New Kia XCeed: first image of coupé-style crossover drops

Kia has released the first image of its upcoming XCeed, a coupé-like crossover that is set to slot in below the Sportage and above the upcoming Seltos.

Expected to be revealed later in June 2019, the Korean brand’s newcomer will be offered as a “sporty alternative to traditional larger SUVs”.

The single image shows the coupé-like roofline of the new Kia XCeed, which was styled at the firm’s European design centre in Frankfurt under the direction of Gregory Guillaume, vice president of design for Kia in Europe.

Kia promises the XCeed will offer a “sportier driving position” than a traditional SUV as well as a “clearer view of the road ahead" than a conventional family hatchback. It will offer “comparable levels of interior space and luggage capacity” to taller SUVs, claims the firm.

2019 Kia Xceed crossover: first official image released

Ceed-based crossover aims to offer sportier design and hatchback handling along with SUV practicality

Kia will expand its already diverse Ceed line-up with a fourth bodystyle, the Xceed crossover, which has been shown in an image ahead of its unveiling later this month.

The Xceed will sit alongside the existing Ceed hatchback, Ceed Sportswagon estate and Proceed shooting brake when it goes on sale later this year. More of a Ford Focus Active rival than a fully-fledged SUV, it sits between the smaller Stonic and mid-size Sportage.

The side profile shot reveales that the Xceed is similar to the hatchback fore of the B-pillar but has more prominent shoulders, a chunkier rear-end and a sloping roofline. It also features the typical plastic lower body cladding and larger wheels.

New Kia XCeed's (optional) digital instrument cluster revealed...

Kia recently revealed the first image of its upcoming XCeed, a coupé-like crossover that's set to slot in below the Sportage. And now the Korean automaker has shown off the new model’s digital instrument cluster.

Billed as the firm’s first fully digital instrument cluster, the 12,3-inch “Supervision” arrangement features a 1 920 x 720 px display.

It replaces the conventional speedometer and tachometer dials found in current Kia passenger vehicles. Between the two digital dials you’ll find a multi-function display, where the driver can view items such as turn-by-turn navigation instructions, audio information, phone calls and contacts, and in-depth trip information.

When the driver switches off the ignition, the cluster plays a short graphic of the vehicle in motion, and displays a summary of the drive (including time and distance driven, average fuel efficiency achieved and the estimated distance remaining).

Kia says its new Supervision instrument cluster will be offered as an option in the new XCeed, "depending on market and vehicle specification". Derivatives not fitted with the option will instead use physical dials with either a 3,8-inch mono-LCD or 4,2-inch colour TFT LCD screen.

Kia XCeed

The Kia XCeed is a new urban crossover utility vehicle (CUV) from Kia Motors which combines compact SUV practicality with the sporty packaging and engaging handling of a hatchback.

A sporty alternative to traditional SUVs, the new CUV nevertheless offers comparable levels of space for occupants and luggage. The Kia XCeed engages drivers with its sporty handling and a comfortable, assured ride, while providing a more commanding view of the road ahead than a conventional hatchback.

The Kia XCeed's suite of advanced safety, connectivity and infotainment features make it one of the most high-tech cars in the CUV class. Powered by a range of fast-revving, turbocharged engines, it is also one of the most efficient.

Emilio Herrera, Chief Operating Officer for Kia Motors Europe, comments: "The Kia XCeed addresses the growing desire for cars which offer more emotion and dynamism than an SUV, both in terms of the way a car looks and drives. Yet these customers don't want to lose the practicality that a larger car offers them. Our new CUV meets these needs, with a distinctive and modern design wrapped around a spacious, versatile body. Merging the strengths of both hatchback and SUV, the Kia XCeed offers something refreshing and different for European consumers."

Herrera adds: "This latest addition to the Kia portfolio takes the Ceed model family in a bold new direction, showing the breadth of Kia's imagination and ambition in the compact family car segment. The C-segment is the second largest class in the European market, and, thanks to a broadening range of body types, is set to take on greater importance in the years ahead. The expanded Ceed range now offers buyers more choice in this class than any other manufacturer."

