not something that you see a lot of in the modern Porsche line-up, but it has found its way onto various 718 and 911 models over the years, dating back as far as 1968. And soon you’ll be able to buy a Porsche Macan T.

Priced from R1 190 000, the Porsche Macan T slots between the base Macan, which is priced from R1 050 000, and the Macan S, which commands R1 271 000.

‘T’ stands for Touring, says Porsche, and it promises an “especially authentic driving experience” thanks to “precise tuning, exclusive equipment and efficient engines”. The emphasis here is very much on delivering a lightweight and agile package, which is why the Porsche Macan T is powered by the base Macan’s 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine.

Although there’s no extra ponies to speak of, with outputs remaining at 195kW and 400Nm, the Macan T does receive a specially tuned chassis with sports steel suspension that lowers the body by 15mm. The anti-roll bars on the front axle are now more rigid and Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive system has been specially adapted to provide a rear-wheel bias. Buyers can also opt for adaptive air suspension with PASM, which is now available for the first time in the four-cylinder models, but that might just defeat the object of this car.

Porsche Reveals Macan T With South African Pricing

Porsche customers and fans know what the T badge stands for and they will also know that it has only ever been given to the 718 and 911. Now, the German automaker’s first Touring SUV is here and we can call it the Macan T.

It stands for ‘Touring’ and identifies models that offer an especially authentic driving experience thanks to precise tuning, exclusive equipment and efficient engines. Following in the footsteps of its two-door predecessors, the new Macan T features an incredibly dynamic set-up paired with a lightweight, two-litre turbo engine, in addition to an athletic design and a range of standard equipment that is ideal for a sporty driving style. This concept positions the Macan T between the Macan and the Macan S.

Under the hood, you will find a two-litre four-pot delivering 261 hp (195 kW) and 400 Nm of torque. This is coupled with a fast-switching seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) and the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel-drive system. When fitted with the standard Sport Chrono Package including the mode switch and Sport Response button on the steering wheel, the Macan T accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 232 km/h.

The Macan T is available to order now with pricing from R1,190 000 including a 3 year/100 000 km Driveplan. First customer deliveries are expected from June 2022.

Porsche unveils the first-ever Macan T

The first-ever Macan T will join the lineup in Porsche’s model range with the first customer deliveries expected from June 2022.

Priced from R1 190 000, the compact 4-door SUV is powered by a 2,0 litre, four-cylinder turbo engine producing 195 kW and 400 N.m of torque. The Macan T accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,2 seconds and offers a top speed of 232 km/h when fitted with the standard Sport Chrono Package, including the mode switch and Sport Response buttons. As a result of a lighter and more compact powertrain, the Macan T weighs 58 kg less on its front axles than other models in the lineup such as the Macan S.

The drivetrain features a number of the German auto manufacturer’s signature management systems to improve and heighten the driving experience. It features a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) as well as the firm’s all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system that offers a wide spread of torque suited for a large variety of driving situations.

This vehicle is the only model in the lineup to have the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as a standard feature. The system seeks to optimize the Macan’s suspension to improve steering response and handling. As a result of the lightened load on the front axles, the vehicle has increased cornering ability with the PASM system having been adapted for this car, resulting in a greater bias to the rear wheels.

Porsche adds lightness - Macan T lands in SA soon with a surprisingly attractive price tag

  • 2022 Porsche Macan T is the first four-door model from the OEM to carry the 'T' badge.
  • Power is courtesy of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
  • Expect a heightened feel from the driver's seat thanks to honed suspension dynamics.
Surprisingly well priced

The Macan T touches town in South Africa in June 2022, and it's priced at R1 190 900, including a three-year or 100 000km Porsche Driveplan. It's by no stretch of the imagination an affordable car for most of us. However, Porsche sells more than a hundred, sometimes 200 hundred vehicles a month in SA, so it's bound to be a hit amongst the wealthy.

While it won't punch with some German competitors we recently tested, we think this Macan T package is perfect for drivers who enjoy the feel of driving rather than having big horsepower and torque numbers to brag about at braais. Let's unpack why the Macan T might be good for you.

Porsche Macan T 2022 review

Should I buy one?

Stuttgart’s brief was to give the firm’s best-seller added dynamic appeal, without upsetting the established order. I’d say the Macan T is mission accomplished.

Keen drivers already considering a four-cylinder Macan shouldn’t have to think too hard about stepping up to the T. It’s not as characterful as the Macan S, and the upgrades won’t make themselves obvious on the daily commute, but on the right road, it’s a more engaging steer than the entry-level offering.
