Yep – the Puma isn’t radical really, it’s just a Fiesta inside and on the road that happens to be bulkier. But that’s actually a very clever morphing to have pulled off. It slingshots the Puma into pole position in a class that’s had little going for it apart from look-at-me styling for too long. Worth waiting for, in other words.

Performance version of compact SUV is expected to share 197bhp turbo three-pot with Fiesta ST
Ford has confirmed that a hot ST version of its new Puma crossover will arrive later this year.
A preview image - the first official acknowledgement of the model’s existence - suggests the Hyundai Kona N rival’s performance-inspired bodywork will bear a strong resemblance to recently spotted prototypes of the model.
The image gives little away as to how the Puma ST will be told apart from the standard car, but the wheels are of a similar design to those of the Fiesta ST, with which it will likely share its powertrain.
This 1.5-cylinder three-cylinder engine puts out 197bhp and 214lb ft, enough to send the hot supermini from 0-62mph in 6.7sec and on to a top speed of 144mph. The larger, higher-riding Puma will likely make some slight performance sacrifices.
Prototypes seen lapping the Nürburgring sported a prominent lower bodykit that extended around the car from a splitter-style front bumper to a new rear bumper that houses twin tailpipes.

High-spec model joins new crossover's range alongside new seven-speed automatic gearbox option
Ford has extended the appeal of the Puma crossover with a new top-spec trim level added to the range, alongside an automatic gearbox option.
While other flagship Fords such as the Fiesta and Kuga use Vignale branding on its own, the Puma receives the tag as an extension of existing ST-Line X spec.
The Puma ST-Line X Vignale is available from £25,240 and replaces the First Edition variants previously offered. Representing an increase of £1550 over ST-Line X, it adds unique 18-inch alloys, a satin aluminium upper grille, black lower grille and a body coloured lower rear bumper.

Performance variant of new small SUV is seen in undisguised form in Eastbourne during promotional shoot, reveal expected in coming months
Ford is soon to launch a hot ST version of its new Puma SUV, and the finished car has been seen out in public in the UK for the first time.
Shown with no disguise whatsover months in advance of an expected autumn unveiling, the Puma ST was photographed by a member of the public who subsequently posted the images to Twitter. The new model is being driven on a closed section of a coastal road in Eastbourne alongside an original Ford Racing Puma, with camera tracking cars indicating it is a promotional shoot of some sort.
The car in question features all the cues of previous Puma ST prototypes, alongside a distinctive new light green paintjob. Expect that colour to feature on the launch versions of the new car.

Hot compact crossover employs Fiesta ST’s engine and array of chassis trickery
Ford has bolstered its lineup of performance models with the addition of the Puma ST, the brand’s first European-market SUV to gain a dedicated performance range-topper.
Priced from £28,495 and available to order now, the hot Puma is the fourth entry into the ST range in Europe, joining similarly conceived versions of the Focus hatchback, Focus estate and Fiesta supermini, and is significantly reworked from the standard Puma that went on sale earlier this year.
The mild-hybrid 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine has been swapped out for the 1.5-litre turbo unit used in the Fiesta ST. Power output is unchanged at 197bhp – 46bhp more than made by the most potent Puma currently available. However, torque has been boosted from 214lb ft to 236lb ft, giving more linear acceleration and enabling the larger and 96kg-heavier Puma ST to match the Fiesta ST’s 0-62mph time of 6.7sec.
As in the Fiesta ST, the all-aluminium engine sends its reserves to the front axle via a six-speed manual gearbox. It’s equipped with a radial-axial turbocharger and integrated exhaust manifold for reduced lag, twin-independent variable cam timing and roll-restricting engine mounts designed to improve refinement and cornering performance.

An optimised chassis features bespoke twist-beam, anti-roll bar and damper configurations. Steering responses are 25 per cent faster and brakes 17 per cent larger than the standard Puma. Specially-developed Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres also help deliver the most agile Ford SUV driving experience yet.
Performance enhancements and aggressive styling sit side-by side with innovative features including Local Hazard Information connected-car technology and the Ford MegaBox that provides 80 litres of storage beneath the boot floor for everyday practicality.