New Kia XCeed: sleek 'coupé-like' crossover revealed (for Europe)

After earlier releasing a pair of teaser images, Kia has finally lifted the covers off its new XCeed, describing the newcomer as a crossover with “coupé-like” styling and positioning it as a “sporty alternative to traditional SUVs”.

Take note, however, that like the recently revealed Ford Puma, Kia’s latest front-driven crossover is seemingly not destined for South Africa, with the Korean firm saying it was conceived “exclusively for Europe”.

So, what are we missing out on? Well, while the XCeed is clearly part of the broader Ceed range, Kia says the only body panels carried over from the five-door hatchback are the front doors. Although the 2 650 mm wheelbase is the same as those of other Ceed models, the XCeed’s front and rear overhangs are extended (and it’s 26 mm wider than the hatch, too). Round back, you’ll notice the steeply angled “fastback” tailgate, hiding a luggage compartment rated at 426 litres.

Measuring 4 395 mm long, the newcomer is 90 mm shorter than the Sportage. Ground clearance comes in at 174 mm on 16-inch wheels and 184 mm on 18-inch items, and Kia has of course added the obligatory wheel-arch and side-sill cladding (along with silver roof rails).

New Kia Xceed crossover makes debut as sporty SUV

Compact crossover features a bespoke design and a raised ride height

Kia will exploit another crossover niche as it opens the order books for the Xceed, the fourth model in the Ceed range. It is set to include a full line-up of petrol and diesel engines and, later on, a plug-in hybrid variant.

The two-wheel-drive Xceed is said to marry hatchback-style driving dynamics with the practicality of a small SUV, wrapped up in a sportily styled body with a bespoke design.

It’s expected to start from around £19,000, with the similarly conceived Ford Focus Active lined up as its closest competitor.

The technical base for the Xceed is the five-door hatchback and it shares that car’s 2650mm wheelbase. Kia says only the front doors are carried over and rest of the body is new, including the windscreen and sloping roofline.

The new body is 85mm longer and 26mm wider than the hatch, thanks to extended front and rear overhangs that increase the length of the Xceed to 4395mm. Kia hopes these dimensions will put the Xceed in a different class from big-selling small SUVs like the Nissan Juke and its larger sibling, the Qashqai.

Kia XCeed Reveals Another Kia Crossover

Ceed crosses over into coupe territory with new XCeed.

Kia’s has applied pseudo-coupe styling and some gravel travel packaging to its premium hatchback, the Ceed.

This new version of the C-segment hatch is unsurprisingly called the XCeed and is a touch larger than the standard car. Measured bumper-to-bumper, the XCeed is 85 mm longer, stands 43 mm taller (thanks to additional ground clearance) and is also 26 mm wider across.

Those larger dimensions mean it is a bit bigger inside too, with luggage capacity growing by 31-litres over the Ceed hatch, to total 426-litres in the XCeed.

Kia’s engineers have made the XCeed slightly more adaptable to rough road use, by reducing suspension compression rates by a median 5%. Ground clearance also increases by 42 mm over the normal Ceed, to register 184 mm, if you specify the 18-inch wheel. That should be sufficient for travelling on less than perfect roads and off-the-map gravel tracks.

Unfortunately, the stylish XCeed is unlikely to become available to South African buyers, as Kia has targeted Europe as its primary destination market. SA will however get the Seltos Compact SUV to fill the void.

Kia releases plug-in hybrid Ceed Sportswagon and Xceed

Kia's first electrified Ceeds get 139bhp petrol-electric drivetrain, promising an EV range of about 37 miles

Kia has unveiled two frugal new petrol-electric additions to its range: the Xceed and Ceed Sportswagon Plug-in Hybrid.

The new models represent the first time Kia has electrified its family hatchback mainstay. They come at a time of increased popularity for the Ceed range, with Kia claiming a 40% increase in year-on-year sales in the first half of 2019. One in seven Kias sold in Europe is now electrified in some way.

The Xceed and Ceed Sportswagon are both powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 44.5kW electric motor and 8.9kWh lithium-polymer battery pack. Combined total outputs are 139bhp and 195lb ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 10.8sec for the Ceed Sportswagon and 11sec dead for the Xceed.

