The 2nd Gen of the Clio-based crossover has been announced.

Renault Captur

A pioneer of the small SUV market, the Renault Captur has sold 1.2 million units since its launch in 2013, rapidly becoming the best selling model in its class across Europe.

In a sector that has become extremely competitive, the All-New Captur has reinvented itself without losing the unique identity that made the original such a success. Featuring athletic and dynamic new looks, an even more welcoming and practical interior and setting new technology standard, the New Renault Captur is more grown-up and upmarket than ever.

The All-New Captur is one of the key model's in Renault's Drive the Future (2017-2022) strategic plan, thanks in no small part to its status as a truly global product. Not only is it sold on every continent, the All-New Renault Captur will be also be manufactured in China, a key market for Renault.

New Renault Captur unveiled! Second-gen model confirmed for SA

The new Renault Captur has been unveiled, with the second-generation model featuring fresh (yet somewhat familiar) styling, new technology and what the French firm describes as “a more practical interior”.

Renault South Africa told CARmag.co.za it was planning a local launch of the new Captur in the second half of 2020.

The newcomer runs on the latest CMF-B platform (which also underpins the new Clio) and has grown in length by a full 110 mm (to 4 228 mm).

Inside, you’ll likely notice the new Captur borrows much from the latest Clio, including the so-called “Smart Cockpit” layout (complete with an optional 9,3-inch infotainment screen and a TFT digital display offered with a diameter of either seven or ten inches) that debuted on the hatchback.

Furthermore, the Boulogne-Billancourt-based automaker claims the interior quality will rival models “from the class above”. The steering wheel has also been slimmed down thanks to the use of a more compact airbag. New front seats bearing bases that are 15 mm longer and boasting a “more enveloping shape” have been adopted, while rear legroom has improved by a claimed 17 mm.

Luggage capacity, meanwhile, has been increased by 81 litres, with 536 litres on offer with the rear bench dropped flat. The aforementioned bench is again of the sliding variety, offering 160 mm of movement to maximise either passenger- or boot-space.

While local engine specifications have yet to be confirmed, Renault in Europe says the Captur will be offered with a “wider range of redesigned petrol and diesel engines”, plus the addition of a plug-in hybrid model for some markets (the latter from 2020).

Renault updates big-selling Captur with new platform and interior

Crossover gets significant makeover inside, with plug-in hybrid version still to come

Renault has followed up its strong-selling Captur crossover with a second-generation model that features a similar dramatic interior revamp as the Clio – and will also be offered as a plug-in hybrid.

The French maker claims to have sold more of the outgoing Captur last year than when it first launched in 2013. To continue that success, the new Seat Arona rival adopts an evolutionary approach to the exterior design that Renault describes as “more modern, more muscular and more expressive, with more SUV design cues”. LED head and tail-lights are also now standard across the range.

Set to go on sale at the end of this year, the new crossover is significantly larger than its predecessor, with 100mm added to its length – with a 33mm longer wheelbase – and a 19mm increase in width. The result is claimed class-leading rear seat space, aided by a sliding bench that can be adjusted by up to 16cm, and a 536-litre boot that is 81 litres larger than the outgoing car.

The Mk2 Captur sits on the same CMF-B platform first used for the latest Clio. It’s said to weigh “about the same” as the old car despite its increase in size and equipment levels, thanks to details such as an aluminium bonnet and plastic tailgate.

The interior of the new car, like the Clio, has had a more substantial overhaul than the exterior. Renault claims it offers “a new dimension of quality and comfort rivalling models from the class above” with extensive use of higher-grade materials and newly designed seats. There’s also a new floating centre console, freeing up additional storage and space for wireless phone charging.

All-New Renault Captur Unveiled

Renault has announced the arrival of an all-new Captur and it's confirmed for a South African market introduction.

With over 1.2 million units sold globally since its launch back in 2013, the Renault Captur has proven immensely popular. The all-new Renault Captur is underpinned by the new CMF-B platform, shared with the all-new Renault Clio, itself due for market introduction in SA in 2020. The main benefit of this CMF-B platform is it makes provision for electrification.

Speaking of, Renault is ambitious with its electricifcation strategy. There will be 12 electric models in its range and this new Captur will be the first recipient of the all-new E-Tech plug-in hybrid engine. As for this new Captur, it's 110 mm longer and boasts a higher waistline in comparison to the outgoing model. Inside, the legroom has been extended by 17 mm and boot space has grown by 81 litres. It also features front and rear protection skid plates, chunky cladding and wheel arch extensions, giving it some visual SUV credentials.

The cabin focuses on space and connectivity. The Smart Cockpit layout is based on the Clio and there's a choice of infotainment screen sizes. Renault's Easy Link multimedia system adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the mix. Standard levels of tech appear generous with LED headlights across the range, the option of a sunroof, BOSE premium audio system and a whole host of safety features like 360-degree camera, active emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection to name but a few.

Renault Captur 130 TCe Iconic 6-speed 2019 review

Should I buy one?

As yet, there is no B-SUV that you’d label a positively enjoyable drive, and this Captur doesn’t change that. But it’s polished enough to be a challenge to the VW T-Cross that is the best of them, and it comes with an interior that’s more interesting and more convenient. The option of traffic jam assistance, enabled via radar-governed cruise control, and lane centring – both firsts in the segment – are appealing aids for the real world of congested roads.

Above all, given the existing Captur’s still growing popularity, the fact that this version is comprehensively better than the last, while building on the design allure of the original, makes it well worth a fresh look. And the innovative plug-in hybrid should be worth the wait, too.

Renault exec says new Captur will fight both Volkswagen T-Cross and T-Roc

A high-ranking Renault executive says the new Captur has the resources to take on both the Volkswagen T-Cross and the larger T-Roc.

Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Olivier Brosse, Renault’s programme director for small cars, said the second-generation Captur was just the right size to cover the segment.

Renault Captur 1.0 TCE 100 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

While you can clearly add power and performance to the car at greater cost, then, or even a twin-clutch gearbox or a plug-in hybrid powertrain if you want to, it’s encouraging to discover that you can keep your Captur simple and cheap – and you won’t end up with a second-rate drive; and that’s not a quality that every rival offers. The TCE 100 motor isn’t in over its head in powering this car by any means, even though it’s not a car that keener drivers should probably seek out.

In a wider sense, meanwhile, the Captur may not quite be the biggest crossover, the comfiest or the best-handling, but it’s actually no longer far adrift of the best of its opponents any which way you care to judge it. The particular blend of dynamic competence, interior quality and versatility, design appeal and value ought it does offer ought to continue to serve it rather well.
