New Audi RS6 Avant: 600bhp estate confirmed for September launch

Audi's latest RS estate will take on the Mercedes E63 S estate with similar performance

Audi is set to launch an all-new and more powerful RS6 Avant, and has invited members of the Audi Sport Drivers Club to an exclusive viewing on 5 September prior to its public unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show.

An accompanying image shows the performance estate's rear, highlighting details of the brake light design that were not obvious on disguised prototypes recently seen lapping the Nürburgring.

Spyshots reveal that the wider body of the recently launched A6 Avant won't swell as much as the outgoing car, but chunkier wheelarches still feature alongside the trademark growth in air intake and wheel size.

Like its bigger brother, the RS6 will pack a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol unit, as used by the Porsche Panamera Turbo and Lamborghini Urus, to offer around 605bhp. That’s the same power output quoted for the limited-volume RS6 Avant Performance and 43bhp more than the previous regular RS6. The new engine is also said to deliver an extra 37lb ft, at 590lb ft.

By comparison, the M5 offers 600bhp and 553lb ft, and the most powerful version of the E63, the S, delivers 604bhp and 627lb ft.

Drive for the RS6 will be sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox and traditional Torsen torque-sensing quattro system. It will be built alongside the technically related RS7 at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant in Germany.

They're common here in the UK (Audi RS avants/estates) but don't recall seeing many in SA.

We have about three hours to go before the big Audi debut announced by Audi USA. And it really is the all-new RS6 Avant, not the RS Q8 we saw earlier, though that's probably coming next month.

Imagine that: a hot Audi Avant coming out in America and possibly going on sale there. We're keeping our fingers crossed for this one. And since we probably have the full photo gallery which Audi will release after the stock markets close, let's see if this is worth investing in.

Design-wise, this is one epic machine, clearly the best wagon design in the world right now. Sorry Porsche and AMG! Since we've been looking at prototypes for over a year, we immediately know what's been changed over the standard A6 and S6.

At the front, honeycomb mesh bulges out from the Singleframe grille, while a narrow slit has been cut over the top (probably not functional). The side intakes are much bigger and shaped like a triangle, while the chin splitter and other aero blades are a brushed silver color that goes nicely with this satin paint finish. That's one expensive-looking Audi!

Frech wheel designs, back by performance ceramic brakes fill much winder fenders. The rear is, oddly, one of the least appealing angles, as you can tell the large black grille is fake. But the RS6 should make up for this with a fantastic V8 soundtrack which is accompanied by an optional Audi Sport exhaust system.

The interior changes are quite subtle - a D-shaped steering wheel, some carbon for the console and honeycomb quilting on what looks like the S line seats. There's nothing to set it apart, like the little displays in AMG wheels and BMW's M shifter or red shifters. Still, it's an amazing cabin with probably the best screens right now.

Power is still a mystery, keeping us on the edge of our seats. The 4-liter V8 should be a mild hybrid with anywhere between 550 and 650 HP. Place your bets!

Wicked wagon! New Audi RS6 Avant revealed with 441 kW

Audi has whipped the covers off its new RS6 Avant, with Ingolstadt's super-wagon employing a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine churning out a whopping 441 kW.

The TFSI mill in fourth-generation RS6 Avant furthermore offers 800 N.m, which is on tap from 2 050 to 4 500 r/min. That’s enough for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,6 seconds, with the speedometer reading 200 km/h in a claimed 12 seconds. Top speed, meanwhile, is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Interestingly, the new RS6 also features a mild-hybrid system incorporating a belt alternator starter and a 48 V main electrical arrangement. The Ingolstadt-based firm says up to 12 kW can be recovered during light deceleration and stored in a lithium-ion battery. The eight-pot furthermore features cylinder-on-demand technology.

Audi claims the TFSI engine – which is mated to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission with “optimised shift times” and a new launch control function – “remains a thoroughbred V8 in terms of character and sound”, with the driver able to alter the soundtrack using new, customisable RS1 and RS2 modes included in the Audi drive select system (and directly accessible via a new “RS mode” button sited on the steering wheel).

The engine sends its oomph to all four wheels in a ratio of 40:60 via the all-mechanical centre differential. If one wheel slips, more drive torque automatically goes to the axle with the better traction. Up to 70 percent can be channelled to the front wheels and up to 85 percent to the rear wheels, says Audi.

The cult following of Audi's performance wagons will be pleased. This is the all-new Audi RS6 Avant. Visually it's a massive step from the current Audi S6 Avant. There's a lot going on and just look at the aggressive touches! The bold front end, massive alloy wheels and Audi RS exhaust pipes mean business. The big news will please American fans. "Throughout our 25-year RS history, the Audi RS 6 Avant is one of our absolute icons with a large global fan base,” says Oliver Hoffmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. “We will also be offering the RS 6 Avant in North America for the very first time. As such, we will be tapping into a new market with huge potential and generating further growth.”

Powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 with 441 kW and 800 Nm, it'll be capable of some serious performance. Audi's RS division claims its new performance wagon will do 0-100 kph in a claimed 3.6 seconds and will run to a limited top speed of 250 kph. It will do 0-200 kph in 12 seconds, which is seriously quick. The vehicle features an 8-speed Tiptronic setup with launch control functionality. Power goes to all 4 wheels in a 40:60 split with the all-mechanical centre differential doing all the work. Up to 70% can go to the front wheels while 85% can go to the rears.

At this stage, there's no word on South African availability, but European customers will be getting their cars as early as January 2020.

The concept of the super-fast Avant is more tightly woven into the Audi DNA than virtually any other hallmark of Vorsprung durch Technik, and that concept has been refined yet again in the creation of the new, fourth generation Audi RS6 Avant. Bristling with the technological accomplishments already delivered by the new A6 Avant, the latest addition to the Audi Sport fold combines formidable twin-turbo eight-cylinder TFSI power with state-of-the-art efficiency features including mild hybrid drive and cylinder-on-demand technology, helping to deliver epic performance as responsibly as possible.

Broad and powerful: the exterior design

With the exception of the front doors, roof and tailgate, the exterior of the Audi RS6 Avant comprises exclusively RS-specific parts, and to look at the car at rest on its sizeable 21-inch wheels shrouded by broad flared arches that expand its width by 40mm on each side, this is immediately evident.

The new RS6 Avant is one of the first Audi Sport models to feature the new RS design language. In addition to a new bonnet with powerdome, it also adopts the front headlights from the A7 model line which are not only slimmer and more sporting in style but also offer the RS Matrix LED laser headlight with darkened trims as an additional USP of the Audi RS6 Avant in the A6 family. Similar to the LED rear lights, they feature a dynamic indicator along with RS-specific sequencing when the vehicle is locked and unlocked.
Supreme power package: the engine

The 4.0 TFSI in the new Audi RS6 Avant delivers

600PS and 800 Nm (590.0 lb-ft) of torque, which is maintained at this high level between 2,050 and 4,500 rpm. In just 3.6 seconds the high-performance Avant sprints from zero to 62mph, and where conditions permit the driver can see 124mph by the time 12 seconds have elapsed. Top speed is electronically governed at 155mph.

Thanks to the 48-volt main electrical system the twin-turbo V8 combines maximum performance with high efficiency. A belt alternator starter lies at the heart of the mild hybrid system (MHEV). Up to 12 kW of power can be recovered during light deceleration and stored in a separate lithium-ion battery. If the driver lifts off the accelerator at a speed of between 34 and 99mph, the drive management selects one of two options: Depending on the driving situation and setting in the standard Audi drive select dynamic driving system the new Audi RS6 Avant recovers energy or coasts for up to 40 seconds with the engine switched off. Re-applying pressure on the accelerator instructs the belt alternator starter to restart the engine. MHEV technology allows for start/stop operation at speeds of up to 13mph. Fuel savings of up to 0.8 litres per 100 kilometres are possible in everyday driving.

Five hot new Audis will follow in the 591bhp wake of the super estate later this year

Audi Sport has revealed the fourth-generation RS6 Avant, which features a 591bhp mild-hybrid twin-turbo V8 and will spearhead a major RS range expansion.

The hot estate is one of six new Audi Sport models due this year, including the RSQ3 and RSQ8 SUVs, which have been spied testing recently. But the flurry of launches kicks off with the latest high-performance Audi estate, extending a lineage dating back to the first RS model, the 80-based RS2 Avant, which was introduced 25 years ago.

Project manager Michael Binder said the RS6 Avant represented “the DNA of Audi Sport”. The fourth-generation model has been extensively reworked from the A6 Avant to showcase the latest design language of Audi’s performance car division.

The only body panels carried over from the standard A6 are the front doors, roof and bootlid. Everything else is an RS-specific design. The new panels make the performance estate’s body 80mm wider than a standard A6’s, which measures 1886mm, although the track width is unchanged.

The revamped front end includes a new bonnet with a ‘powerdome’ and thinner headlights taken from the A7. The gloss black front grille is an RS-only design and the air intakes built into the front bumper are styled after those on the R8 supercar. For the first time, the Audi logo is available in black as part of black and carbon styling packs.

There are RS-specific side sills and roof spoiler and a bespoke rear end incorporates a bold diffuser and twin oval-shaped exhausts. Inside, a leather sports steering wheel features RS aluminium paddle shifters and there are leather- and Alcantara-covered sport seats and a revamped instrument panel.
