2020 Audi A3 (4th Generation)

I like that the design is still similar to the current model, so as not to devalue those.

Audi A3 facelift revealed with sharper design and cheeky subscriptions

The Audi A3 has been given a midlife makeover, and apart from the usual stuff, like a sharpened exterior and new interior equipment, it ushers in a curious new subscription service allowing owners to rent equipment already fitted to their car.

It’s not clear whether this new “functions on demand” system will be offered in South Africa. But in the UK owners will be able to activate features like adaptive cruise assist and high-beam assist for a certain period of time, such as a month, a year, three years or permanently, using the myAudi app.

Audi says this provides flexibility, for instance, if you only need cruise assist on your annual holiday once a year. But it begs the question - if the hardware enabling these features is already fitted to the car which you purchased, why should you have to pay for it twice?

Audi S3 Sportback

With a host of new features, the Audi S3 is more than just a product upgrade: Increased output, a torque splitter, and other technology highlights ensure strong performance and agile handling. Visually, the compact model reflects its increased dynamics with an expressive front design, a sporty diffuser, and a four-pipe performance exhaust system. The Audi S3 will be available at dealerships as a Sportback and as a sedan in the second quarter of 2024. Price: from 55,600 euro.

More performance: 2.0 TFSI with 333 PS

With 245 kW (333 PS) and 420 Nm of torque, the S3 is more powerful than ever. As part of the product upgrade, the 2.0 TFSI receives an increase in output of 23 PS and 20 Nm more torque. The result is confident pulling power and strong acceleration. The S3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds. Maximum torque is available in a wide rev range between 2,100 and 5,500 rpm. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). The engine and transmission also receive a sportier tuning: When at a steady speed and at low to medium acceleration in the part-load range, the preloaded turbocharger keeps at a constant rpm. In combination with the throttle valve, which is opened during overrun mode, this improves performance. The seven-speed S tronic now enables a more spontaneous take off, thanks to higher starting torque. This is achieved by compressing the clutch pack of the respective clutch more strongly. In addition, the shift time for gearshifts under full load has been halved and engine speeds are increased under partial load when the transmission is set to D which results in very good responsiveness.

The drifty new Audi S3 is here, and it’s the most powerful one ever built

Official pics and details of your new rear-view mirror ornament have been released. Broadly: it real fast

This is the most powerful Audi S3 ever built, but crucially, it’s also the driftiest Audi S3 ever built. Welcome to either a) your new not-so-undercover-anymore time travel machine, or b) an unwelcome, possibly permanent presence in your rear-view mirror.

To point a), then. Since before Early Man first trundled out of that cave, S3s have been heroically competent: desirable machines able to compress time and space in easily digestible premium suits. That remained the case right up until now, because now the staid, sensible S3 has been given the RS3’s ‘torque splitter’ technology.

In AudiSpeak, it enables “fully variable torque distribution between the rear wheels”, using an “electronically controlled multiple disk clutch on each driveshaft to optimally distribute the torque between the rear wheel on the inside and the outside of the curve”.

Having owned an A3 for 2 years now, I can tell you it is cheap feeling inside. They saved pennies on plastics and switches to make up for the Emissions fine. Even the window switches feel cheap and plasticky, way worse than on my previous VW. They also saved on sound insulation - it is very noisy on the road and you can hear the rear tyres booming through the floor like a delivery van!

The gearbox is also terrible - feels like an old CVT or ancient slush box. They really should have put in a DSG.

The 1.4 engine is strong though, and quiet and efficient.

I'm not in that bracket to purchase a new audi but from the older ones I have I can tell you the quality dropped in 2008. Look their interiors have always been top notch and they have a lot of wiggle room to play with to cut costs.its no Hyundai.

Old audi used to be proper audi from the a6 upwards ,quality materials all round high standard spec. A4 was alot of optional and the materials inside were good with slightly lower quality from below the armrest downwards sort of the stuff you don't touch.the a3 was quality materials on what you touch lower down was hard plastics.

My newer audi Q5 has hard scratchy plastics below the arm rest downwards like the a3's used to be.no carpeting in the door pockets only a rubber insert so everything you put in there makes a noise. I don't mind on a Q5 it's ment to get dirty so it makes it easier to clean but a new S8 I sat in is the same. Not impressed by that

Can only imagine how bad the a3 has become.

It's the age old story of distract everyone with new tech and looks and they wont see the quality drop

Audi S3 gets fresh look, more power and sharper chassis for 2024

Audi has ripped the covers off the upgraded S3 Sedan and Sportback models, but calling this a facelift is perhaps an injustice, given the engine and chassis upgrades.

Following hot on the heels of the regular A3 models, whose facelift was revealed back in march, the new S3 gains a more powerful version of the ubiquitous ‘EA888’ 2-litre turbopetrol engine.

Audi S3 buyers can now look forward to outputs of 245kW and 420Nm, which is 17kW and 20Nm more than the outgoing version, and enough to cut the zero to 100km/h sprint time by 0.2 seconds, with Audi now claiming a time of 4.7 seconds.

But before you get too excited about the new deputy performance model - an updated RS3 is surely on the way - keep in mind that the South African-spec Audi S3 is likely to be detuned.
