Toyota Aygo JBL Edition packs upgraded sound system

Special-edition city car gets 600W audio set-up claimed to create a “live gig feel”

Toyota has released a special edition of its Aygocity car that sports upgraded cabin speakers and a grey and orange exterior.

Called JBL Edition, this latest iteration of the Aygo focuses on "audio excellence", according to Toyota, and features the most powerful and sophisticated sound system yet in an Aygo.

The new set-up comprises two 225mm high-frequency tweeters installed on top of the Aygo’s instrument panel, two 150mm full-range speakers at the bottom of the doors and a 160mm subwoofer located in the car’s spare wheel well.

Channelled through a bus-less amplifier, the system offers a total of 600W of sound power. This is claimed to create a “live gig feel”, generating a “rock venue vibe or concert hall ambience”, depending on the user’s taste in music. Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity feature, too.

Located near Nice on the French Côte d'Azur, ED² is Toyota's European Design studio. For most of the 21st century, Toyota has been a leader in the A-segment in Europe. Committed to the future of this segment, it tasked ED² with the challenge of bringing its European vision of the segment to life. The demand was to look at it with fresh eyes. To define and imagine what the A-segment could be for European customers by fulfilling their needs and their desires. And, to prove that cars that have traditionally been called "entry point" can still lead with stand-out design.

New 2022 Toyota Aygo reinvented as rugged compact crossover

Preview of upcoming petrol-only city car features dramatic styling and off-road elements

The Toyota Aygo has been reborn as a rugged compact crossover designed to "reinvent the A-segment".

Previewed by the Aygo X Prologue concept ahead of an expected market launch before mid-2022, the successor to the hugely successful city car has been designed, Toyota says, to "prove that cars traditionally referred to as an entry point can still deliver standout design".

Despite the raised ride height, 19in wheels and heavily flared arches (aspects that will likely be toned down for the production car), the influence of the existing Aygo is clear in its upright rear light clusters, glass bootlid, two-tone paint scheme and wheels pushed right out to the corners.

Off-road-inspired design cues include contrasting skidplates at the front and rear, chunky raised roof rails and distinctive hexagonal foglights. Uniquely, the concept also features "action cameras" mounted in its door mirrors for "capturing and sharing special moments of exploration," while a pop-out bike holder is integrated into the rear bumper.

New Toyota Aygo X concept previews next-gen A-segment car

Toyota in Europe has whipped the covers off its new Aygo X Prologue, a jacked-up concept vehicle that likely previews the firm’s next-generation A-segment contender.

Conceived by Toyota’s European Design studio, the Aygo X Prologue has been handed what the firm terms a fresh “mischievousness” and “edginess”.

Toyota describes the concept as a “bold illustration of just how much attitude a small car can have” as it “reimagines how the A-segment could be spiced up”. Reports have suggested the replacement for the current Aygo (no longer offered in South Africa what with the arrival of the Agya) will debut in Europe as early as 2022.

Toyota Aygo successor spied winter testing

As-yet-unnamed city car spied testing as Toyota puts Yaris-derived underpinnings through paces

The successor to the Toyota Aygo has been spotted cold-weather testing near the Arctic Circle.

Few clues can be drawn from the entirely camouflaged body, but the spy shots suggest that the next-generation city car will draw its styling from the Yaris supermini while retaining some of the Aygo’s familiar characteristics.

The entry-level model will be brought into line with its strong-selling supermini sibling with swollen rear wheel arches and a sizeable front grille, but Aygo trademarks including a retractable fabric roof, upright brake light clusters and wheels pushed right into the corners of the body will be carried over.

Next-generation Toyota Aygo to be reintroduced as a small crossover

The next-generation Toyota Aygo is due for a release now that the current generation model is nearing the end of its seven-year life-cycle. While not all too successful in South Africa, the Aygo has been massively popular in the European market. Within its segment, the micro Japanese hatch is the third best-selling competitor.

According to Automotive News Europe, the Japanese brand may want to capitalise on this success by making the next-generation Toyota Aygo a small crossover. Although this is akin to the Fiat Panda and Suzuki Ignis, European regional CEO Matthew Harrison describes this as a “new A segment vehicle.”

What we can expect to see for the next-generation Toyota Aygo is a product that falls in line with the Aygo X Prologue concept that was revealed in March this year. This design study proposed a higher ground clearance than the current product but it would still be lower than the two aforementioned competitors.

Like the current Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross, the next-generation Toyota Aygo will be based off the GA-B flatplan of the TNGA platform. We can expect to see a production ready example within the coming months.

Production will start by the end of this year in Kolin, Harrison added. The Kolin plant is also going to start assembling the Yaris, which is currently built at Valenciennes, northern France.
