2019 Volvo S60

All-new Volvo S60 Revealed and It's Coming to SA

Volvo has revealed an all-new S60 as well as a new factory in the United States. The S60 has also been confirmed for South Africa. Here's what you need to know about the new sexy Swede.
Volvo has built a car factory in Charleston, South Carolina and the new S60 is the first vehicles to roll off the line. This new S60 is the first Volvo to be assembled in the US and it shows that the Swedes are keen to grab a slice of the sedan market out West.

"The new S60 is one of the most exciting cars we've ever made," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. "It is a true driver's car that gives us a strong position in the US and China sedan markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars."

This new Volvo S60 is unique for one main reason. It's the first Volvo to be sold without a diesel engine, showing that the brand is keen to press on with its electrical plans for the future. Assembled on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which forms the basis of many of the brand's products (XC90, S90 and XC60 to name a few), the new S60 continues the tradition of Volvo products being some of the safest vehicles on the road. There's plenty of semi-autonomous technology which will intervene if the driver doesn't react fast enough.

Volvo South Africa has expressed interest in bringing the new S60 here. When it comes in 2019, the new Volvo S60 will be offered with two turbocharged petrol engines (T4 and T5) as well as the super-and turbocharged T6 model. The T8 Twin Engine is being looked at and is under consideration. For the performance fans, there will be an S60 with a handling upgrade it calls 'Polestar Engineered', which introduces sportier wheels, uprated brakes, sportier suspension as well as a tweak to the engine's power unit, resulting in a power increase to 305 kW. We hope that Volvo SA greenlights this model!

We'll have more details and specification for the SA market closer to the launch.

Take a closer look at the Volvo S60 T8 Polestar Engineered

Now that Volvo Cars has unwrapped its third-generation S60 sedan, we can take a closer look at what will serve as the flagship model in the new range, the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered.

As previously reported, this derivative will be positioned above the R-Design derivatives, with tweaks to the turbocharged and supercharged 2,0-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain’s control unit hiking peak outputs to 305 kW and 670 N.m. Furthermore, Volvo claims an improvement in fuel consumption.

On paper, that should see the Polestar-fettled, all-wheel-drive S60 outpunch the likes of the Audi S4, BMW 340i and Mercedes-AMG C43, with an expected 0-100 km/h time of around 4,5 seconds. Not bad, right?

But perhaps more interesting are the alterations that Polestar will make to the vehicle’s wheels, brakes and suspension. Indeed, the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered upgrade will include new lightweight alloys (framing gold-painted brake callipers), Brembo mono-block brake callipers (with uprated pads and discs) and Öhlins shock absorbers with dual-flow valves.

Polestar emblems, black-chrome tailpipes and gold-coloured seat belts will furthermore serve to identify the flagship variant.

While Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that the S60 will be launched locally at some point in 2019 in T4, T5 and T6 guises, the local arm of the Swedish automaker says the T8 Twin Engine as well as the Polestar Engineered upgrade are still “under consideration”. Here’s hoping at least a few examples make their way to SA…

Volvo Sells Out Polestar Engineered S60 In Just 39 Minutes In USA

We often hear about special cars being sold out prior to their official launch but what Volvo’s Polestar Engineered S60 has done in the USA is mind boggling. In just 39 minutes after the Swedish automaker announced the pricing in the U.S for S60 flagship model, orders were placed for all 20 models that were headed for the market.

The Polestar Engineered Volvo S60 offers charming looks and with a combined power output of 415 hp (309 kW) and 669 Nm, it has the performance to back it up. It’s also equipped with an upgraded suspension and bigger brakes over the standard S60 models. And American buyers had so much confidence in it that they paid $500 deposits on Volvo’s Care app to reserve their unit of the 20 Polestar Engineered sedans headed for the U.S.

Those who weren’t paying attention within the first 40 minutes of Volvo’s announcement needn’t be too worried – because the company was also taken by surprise by what they say was an “overwhelming response,” there will be a complimentary Polestar Engineered software tuning option for buyers of the next 200 R-Design models ordered via the Care by Volvo app.

The software performance tuning may be a bit light, but it promises to improve throttle response, ferocity of gearshifts as well as the gearing itself to name a few. Thanks to the software performance upgrade, buyers will end up having to deal with 400 hp (298 kW) which should be enough compensation for missing out on the range-topping model.

At the lower end of the fiscal food chain customers can opt for the T5 trim which is yours for a starting price of just $35,800. This entry-level model is good for 250 hp (186 kW) and uses a modest front-wheel drive setup. The T6 Inscription model on the other hand will cost you $63,990 in full spec; this makes it the most expensive choice of the S60, save for the Polestar Engineered model. It also shares the same T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain as the R-Design that produces nearly 400 hp (287 kW).

Volvo S60 Twin-Engine T8 Polestar Engineered 2018 review

Should I buy one?

So exactly how good is the S60? The T8 Polestar Engineered won’t arrive in the UK until mid-2019 and when it does it’ll cost between £50,000 and £55,000. Depending on how you look at it, that’s rather a lot for an overweight, under-engined performance saloon or absolutely fair cop for a broad-batted plug-in hybrid that’s enviably refined, satisfying to drive and distinctive in a way an Audi A4 never will be.

Were the powertrain as inspiring to exercise as the bodywork is to behold and the handling more expressive, this car would be knocking on the door of five stars. As it is, the T8 Polestar Engineered sits comfortably among the ranks of its German peers and deserves to be regarded as more than a curio. In fact Audi, BMW and Mercedes could all learn a thing or two from Volvo about fusing comfort with control. Design, too. Not a bad mix of talents, is it?

Volvo S60 T5 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

I’d have one of these over an Audi A4 or Mercedes C-Class and pretty much all conventional large family saloons. I think a BMW 3 Series’ superior ride and handling would sway me, but I’m not sure the handling of an Alfa Romeo Giulia or Jaguar XE or Kia Stinger would be enough to make me ignore just how nice the Volvo is inside.

With the consistent blurring of different segments and such a prolific number of cars on sale, there have never been so many different choices. Pick a large family saloon or premium compact exec or even a crossover and you’ve got, what, 20 or more different cars to choose from? Doesn’t matter how many, really. The S60 is among the best of them.

Volvo S60 gains 385bhp plug-in hybrid option in UK

Executive saloon is now available in PHEV form, while prices have been increased at the bottom of the line-up

Volvo has extended its S60 line-up in the UK with the addition of a 385bhp plug-in hybrid option and raised the prices of cheaper models.

The BMW 3 Series-rivalling saloon can now be equipped with the four-wheel-drive T8 Twin Engine powetrain, which combines a 299bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an 86bhp electric motor for a combined output of 385bhp and 472lb ft.

In this configuration, the S60 officially offers 36 miles of electric-only range, emits just 39g/km of CO2 and is capable of 176.5mpg combined on the WLTP test cycle.

The S60 T8 Twin Engine is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 4.6sec. The less potent T5 petrol model needs almost two seconds more to complete the same sprint.

The enhanced performance and efficiency commands a substantial premium over T5 models, with the T8 R-Design Plus available from £49,805. Business-in-kind tax rates for the new powertrain, however, are less than half those of petrol-only variants.
