Bentley Flying Spur

Bentley Motors announced details of the world's most advanced luxury Grand Touring sports sedan - the all-new Bentley Flying Spur. Whether driving or being driven, the all-new Flying Spur offers a unique combination of limousine luxury and sports sedan performance, blending bold new road presence with world-leading interior quality and design, plus cutting-edge customer-focused technology.

"As with the launch of the Continental GT, the new Flying Spur is a ground up development that pushes the boundaries of both technology and craftsmanship to deliver segment-defining levels of performance and refinement," comments Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors.

Designed, engineered and handcrafted at the Home of Bentley in Crewe, England, the new Flying Spur showcases Bentley's unique application of cutting-edge & modern technology, seamlessly integrating the latest British craftsmanship with innovation features. The latest generation of Bentley Flying Spur pushes the existing boundaries of refinement and attention to detail to create the finest super-luxury sports sedan ever built.

The new Flying Spur showcases Bentley's modern sculptural design language through elegant yet muscular proportions, the marque's latest generation of unique, cut-crystal effect LED matrix headlamps - now enhanced by chrome sleeves - and new wrap-around rear lamps with 'B' motifs. New 22-inch wheel designs communicate the new Bentley Flying Spur's unique personality and prowess.

At the heart of the new Flying Spur is an enhanced version of Bentley's renowned 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12, mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission for faster, smoother gear changes. This new TSI engine delivers 635 PS (626 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.), 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds) and a top speed of 207mph (333 km/h).

New Bentley Flying Spur: 207mph luxury sports saloon revealed

Rolls-Royce Ghost rival has an equal focus on driver engagement and passenger comfort

The third-generation Bentley Flying Spur will represent a “quantum leap in technology, performance and innovation” over its predecessor, according to the Crewe-based maker.

Bentley hopes to establish itself as the leader in the ultra-luxury saloon market ahead of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost’s arrival next year and says it has created a car that “maintains Bentley DNA” to appeal to loyal customers while offering contemporary design to entice a new generation of buyers.

The goal for the model – which follows the Bentley Bentayga and Continental GT in the sales rankings – is to offer sports saloon agility paired with limousine refinement so that it caters to both drivers and those being chauffeured. The latter is a crucial selling point for the Flying Spur in China, which is the largest market for the model alongside the US.

Bentley claims that the new Flying Spur “owes only its name to its predecessor” – alluding to its new chassis, suspension, W12 engine and eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Much of the new Flying Spur’s set-up and componentry is shared with the Continental GT, launched last year.

However, despite the Flying Spur and Continental’s identical underpinnings, including the MSB platform that is also shared with Porsche’s Panamera, Bentley has sought to differentiate the two cars not only through the difference in body shape but also a number of finer design details both inside and out.

The Flying Spur will launch with Bentley’s familiar range-topping twin-turbocharged W12 engine, reworked for this generation. The 6.0-litre unit produces 626bhp and 664lb ft of torque, accelerating the car from 0-60mph in 3.7sec, 0.7sec faster than its predecessor. The top speed is 207mph. It is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission promised to deliver “smooth and refined acceleration, quicker gearshifts and improved fuel economy”.

New Bentley Flying Spur breaks cover with (467 kW) W12 heart

Bentley has revealed its new Flying Spur, billing it as the “world’s most advanced luxury grand touring sports sedan”.

The Crewe-based firm says the latest all-wheel-drive Flying Spur employs a “totally new and advanced aluminium and composite chassis” as well as 48 V electronic architecture. It also gains items such as electronic all-wheel steering and three-chamber air springs.

The third-generation model measures 5 316 mm long, 1 978 mm wide and 1 484 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3 194 mm and an unladen weight of 2 437 kg. Bentley says an extra 130 mm between the axles affords the new Flying Spur “a spacious and luxurious cabin that offers peerless comfort and refinement”.

Power comes from an “enhanced” version of Bentley’s twin-turbo 6,0-litre W12, mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission (the same unit used by the latest Continental GT). In its latest state of tune, the 12-cylinder powerplant offers 467 kW and 900 N.m (as it does in the Bentayga Speed), resulting in a sprint from standstill to three figures in a claimed 3,7 seconds. Top speed, meanwhile, is listed as 333 km/h.

