Porsche's smallest SUV will soon be updated once again before brand begins transition to fully electric model
Porsche is readying a second facelift for its six year-old Macan as the SUV's life is extended before a new, fully electric version arrives in 2022.
The updated version of the current petrol-powered model will be sold alongside the battery-powered version in a transitional period while sales of EVs continue their gradual growth globally, Autocar understands.
Thinly disguised prototypes of the facelifted model, seen testing alongside the current car in Germany, don't reveal extensive revisions. However, we're expecting tweaks to the front and rear bumpers and lights and a revised grille profile.
The changes could be more extensive inside, however. The Macan, which has been on sale since 2014 and was last substantially updated in 2018, still uses the button-heavy centre console and dashboard design that Porsche phased out with the new Panamera and Cayenne.
Expect that to be switched to the now more familiar touch-sensitive button panels and touchscreen-only infotainment. The newer steering wheel from the recently updated Panamera could be brought in, too.

Should I buy one?
At £58,816, it’s not exactly cheap, and being a Porsche, the options list is both extensive and expensive. PTV Plus, air suspension and the Sport Chrono Package are all things you’ll likely want, and you’ll have to pay an additional £2900 to get ’em. Spec a few more options such as adaptive cruise control and an extended leather and Alcantara interior, and you could easily add another £10,000 to that figure. Funnily enough, that’s about how much you’d need to upgrade to the range-topping Turbo.
But even if you take issue with the price, or with the performance SUV as a concept, it’s hard not to be impressed with the Macan GTS.
It’s comfortable when you want it to be, there’s plenty of space inside, the driving position is typically spot on, and the boot is very generously sized. You could quite happily drive it every day, all the while being quietly smug about the fact that you could use it to take apart a challenging stretch of road at the drop of a hat, and have quite a lot of fun in the process.
That’s by no means a bad sales pitch.

And it'll 'drive, look and feel like a Porsche'. Here's your first look
Porsche will launch its all-new all-electric Macan in 2023. Prototypes have begun testing on public roads. Before launch they’ll do two million miles. Michael Steiner, Porsche’s engineering director, has been telling TopGear.com about the car.
Of the styling, he says: “It will look like a typical Porsche and fulfil your expectations of an electric vehicle. It is a typical Macan but much more modern and sporting.”
The deliberate-leak shots show a car with a wedgy bonnet line, sitting lower than the headlamps. It can pull that 911-alike trick because there’s no engine underneath. The lamps themselves are shallow, like the Taycan’s. Like that shovel nose, a tapered fastback is obviously going to be good for aero.
Ignore the false chrome window line at the back. That’s just disguise. So are the fat rear bumper and – durr – fake exhaust tips.
We ask about specs, but he prefers to talk first in impressions. “It will drive like a Porsche. It will look like a Porsche, feel like a Porsche and it will have the soul of a Porsche.”
More specifically, he says: “It will have everything the current Macan has for performance technology and in addition high-end electric technology from the Taycan.” A helpful engineering drawing shows the four-wheel-drive and air springs. With low-mounted batteries, you’ve got to expect the E Macan is going to deliver in corners.
Steiner confirms it will use 800V electrics, as with the Taycan. This allows ultra-fast charging – more than the Taycan’s 270kW. It also means high levels of regenerative braking for better efficiency when speeds rise and fall. In other words when you’re driving it like a Porsche, not steady-speed cruising the highways.

Porsche has released the first official images of its upcoming electric Macan as the SUV begins testing on public roads for the first time.
Set for launch in 2023, the Macan EV will share its PPE architecture with the similarly sized Audi Q6 E-tron, and will be sold alongside the petrol-powered Macan, which itself is due to receive a mid-life facelift later this year.
By the time it arrives on the market as Porsche's second pure-EV, the electric Macan will have covered around three million kilometres (1.9 million miles) as part of its multi-environment testing programme, Porsche said.
Previously, development work on the new model has been centred predominantly around virtual simulations of its aerodynamic and powertrain-cooling properties, given the differing requirements of an EV compared to a combustion car.

As far as teaser campaigns go, Porsche is starting rather early with this one. The electric Porsche Macan is only due to hit world markets in 2023, but the German sports car specialist is already showing us pictures of it, albeit in disguised prototype form.
The Macan EV will not simply be a battery-powered version of the regular SUV that shares its name, it will be a whole new vehicle. But this electric Porsche Macan won’t replace its combustion-engined sibling, but rather serve as a parallel model, as Porsche is planning to launch a successor to the current Macan later in 2021.
Porsche is not releasing many technical details about the 2023 electric Macan just yet, but is promising that it will be the sportiest model in its segment.
According to executive board member Michael Steiner, Porsche is aiming for best-in-class performance figures and a decent long-distance range. The Porsche Taycan electric saloon currently offers a claimed range of up to 412 km, but with battery tech advancing so rapidly it’s certainly possible that this could be improved upon by the time the Macan EV hits the scene, although Porsche is not disclosing any range figures just yet.

