The infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife is regarded as the most demanding race track in the world and has become an increasingly important marketing tool in recent years and now MINI has announced that their new John Cooper Works GP has lapped it in 7:56:69.
That is a very clear statement that the new MINI John Cooper Works GP wants to be perceived as a true sports car and not just as an overpowered city car.

Fastest-ever Mini is priced to match its BMW M135i stablemate, but will be built on a much smaller scale
Mini has announced that its upcoming John Cooper Works GP hot hatch will be priced from £34,995, and that it will be revealed at the Los Angeles motor show later this month.
The brand has also revealed that a development prototype has set a Nürburgring lap time of less than eight minutes, suggesting it could be capable of beating the Renault Mégane RS Trophy-R's 7min 40.1sec lap time, set earlier this year.
A camouflaged JCW GP prototype appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, giving British Mini fans a first taste of the 302bhp hot hatch following its disguised public debut at the Nürburgring 24-hour race.

It is being called the fastest MINI ever and this is thanks to the 2.0-litre TwinPower four-pot punching out 301 hp (225 kW). This will be connected to an automatic gearbox and it is unconfirmed if there will be a manual offering too but this is highly doubtful.

The hot hatch is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in “limited numbers” (a small selection from the 3 000-unit global production run) from the third quarter of 2020.
Power comes from the BMW Group’s 225 kW/450 N.m version of the turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (yes, as used in the M135i xDrive), which accelerates the two-seater model from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 5,2 seconds and on to a top speed of 265 km/h.

The camouflage has come off and so have the boxing gloves. The Mini JCW GP is ready to fight!
This is Mini’s fastest and most powerful car ever and it thumps out 225 kW and 450 Nm of torque from its twin-turbocharged 2.0-litre engine. An 8-speed Steptronic transmission with an integrated differential lock ensures brisk acceleration with Mini claiming a zero to 100 kph sprint time of 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 265 kph. The JCW GP is a potent front-wheel-drive car, like the Honda Civic Type R, but offers 50 Nm more torque and is 0.6 seconds quicker to 100 kph, which is rather significant because the Type R is very, very fast...
Its impressive performance is matched with striking bodywork which includes a large roof spoiler which aids in increasing downforce, a model-specific front apron with a blackband spoiler lip and large air intakes and modified flared wheel arches made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) which give the car an aggressive and purposeful stance.
Only 3 000 Mini JCW GP’s will be produced at Mini’s plant in Oxford and customer deliveries are expected to start in March 2020. The JCW GP has been confirmed for South Africa in Q3 of 2020 but it will be offered in limited numbers and pricing has yet to be confirmed. We will keep you updated!

Mini has explained why its new John Cooper Works GP is offered in automatic guise only, after enthusiasts decried the lack of a manual gearbox option.
Speaking to autoblog.com at the Los Angeles Auto Show after the new hot hatch's reveal, representatives of the BMW-backed brand suggested it didn’t have a manual gearbox strong enough to handle the turbocharged 2,0-litre engine’s lofty peak outputs of 225 kW and 450 N.m. It also pointed out demand for manual models continued to fall.
While the firm could have developed a stronger manual cog-swapper for use in the JCW GP, it would have required too large an investment to justify (particularly considering just 3 000 units will be built), the report suggests. So, instead, Mini stuck with the familiar eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission.

Should I buy one?
The GP is now even faster and remorseless in handling ability than ever before. It’s wonderfully focused and manages to involve you to a high degree in the right conditions.
However, despite its obvious competency, the decision to make it available with an automatic gearbox only appears misguided. As hardcore as it is in many areas, it doesn’t quite feel like the full raging race car for the road that Mini would have us believe it is.
