2020 BMW 4-Series (2nd Generation)

BMW 4 Series Coupe and Convertible get top marks in Euro NCAP test

The BMW 4 Series Coupe and Convertible have been given a five-star rating by the Euro NCAP. Considering it is structurally similar to the 3 Series tested in 2019, the safety standard firm only conducted additional tests where performance of the cars may differ.

Where adult occupancy is concerned, the Euro NCAP notes that the passenger compartment of the BMW 4 Series Coupe and Convertible remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. The BMW 4 Series Coupe and Convertible showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of the driver and rear passenger was good or adequate for all critical body areas. Standard-fit autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system scored maximum points in tests of its functionality at low, city-driving speeds, with collisions avoided in all test scenarios.

Giving it an impressive pedestrian safety rating, Euro NCAP notes that the BMW 4 Series Coupe and Convertible boast an ‘active’ bonnet. Sensors in the bumper detect when a pedestrian has been struck and actuators lift the bonnet to provide greater clearance to the stiff structures in the engine compartment. BMW showed that the system performed robustly for a variety of pedestrian statures and over a wide range of speeds.

3D Design reveals conclusive aerodynamic package for the BMW 4 Series

3D Design has revealed its full customisation catalogue for the current BMW 4 Series Coupe with parts that can be applied to the front, side and rear. All parts provided by the Japanese custom design firm make use of carbon construction and can be attached to the panels of the M-Sport spec model.

At the front, 3D Design has kept the 4 Series’s large kidney grille the focus of the look by applying a front splitter with two inlets that guide air underneath the body. For a more prominent look, a pair of under splitters can be fitted to either side of the apron.

At the side, 3D Design has fitted a side skirt that is complemented by a 20-inch Type III forged alloy wheel which can be finished in a number of different shades. At the rear, a splitter is attached to the boot of the 4 Series.

BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe

The new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé is a car that delivers on so many fronts, combining sporting elegance with driving pleasure and, with five full-size seats, a roomy cabin and a versatile luggage area, it also represents modern functionality that is hard to emulate.

BMW has raised the bar even higher with the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé, building on the success of its predecessor. The latest version offers even sharper looks, improved driving dynamics, a superior engine line-up and even more interior space.

Like its recently updated BMW 4-Series siblings, the third body variant in the range adopts the brand's new design language, along with a refined premium ambience in the cabin and a wide array of innovations in the areas of control/operation and connectivity.

Four doors, five full-size seats, a large wide-opening boot and a versatile luggage compartment also ensures the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupé retains its characteristic strengths in both everyday driving and on longer trips.

New BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is bigger and bolder

The new-generation BMW 4 Series family is now complete with the reveal of the five-door Gran Coupe version, which is set to touch down in Mzansi around the fourth quarter of 2021.

The dimensions of the new 4 Series Gran Coupe have grown in every direction, with the new model having gained 143 mm in length, 27 mm in width and 53 mm in height. For what it’s worth, the Gran Coupe is 74 mm longer and 25 mm wider than the BMW 3 Series while the height remains unchanged. Boot space grows by 39 litres to total 470 litres.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe appears to share the majority of its exterior sheet metal with the battery-powered BMW i4 that was revealed recently, including the controversial giant vertical grille that is a fixture on all 4 Series models.

BMW South Africa says that the local line-up and specifications will be released closer to launch, but the international engine range includes all the usual suspects, including a range-topping M440i xDrive all-wheel drive model powered by a 3,0-litre straight-six turbopetrol that produces 275 kW and 500 N.m.

BMW also mentions a pair of 2-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrols in the form of a 420i with 135 kW and 300 N.m, and a 430i that’s good for 180 kW and 400 N.m. The only diesel option is a 420d that’s credited with 140 kW and 400 N.m.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe due in SA at the end of 202

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is set to go on sale in SA at the end of 2021. What’s new on the 4-door 4 Series?

We’ve come to live with the fact that BMW makes a 4-door version of the 4 Series that isn’t a 3 Series but is built on the same platform. Yes, it’s confusing but BMW is committed to it and states that the 4 Series Gran Coupe is aimed at a consumer looking for something a little more distinctive and stylish. This new version is a further departure from the 3 Series in that it has the love it or hate it front grille.

For those interested in the size of the new 4 Gran Coupe compared to the outgoing model, it’s 143 mm longer, 27 mm wider, 53 mm taller and a wheelbase that’s 46 mm longer. The wheelbase is actually 5 mm longer than the 3 Series as well. The expanded dimensions have resulted in a 470-litre boot, which is 39 litres bigger than before and an overall luggage space of 1 290 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Coupe roof line gives the 4 Series Gran Coupe a slightly more evocative silhouette than the 3 Series.

Due to it being considered a coupe, the 4 Series GC has frameless windows while the rear is dominated by the darkened LED taillights that extend towards the centre of the boot and along the rear flanks. An M Carbon exterior package can be specified as an option, and model-specific M Performance Parts are available as part of the Genuine BMW Accessory range.

BMW 4 Series Convertible M440i 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

For those wanting a four-seat convertible right now, the 4 Series seems an obvious choice. Mercedes has yet to reveal the soft-top version of the new C-Class, and the Audi A5 Cabriolet likely has a few years left before it is replaced. We’d be surprised if the BMW wasn’t the most dynamic of the three once they do arrive. The Ford Mustang remains a more left-field choice that simply can't match the BMW for on-road precision or in-cabin refinement.

Only very keen drivers will spot the disparity between it and the coupé, and the M440i’s engine is very sweet indeed. We have a feeling the rear-driven 330i may be even sweeter still, despite a cylinder deficit, although confirmation will have to wait until after we’ve driven one.