New range-topping version of the facelifted SUV shows its hand in prototype formThere has been a lot of talk about the upcoming fully electric version of the Porsche Macan, which is set to arrive in the UK in 2023. Company officials have been dropping hints about it for well over a year now and we’ve recently received a series of photographs that expose prototypes of the new model.
But Porsche hasn’t been neglecting the existing petrol-engined Macans. Far from it, as we found out during a drive of a prototype facelifted Macan, a model now in its seventh year of production.
Seven years. For most car makers, this would represent a full generational cycle and high time for an all-new model. Not for Porsche, though. Sticking to an evolutionary approach it has followed for decades, it has reworked the Macan, giving it a freshened appearance, reworked interior, updated functions and revised petrol engines. The line-up has also been reduced in number.
When order books for the facelifted Macan open in the UK in July, there will be three models: Macan, Macan S and Macan GTS. The Macan Turbo has been axed, replaced in part by the Macan GTS, which, like all 2021 models, receives a lift in power.
The styling changes are mild. A new front bumper incorporates an air duct shape intended to accentuate width and trim elements within the lower part of the doors gain a different texture. At the rear, a new bumper has a more prominent diffuser. There’s also a revised range of wheels, including the 21in RS wheel on the Macan GTS prototype we’re in, and three new colours, details of which will be divulged at the end of July.

The manufacturer officially previewed the car in a series of testing images last month, but now with development work well underway, a pre-production prototype provides clues as to what to expect of the final car.
A raft of design tweaks mark the EV out from today's Macan; slimmed-down headlights are visible, alongside the lack of any physical grille, bar a lower air intake. The roofline also appears to be lower and more coupé-like than that of today’s Macan, while the rear end appears to have been subtly reconfigured.
Inside, the transformation is more readily apparent. With the arrival of all-electric power comes the removal of the conventional gearshifter, making way for a smoother, less cluttered centre console featuring a small rotary knob - presumably for controlling the large central infotainment screen - and a climate control touchscreen. Porsche's new-generation PCM 6.0 communications system will also feature, as, it appears, will a fully digital, curved gauge cluster.

Porsche has updated its Macan for a second time ahead of launching the largely unrelated new electric Macan next year.
The SUV has been treated to performance enhancements, styling tweaks and an entirely overhauled cabin to keep it fresh until the end of its life.
The standard Macan, the S and the GTS are now all more powerful than previously (the Turbo has been discontinued). The entry-level Macan keeps its 2.0-litre turbo four, but with a boost from 241bhp to 261bhp, while the Macan S has swapped its 3.0-litre V6 for a 2.9-litre V6 that pushes out 26bhp more, at 375bhp. Both also receive slight torque uplifts and therefore reductions in their 0-62mph sprint times.
Meanwhile, the Macan GTS has had its 2.9-litre V6 tuned to almost exactly match the output of the old Macan Turbo, at 434bhp and 405lb ft. Porsche says it can sprint from 0-62mph in 4.3sec and reach a top speed of 169mph.
As before, the GTS’s focus is on dynamic performance, so it gets torque vectoring, a 10mm suspension drop and stiffer air springs at each end in pursuit of quicker turn-in response and improved stability.
Subtle styling changes across the line-up, including a reshaped front grille, a revised rear diffuser, new standard- fit LED headlights and larger wheels (available in seven new designs) ranging from 19-21in, differentiate the updated Macan from the outgoing car.

SA pricing: Porsche Macan gets sharper look, more power for 2022
Porsche has given its Macan compact SUV a second facelift ahead of the arrival of the electric version in 2013, which will run alongside the combustion variants that you see here. Due in South Africa in January 2022, all three Porsche Macan derivatives receive a sharper look, revised cabin and more power.
Buyers can expect to pay R1 050 000 for the Macan, R1 271 00 for the Macan S and R1 551 000 for the GTS.
The entry model retains its four-cylinder turbocharged petrol heart, but the power output has been increased by 10 kW to 195 kW, making it 0,3 seconds faster from 0-100 km/h, which now takes place in 6,2s. But the real brawn in the range comes from the new Macan GTS derivative, which gains 44 kW to match the previous Turbo derivative’s 324 kW output. 0-100 now takes 4,3 seconds, which is a 0,4s improvement. There’s no word on whether there will be a new (and presumably more potent) version of the Macan Turbo, but for now the revised GTS model certainly seems to fill its shoes.
Inside the 2022 Porsche Macan you’ll find a new multifunction steering wheel as well as a redesigned centre console, on which the previous tactile buttons have been replaced by touch surfaces. The central command system is a 10,9-inch full HD touchscreen system, offering numerous online functions and services.
To match the new exterior colour options, Porsche is also offering a number of leather upholstery and contrasting seam packages in Payaya, Gentian Blue or Crayon.

Due in South Africa in January 2022, all three Porsche Macan derivatives receive a sharper look, revised cabin and more power.
