Forbidden fruit: VW reveals new Jetta GLI with GTI vibes

VeeDub fans who were around in the late 1980s will remember with some fondness a certain sedan called the Jetta CLI 16V, which was essentially a Golf GTI with a boot.

The CLI’s appeal faded however, when the third-generation of the early ‘90s only offered only an eight-valve option and the badge disappeared altogether after that, although we still got some hot Jettas in the form of the VR6 and the later 2.0T models.

Americans, on the other hand, have always had a hot Jetta, similar to our CLI in spirit, and called the GLI. It never went away and now there’s a brand new version. However, as with rest of the left-hand-drive-only, seventh-generation Jetta line-up, the new GLI won’t be coming to South Africa.

If you can handle the FOMO, let’s take a look at what we’re missing.

For starters the new GLI is powered by the same EA888 2-litre turbopetrol engine that motivates the Golf GTI, with 170kW and 350Nm on command. Drive is of course to the front wheels only and buyers can choose between a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission.

The GLI also gets its braking system from the GTI, as well as its torque-sensing limited slip differential and lowered sports suspension, while the 35th Anniversary edition gets an adaptive damping system that improves the ride quality when it’s not play time.

Distinguishing the GLI from humbler Jettas are unique front and rear bumpers as well as a honeycomb grille with GLI badging and a red accent line, a rear spoiler, chrome-tipped dual exhaust system and unique 18-inch alloys. That aforementioned Anniversary edition also gets black wheels with a red stripe, as well as black treatment for the mirror caps, roof and spoiler.

All Jetta GLI’s get a black interior colour scheme with red accents and stitching througout as well as ‘Diamond Flag’ decor trim and a 10-colour ambient lighting system.

Volkswagen Jetta R on the way? VW exec won’t rule it out

Earlier in February 2019, Volkswagen unveiled its new Jetta GLI at the Chicago Auto Show, with the fresh performance derivative sitting atop the new seventh-generation line-up in the United States. But now a high-ranking VW executive refuses to rule out the possibility of a Jetta R being added at a later stage.

“Never say never,” Derrick Hatami, vice president of sales and marketing for Volkswagen of America, told Motor Trend when asked about the chances of a Jetta R reaching production.

Hatami admitted the new GLI could end up cannibalising GTI sales in North America, but said he saw potential for more volume from the sedan than the hatchback. If that indeed turns out to be the case, offering a Jetta R would certainly make sense.

Of course, if the Jetta were to receive the “R” badge, it’d be another high-performance model not available to South Africans. Why? Well, as CARmag.co.za reported late in 2017, the latest-generation Jetta – which moves to the brand’s MQB platform – is not destined for local shores since there are no plans to build it in right-hand drive.

VW also recently confirmed the T-Roc R for production, but this model is likewise not expected in South Africa since the standard version is not on the cards for SA (instead, we’ll receive the new, smaller T-Cross).

For the record, the Jetta GLI uses the Wolfsburg-based firm’s familiar turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which sends a GTI-flavoured 170 kW and 350 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed manual transmission (a seven-speed DSG is offered as an option). A limited-slip differential is also included.

Thanks to its sport suspension, the Jetta GLI sits some 15 mm lower to the ground than the standard model. Standard LED projector headlamps flank a black honeycomb grille with a red accent line, while brakes from the Golf R (complete with red-painted callipers) are framed by new 18-inch alloys. At the rear, standard LED taillamps are joined by a new spoiler and model-specific rear bumper complete with finned diffusor and chrome dual exhaust tips.

Not sold on this. feels a bit generic. even by VW standards. Should have made a smaller version of the Arteon
 
The Cheapest 2019 Jetta Is Better Than the Fastest Jetta

We’ve reviewed the current Jetta plenty here, in both GLI and the other configurations. The upshot of all of this is that I think if you’re looking for a good, fun, usable, everyday, general-purpose sedan, I think it makes sense to give VW your money for one.

Just don’t give them too much of your money, because you’ll be happier with the base model and six grand in your pocket to spend on all sorts of other things. Maybe even other cars.

VW unveils seven fresh concepts: Golf R, Jetta GLI and more…

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The North American arm of the Volkswagen brand has unveiled its “enthusiast concept vehicle fleet” for 2019, including tweaked versions of the Golf R, Jetta GLI and Arteon R-Line.

The vehicles, which VW describes as “specially prepared concepts” sporting “performance add-ons and visual enhancements”, were on display at the SoWo: European Experience on Hutchinson Island, Savannah.

Volkswagen Jetta GLI Super Touring concept

The German firm collaborated with Fifteen52 to create the Super Touring concept. Based on a 2019 Jetta GLI Autobahn, the concept is the reveal vehicle for a fresh set of Fifteen52 wheels. Additional equipment includes K&W Variant 3 DDC coilovers, a sport spoiler, a brake kit, an extended exhaust and tinted windows.

1989 Mk2 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Trophy 16V sells for R580 000!

A pristine low-mileage second-generation Volkswagen Jetta has sold for the equivalent of six figures in Ontario, Canada.

That may seem like a rather lofty sum for a Jetta, but this particular derivative, badged as the GLI Trophy 16V, was limited to just 500 units when it was sold in 1989. And, of course, it has just 21 000 km on the clock.

First sold by Auto Hamer Inc. of Montreal, Quebec, this Jetta sports the standard 1,8-litre, four-cylinder 16-valve engine, comprising a cast-iron block, an aluminium cylinder head, hydraulic lifters and Bosch KEJetronic port fuel injection. This gave it a power output of 95 kW and 168 N.m of torque when it left the assembly line some three decades ago. Power is sent to the front axle via a five-speed manual gearbox.
