Should I buy one?

Despite its shortcomings, this Xceed still feels a car much more comfortable in its skin than the fully-loaded example. It’s nicely equipped with competent dynamics, and it’s only the engine’s performance that asks you to compromise.

Like the Ceed hatchback on which it is based, the nicely-styled Xceed is a car that gets so much right, and deserves success as well as your consideration.

Should I buy one?

Hmmm. Not without examining your need for a plug-in hybrid in the first place. (Kia makes both petrol and pure EV cars that are nicer day-to-day propositions.) And not without trying rival PHEVs as well. This Xceed’s peculiar powertrain is presented as an advantage when it comes to energy saving, but drive one for a week and it feels more like a drawback.

The Xceed is a decent car, well made and nice looking – and with that spectacular seven-year warranty – let down by what’s under the lid. More development, please.

Updated 2023 Kia Xceed will go hybrid-only

Redesigned high-riding hatchback will be offered with mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains

The high-riding Kia Xceed hatchback is due a mid-life facelift, bringing updated styling, an enhanced cabin and an all-electrified powertrain line-up.

The subtly updated Citroën C4 rival will continue to be offered with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options, but the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines offered at launch are set to be discontinued.

Currently, the electrified Xceed offering comprises a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol with a 48V mild-hybrid system, capable of a claimed 55.4mpg; and a plug-in hybrid comprising a 1.6-litre petrol engine and an 8.9kWh battery pack that powers an electric motor for up to 36 miles at a time.

There's no word on whether either of these variants will be discontinued or upgraded, but the electrification of the Xceed line-up could have it receive the 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol mild-hybrid available in the closely related Kia Stonic.

After selling over 120,000 units in Europe, Kia's highly successful XCeed compact crossover has received a series of product enhancements including a bold new exterior design, an enhanced interior and a new GT-line trim that brings the emotions of the Ceed GT to the popular model. These changes will make the XCeed an even more enticing proposition in the popular C-Crossover segment.

The XCeed has been a hugely popular car for Kia in the UK, accounting for 10 per cent of total Kia sales in the country. The exact UK specification, technical data and pricing information for the new XCeed will be revealed nearer the on-sale date.

The new XCeed integrates a number of design changes alongside a competitive powertrain line-up that includes mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel versions. Both the exterior and interior have been enhanced to better match the sporty urban nature of the XCeed and make it an even more distinctive member of the wider Ceed model family.

The new Kia Xceed crossover will arrive later this year with redesigned bodywork, an upgraded interior and a new specification level.

Already accounting for 10% of Kia’s sales in the UK, the updated Xceed also gains a revised engine line-up and changes to driving dynamics, which the firm says provides a “sportier alternative” to other larger models on sale.

The model will be offered with three engines in Europe, with just two coming to the UK. On our shores, the range opens with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 157bhp and 186 lb ft.

A plug-in hybrid powertrain is also available, pairing a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a six-speed dual clutch transmission, an 8.9kWh battery and a 44.5kW electric motor. It offers 141bhp and 195lb ft, with up to 29 miles of electric-only driving, which the firm says equates to around 37 miles in the city.

Kia says it has improved the ride of the popular crossover with the inclusion of front hydraulic rebound stoppers, which are seen on a Ceed model for the first time.

Only a handful of manufacturers make a car like the Xceed, a style-forward crossover that sits between small SUVs like the Skoda Kamiq and medium ones like the Skoda Karoq. Direct rivals include the Volkswagen T-Roc, Citroën C4, Toyota C-HR and Cupra Formentor. The Cupra feels like the more complete package, but is also a more expensive one. Even if you include small SUVs, the Xceed offers a lot of value for money.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“A capable answer to a question nobody should be asking”

Essentially, you’ll buy an XCeed because you like the looks, so it’s clear to see why Kia has gone all out on the design and changed so many panels from the hatch.

It’s sprung slightly softer too, but do you really want to pay a premium for a car that’s less practical, less spacious and no better to drive than the hatch on which it’s based? Kia is adamant that this niche exists and a big chunk of Ceed sales in the UK are XCeeds, so who are we to question the logic behind it?

The sweet spot in the line-up is probably the ‘3’ grade 1.5 petrol for the best balance of kit and powertrain, although the addition of the plug-in hybrid is a welcome (albeit oddly pitched) pick too. In case the XCeed wasn’t niche enough for you already…