Both are mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission rather than the traditional CVT transmission found in most hybrids. Kia claims this makes for reduce powertrain losses from energy conversion, and offers a more enjoyable driving experience.

Combining the above with regenerative braking that harvests kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost, Kia claims it is targeting an all-electric range of 37 miles. Full homologation details, including fuel economy and emissions figures, will be released nearer the car’s market launch in early 2020.

Kia Xceed 2019 review

Should I buy one?

The incredible march of the SUV in all its forms continues, and the Kia Xceed is better than many. By recognising its role as a road car first and foremost it manages to deliver on the road thanks to its well executed dynamics that blend handling composure with decent refinement.

Crucially, by combining more distinctive looks, a bigger boot and an improved ride with the current Ceed’s improved quality, interior ambience and infotainment, the Xceed makes a case for itself as practical, well-equipped and hassle-free (think of that seven-year warranty) ownership proposition. That said, at around £2,000 more than the equivalent Ceed, the Xceed does lose some of the standard model’s value-for-money appeal.

Here's why Kia won two 2019 Women’s World Car of the Year awards - SA judge

• KIA XCeed wins ‘Urban Car Award’; KIA e-Soul claims ‘Green Car Award’
• Votes from 41 female jury members from 34 different countries
• Both KIA models popular with those looking for a new urban crossover

KIA has won two 2019 Women’s World Car of the Year awards – the KIA XCeed won the ‘Urban Car Award’, while the KIA e-Soul picked up the ‘Green Car Award’. The Korean automaker was the only manufacturer to win awards in two different categories.

Announced at a ceremony during the recent Dubai International Motor Show, the Women’s World Car of the Year awards are voted for by a carefully selected judging panel comprised of 41 female automotive writers from 34 countries spread across five continents.

According to Charleen Clarke, who represents South Africa on the jury, the two wins for Kia are a testament to the evolution of the Kia brand – from one that was producing inexpensive vehicles to one that now produces vehicles that are benchmarks within their sectors.

"The judges commented that the XCeed puts Kia at the top of its game in the crossover coupé market. The XCeed is stylish and practical, engaging to drive and feels roomy for its compact size. It offers all the benefits of a typical SUV.

"Furthermore, the judges commented that the XCeed’s design, interior, build quality, safety features and road manners were most impressive. They described it as a ‘very balanced car’,” says Clarke.

The Top Gear car review:
Kia XCeed

Verdict
Final thoughts and pick of the range

A capable answer to a question nobody should be asking
Essentially, you’ll buy an XCeed because you like the looks, so it’s clear to see why Kia has gone all out on the design and changed so many panels from the hatch.

It is sprung slightly softer too, but the driving experience just can’t match up. The sweet spot in the range would probably be the 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to the six-speed manual gearbox, but most will go with the DCT.

Interestingly, there’s a plug-in hybrid coming in 2020 too, so Kia clearly sees the XCeed as having a different target market to the EV or hybrid-only Niro. As coupé/crossover/SUVs go, the XCeed isn’t a bad one. As niche’s go though…

Says it all for me. It is a manual car with a gimmick thrown to make it an automatic.

Kia Ceed Sportswagon and XCeed plug-in hybrids revealed

Kia's new petrol-electric PHEVs start from £29,995, with first deliveries expected in April

Kia has revealed UK spec details of its first plug-in hybrid models, based on the Ceed Sportswagon and XCeed crossover.

Available to order now, with first deliveries expected in April, the Sportswagon PHEV is priced at £29,995 in its sole 3 trim level, while the XCeed starts from £30,695 with a choice of 3 or First Edition trims.

The Xceed and Ceed Sportswagon are both powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 44.5kW electric motor and an 8.9kWh lithium-polymer battery pack. Combined outputs are 139bhp and 195lb ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 10.8sec for the Ceed Sportswagon and 11.0sec dead for the XCeed.

Both are mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox rather than the traditional continuously variable transmission (CVT) found in most hybrids. Kia claims this makes for reduced powertrain losses from energy conversion and offers a more enjoyable driving experience.