ROAD TEST: BMW M440i xDrive Coupé Steptronic

TEST SUMMARY

Make what you will of its looks but the M440i is an impressively engineered, thoroughly polished and satisfyingly wieldy new branch of the BMW midsize tree, blessed with both the visual and experiential distinction from the 3 Series for which its predecessor was found wanting. Given its ability to cosset and thrill in equal measure, it’s also one of the most impressively balanced offerings from the BMW stable in some time. This is something of a mixed blessing as there’s enough pace and dynamic involvement to be had here for most. That M4 had better be a very impressive piece of machinery ...

BMW M440i xDrive Convertible gets 344 kW tune-up from dÄHLer

The open-top BMW M440i xDrive Convertible has been given a modest revision at the hands of dÄHLer Competition Line. Included in this package is an increase in power, some suspension upgrades and minor visual revisions.

Using the brand’s B58 twin-scroll turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six, the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible has had its standard power output of 285 kW and 500 N.m of torque increased to 334 kw and 640 N.m thanks to a stage two performance package. If you want a smaller dose of power, the Swiss firm offers 316 kW and 610 N.m stage one kit as well. The eight-speed torque converter which distributes power to all-four wheels has remained unaltered.

dÄHLer has not noted how this increase in power affects the performance figures but as a reference, the standard BMW M440i xDrive Convertible, as per the brand’s claimed figures, will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4,9 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h.

For improved sound, the tuning house offers a stainless steel exhaust system with ceramic-coated 90 mm twin tailpipes and an Eventuri intake system. Furthermore, a CAN-bus-guided flap control system allows owners to adjust the volume of the exhaust note as they demand.

New 2022 Alpina B4 due as 462bhp four-door saloon

Source suggests Buchloe will use latest BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe as basis for next car

Alpina is expected to expand its portfolio of uprated BMW models with a new-generation B4, but while the previous car was based on the two-door 4 Series Coupé, its successor is tipped to take the new 4 Series Gran Coupé as its basis.

The tip comes courtesy of an unidentified source on the popular Bimmerpost forum who claims to have access to future product plans "compiled from various leaks within the BMW organization". According to the dates outlined, the new Alpina B4 will be introduced in March 2022, as BMW ushers in a new four-wheel-drive 430ix variant of the G26-generation 4 Series Gran Coupé.

Given the technical similarities between the previous-generation B4 and the 3 Series-based B3, we already have a good idea of the new four-door version's make-up.

The B4 will no doubt share the latest B3's twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol straight six, sending 462bhp and 516lb ft to both axles through an eight-speed automatic gearbox tuned for quick shifts and improved response. A diesel version, badged D4, will likely follow soon after.

Performance figures will be broadly comparable, too, given the Gran Coupé and 3 Series are closely matched in size and weight, so expect a sub-4.0sec 0-62mph time and a top speed approaching 190mph. The B4 will, as did the previous generation, essentially fill the gap between BMW's own M440i xDrive and the full-fat M4.

New 2022 Alpina B4 to be based on four-door Gran Coupé

Testing shots show Buchloe will use latest BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe as basis for next car

Alpina will expand its portfolio of uprated BMW models with a new-generation B4, but while the previous car was based on the two-door 4 Series Coupé, it seems its successor will take the new 4 Series Gran Coupé as its basis.

New spy shots show an obviously uprated 4 Series Gran Coupé being tested on public roads, lending credence to earlier claims that Buchloe's next unveiling will be a four-door proposition, rather than based on the two-door 4 Series coupé. The tip came from an unidentified source on the popular Bimmerpost forum who claimed to have access to future product plans "compiled from various leaks within the BMW organization".

According to the dates outlined, the new Alpina B4 will be introduced in March 2022, as BMW ushers in a new four-wheel-drive 430ix variant of the G26-generation 4 Series Gran Coupé. It remains possible that a two-door version could follow shortly after.

Given the technical similarities between the previous-generation B4 and the 3 Series-based B3, we already have a good idea of the new four-door version's make-up.

AC Schnitzer tarts up the new BMW 4 Series Convertible

Can you believe that AC Schnitzer has been around for over 30 years? The German company, based in Aachen, is one of the most respected tuners in the world, best known for their marmite love it or hate it tuning to BMW products.

And so, as if their rather large grille adorning the front of the G23 BMW 4 Series Convertible wasn’t subjective enough, AC Schnitzer have stepped in with what they describe as “top sporting performance and visual independence beyond the standard” for BMW’s swnaky new drop-top.

Their rather extensive range offers an array of items from engine tuning and exhaust setups to interior modifications, wheel and tyre sets and aerodynamics kits.

The power upgrade option is available for the M440i, 430i, 420i and the 430d models, however in South Africa we only have 420i and M440i xDrive models in convertible G23 form.

The 313 kW M440i by AC Schnitzer features both performance tuning and the exhaust system with AC Schnitzer exhaust tips which are available in carbon, chrome or black anodized. The AC Schnitzer sports suspension system features a spring and damper combination and lowers the body by between 15 mm and 25 mm.

AC Schnitzer Gives BMW 4 Series Convertible More Power And Sweet Subtle Styling

The BMW 4 Series has been one of the most controversial new cars thanks to the large elephant in the room but it seems the tweaking by tuner AC Schnitzer has improved it tenfold.

Visually you will see the drop-top 4er sporting new aerodynamic components including a front splitter which alone already provides 35 kg increased downforce on the front axle (at 200 km/h). Together with the front spoiler elements, the side skirts, the emblems and the rear skirt protection foil, the upgrades are not only visual but also functional.

The tuner offers various sets of new shoes available in BiColor or Anthracite are available in 19-inch or 20-inch sizes. A sports suspension system also lowers the car between 15 mm and 25 mm.
