New 2021 Subaru Outback: 4x4 estate on sale in Europe next month

Sixth-generation off-roader gains new turbocharged boxer engine, tech and safety upgrade

Subaru will launch the sixth-generation Outback SUV in Europe next month, promising "driving fun, all-around safety and above-average resilience" from the Volvo V90 Cross Country rival.

The car will go on sale with a substantially overhauled version of the previous car's 2.4-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine, producing 180bhp. In the US, range-topping cars get a more powerful 2.4-litre turbocharged unit with 256bhp, but that's not yet confirmed to be offered here.

Both engines will be powered through an eight-speed CVT gearbox, which has been retuned to give performance comparable to a conventional eight-speed automatic, and uses lower-viscosity oil and new hydraulics to give 22% less power loss than the previous car's gearbox.

The new version of the durable off-roader comes with Subaru’s four-wheel drive system as standard, along with systems such as active torque vectoring and hill descent control. It also features improved ground clearance over the previous generation.

Adventure Wagon: All-new Subaru Outback goes on sale in South Africa

Subaru Southern Africa says the new Outback is the next step in the evolution of the SUV wagon that it developed in 1994. It represents Subaru’s commitment to creating vehicles that prioritise customer safety and peace of mind through engineering excellence, it says.

MOST ADVANCED SUBARU EVER MADE

The all-new Subaru Outback is the most advanced, most capable and safest car in the brand’s history. For the first time in South Africa, Outback is offered in two trim levels, the Field and Touring models giving customers more choice to suit specific lifestyles.

The Outback also debuts several new technologies such as Hands Free Tailgate function, DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System and a slick new 29cm portrait-oriented touch screen interface.

“The all-new Outback is the representation of everything for which Subaru strives to achieve – unmatched safety, capability, practicality and especially in this case, a premium driving experience on any terrain,” says Nteo Nkoli, the marketing lead at Subaru SA.

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness Is A Compromise That Americans Will Gladly Make

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness is a great idea. Subaru, the brand known for its practical, efficient-ish adventure wagons, is taking its most popular model and adapting it to cash in on the current trend toward more “rugged” SUVs. Is the Subaru Outback Wilderness edition an off-road beast? After having driven it, I can say the answer is “no.” But this car is going to print money regardless. Here’s why.

Have you seen the Toyota RAV4 lately? It’s chunky and aggressive, and now comes in a TRD Off-Road trim that cranks the off-road-ish looks to the next level. Ford now has a crossover in the Escape-based Bronco Sport that’s aimed squarely at the outdoorsperson crowd that tends to love Subarus. There’s the Kia Seltos. And then of course, there’s still Jeep, which offers the Compass, Cherokee, and Renegade — front-wheel drive-based crossovers that seek to lure in Subaru buyers with promises of real off-road capability and reasonable fuel economy.

Subaru isn’t just going to sit around and watch these competitors lure its customers away with rugged styling and commercials showing people having fun off-road. No, to compete, the brand has launched a “Wilderness” trim on its most popular model, the Outback (and likely other models in the near future). I think it’s going to be a smash hit, even though it’s a significant compromise.

REVIEW | Grown and improved Subaru Outback still has a point to prove in SA

• The Outback is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine that produces 138kW and 245Nm.

• Pricing starts from R699 000 for the Field derivative and R729 000 for the Touring.

• The vehicle features a number of safety and security features as standard.

The weather might not have been ideal across the country, especially in Cape Town where wet and windy conditions asserted their influence. These type of conditions would normally serve as a deterrent for most vehicles, but Subaru's new Outback crossover would eat it for breakfast.

The Japanese automaker first launched the Outback in 1994, and it currently sits alongside the Forester, XV and Impreza in the local line-up. Subaru's presence in South Africa has been relatively mooted, and using the Naamsa figures for the month of June, they only sold 65 new vehicles - eight of them were Outback's.

Subaru launched its latest Outback crossover in SA earlier this year, and for the first time, customers had the option to choose between two versions. Pricing for the Field derivative starts from R699 000 while the top-of-the-range Touring goes for R729 000. The model specification tested here is the Field.

Verdict

Let’s get the reality check out of the way first. Station wagons represent but a tiny pocket of the SUV-dominated new-vehicle market. So far, Subaru SA has sold fewer than 100 units of its off-road-capable Outback every year. In comparison, Toyota retailed 9 635 units of the Fortuner in 2020. Also, many local motorists associate station wagons with funeral hearses, which is, well, unfortunate.

However, many (if not most) car purchases in South Africa are motivated more by the heart (emotion), than the head (logic). The talented Subaru Outback is the Leatherman multitool of the car world. It has an exceptionally broad set of skills and at the price, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an off-road-capable family vehicle that is as comprehensively equipped, safe, refined and practical.

Don’t be put off by the Subaru’s less-than-vigorous powertrain, the model is overtly comfort-biased and economy-focused – as long as you don’t plan to tow large trailers, its performance should be fine. If you appreciate station-wagon looks and enjoy adventuring, you’d be hard-pressed to beat this criminally underrated offering. For R700k, it represents a very accomplished package that’s ready for action.

Subaru Outback 2.5i Lineartronic Limited 2021 review

Should I buy one?

A new platform has brought added chassis sophistication, driving charm and refinement to an already characterful wagon.

If you’ve been considering buying an Outback, now is the time to step in, because the new model is a clear improvement over the old, most notably in its ride and refinement.
