The all new Outback./

Subaru Outback

Subaru of America introduced the all-new 2020 Outback offering the most advanced features, design and capability in its history. The sixth-generation SUV comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Subaru's award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. With an available tablet-style 11.6-inch SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia system with integrated center information display, DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System and new XT models with 260 horsepower, the 2020 Subaru Outback delivers greater technology, safety and performance than ever before.

Built on the Subaru Global Platform, which provides increased safety, dynamics and quietness as well as reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), the Outback will be available in Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT and Touring XT models.

PERFORMANCE AND CAPABILITY

The 2020 Outback delivers the optimal blend of SUV capability and car-like ride and handling with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Active Torque Vectoring, Vehicle Dynamics Control and X-MODE with Hill Descent Control. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance for all Subaru Outback models is greater than that in many SUVs, yet the Outback maintains a comfortably low step-in height for both front and rear passenger entry.

For the first time since 2009, the Outback lineup offers a turbocharged engine. Standard on XT models, the 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine delivers robust all-around performance with 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 277 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. Meanwhile, the standard naturally aspirated 2.5-liter BOXER, with direct injection and nearly 90 percent of its parts new, delivers 182 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 176 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm.

New Subaru Outback Shown

Subaru has introduced its new 6th-generation Outback station wagon at the New York Auto Show.

Sadly, station wagons are not so popular in South Africa but the Outback has soldiered on regardless in a market that has turned its attention to crossovers and SUVs. The Outback, however, remains a practical choice and now a new Outback has been revealed.

It’s built on the Subaru Global Platform and while it has a familiar but more chiselled look, this is an all new-vehicle. It’s stiffer and safer than ever before and Subaru says that the new Outback’s body absorbs up to 40% more energy in a front-side crash. 8 airbags are fitted as standard as is Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology which now offers advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centering. Subaru has also adopted various sound-deadening strategies to create a quieter cabin and improved comfort levels as a result.

Subaru SA has stated that the new Outback will take at least a year to reach South Africa (Q2 2020) but its exact arrival will be confirmed in due course.

Interior is not bad. Has a Volvo feel to it. Quite a nice improvement.
Exterior....still ugly.

Over 85 Percent Of All Wagons Sold Here Are Subaru Outbacks

The Subaru Outback sells well for its segment. In fact, according to J.D. Power data referenced in a CNBC video on the U.S. wagon market, the Outback makes up basically the entire U.S. wagon market.

To be clear, that market is still incredibly small. The data shows that wagons represent 1.4 percent of all U.S. sales, with the Outback accounting for 1.2 percent of all U.S. sales on its own. Put another way, 85 percent of all wagons sold new in the U.S. are Outbacks.

Looking at sales numbers, it’s pretty clear that the Outback doesn’t have true competitors in the wagon space. Subaru managed to move 178,854 of them last year, while Volkswagen sold 14,124 Golf Sportwagens. Volvo V90, V90 Cross Country, V60 and V60 Cross Country sales combined for 2,540 total deliveries.

Needs to be taken Out Back and shot, it is ugly as all hell

Pricing! New (sixth-gen) Subaru Outback locked in for South Africa

Subaru Southern Africa has released local pricing for the new Outback ahead of its market launch at the start of May 2021.

It’s been quite a wait for the sixth-generation Outback, which was revealed in New York back in April 2019. While the version sold in North America can be specified with a turbocharged 2,4-litre flat-four engine worth 191 kW and 375 N.m, SA-spec derivatives will do without forced induction.

Yes, the local Outback range will comprise two variants, each employing the Japanese automaker’s naturally aspirated 2,5-litre boxer unit, driving all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission. While Subaru SA has yet to announce peak outputs, this engine is already offered in the Forester range, where it generates 136 kW and 239 N.m.

In South Africa, the new Outback will be available in two trim levels: Field (R699 000) and Touring (R729 000). The company says both models offer the “highest levels of technology and safety”, though the Field derivative adopts a “more rugged design” and Touring version “more urban trim accents”.

Pricing:

Subaru Outback 2,5i-Field ES: R699 000
Subaru Outback 2,5i-Touring ES: R729 000