Bentley’s New Flying Spur Is The Fastest Production Sedan Ever Built

Yesterday we shared the new Flying Spur from Bentley with you all but did not realise a rather important fact when posting.

Thanks to its 333 km/h top speed, it has become the fastest production sedan ever built.

The new Flying Spur will certainly be headed for South Africa and Bentley South Africa confirmed it will be here in the first half of 2020.

Bentley Flying Spur: riding up the hill at Goodwood

We speak to Bentley's vehicle dynamics boss as he drives us up the infamous hill on a wet Sunday morning

Autocar took to a streaming-wet Goodwood hillclimb at 10.45 on Sunday morning, having watched a scary series of antique bikes and cars wobble and weave in the rain to the top of the famous course.

We shouldn’t have worried about the fortunes of the all-new Bentley Flying Spur – or its 626bhp W12 – because a proper expert called Andrew Unsworth, the Crewe company’s head of vehicle dynamics, was at the wheel, and in any case the car bristled with stability and traction controls tuned for difficult occasions like this one.

What’s more, the Flying Spur is a brand-new design, based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB architecture specifically designed for its largest vehicles, that shares its major elements with the Porsche Panamera. Whereas the previous Flying Spur was related to the now-defunct VW Phaeton limo, and was severely limited in packaging and tyre sizes by that, the new model, about to go on sale, has a chassis and suspension set-up whose main elements were included in the original MLB programme, with Bentley engineers carrying as much clout in the negotiations as their Porsche colleagues.

Bentley Flying Spur First Edition packs unique trim and kit

British brand celebrates the launch of its new luxury saloon with £200,000 limited-edition variant

Bentley has revealed the limited-run First Edition version of its new Flying Spur saloon, which includes unique design elements to mark it out from the standard model.

The model is expected to be available from around £200,000 – some £15,000 more than the Flying Spur's starting price.

First Edition badging celebrates the company’s British heritage, with the theme carried over to the interior in the form of bespoke treadplate and headrest designs.

The First Edition sits on new 22in alloy wheels designed by in-house customisation firm Mulliner and is fitted as standard with the Touring package, which adds lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assistance and night vision.

The First Edition also receives a panoramic sunroof, interior mood lighting, colour-matched blinds and two-tone interior trim.

It's powered by the same 6.0-litre W12 as the standard Flying Spur, meaning it can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.7sec and on to a top speed of 207mph. Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Bentley Flying Spur Speed seen with plug-in hybrid system

Spyshots of Bentley's sportiest Flying Spur show charging flap for hybrid powertrain, likely to be Porsche Panamera-sourced

Bentley is believed to be testing an upcoming flagship Speed variant of its new Flying Spur luxury saloon, and new spyshots show it sporting a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The Rolls-Royce Ghost rival was revealed a few months back in 'standard' form, but these prototypes are wear cues of a yet-to-be-revealed sporting model. These include a honeycomb grille and lower air intakes - classic Speed traits - what look like larger brakes shod in new wheels and rear-end disguise, possibly hiding a boot spoiler.

But the most informative object on view is a second filling flap on the left-hand side of the car. That's almost certainly a charging port used in a plug-in hybrid powertrain, set to debut on the normal Flying Spur soon and seemingly also destined for the Speed.

While nothing is confirmed, the Flying Spur shares its MSB platform with the Porsche Panamera, which is available with a 671bhp plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain in the Turbo S E-Hybrid. That seems the natural bedfellow for the Flying Spur Speed, offering as it does a 0-62mph time of 3.4 sec in the 2.3-tonne Panamera.

With the Porsche managing a top speed of 194mph, Bentley may need to further develop the powertrain to allow it to beat the 207mph of the standard W12-engined Flying Spur.

Bentley Flying Spur gains Blackline variant

Sports saloon receives black exterior details, intended to give the car a “sportier persona”

Bentley has added a Blackline variant to its third-generation Flying Spur, which is intended to “create an even more powerful road presence” and “sportier persona” than the standard model, according to the car maker.

The specification replaces much of the exterior’s chrome details with a black gloss. As well as the company’s trademark Flying B mascot, the black trim incorporates the car’s radiator vanes, front grille, window trims, lower door and rear bumper blades. Light rings, door handles, wing vents and exhausts also receive the treatment. 21-inch alloy wheels are standard.
