The Facelift version of the B8 Passat is out.

The countdown has begun: the 30 millionth Passat will leave the assembly line this spring. This landmark makes it the most successful mid-size model worldwide. And that's not all. After the Golf (35 million vehicles) - and ahead of the legendary Beetle (21.5 million units) - the Volkswagen Passat is one of the three most popular vehicles from Volkswagen to date. One thing is certain: the 30 millionth Passat will be one of the first examples of the significantly enhanced eighth generation. A major technical update sees the new Passat incorporate the latest brand innovations. Pre-sales will start in May 2019 in some European countries and the market launch will start from the end of August 2019 onwards (Germany).

Facelifted Volkswagen Passat revealed with added tech

The facelifted Volkswagen Passat has been revealed ahead of its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show, with the Euro-spec model gaining all sorts of added technology.

The unveiling of this refreshed model (which runs on the VW Group’s familiar MQB platform) comes after VW whipped the covers off the US-spec version (still on the older PQ46 architecture) in January 2019. The model sold in South Africa, of course, lines up with the former.

Styling changes include new front and rear bumpers, a fresh grille and the repositioning of the “Passat” lettering centrally across the tailgate. Furthermore, new LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED foglamps and LED taillamp clusters have been added, along with fresh exterior colours and updated 17-, 18-, and 19-inch alloy wheel designs. As before, a R-Line package will be available (as applied to the blue wagon variant pictured below).

Billed as a “major technical update”, the facelift includes the debut of the Wolfsburg-based firm’s so-called “IQ.drive” system, a new umbrella term for VW’s various driver assistance functions. For instance, the updated Passat will be offered with a new Travel Assist function, which allows for “partially automated driving across practically the whole speed range up to 210 km/h”.

Emergency steering assist is also new to the Passat, with Volkswagen claiming the system “improves safety during sudden evasive manoeuvres via braking intervention”. In addition, VW says the lane assist function has been optimised thanks to a new multifunction camera. The Passat will furthermore be the first Volkswagen featuring a capacitive steering wheel that “detects touch by the driver”.

The latest version of VW’s digital cockpit (essentially replacing the active info display) will be offered in the updated Passat, complete with an “enhanced high-contrast graphics display” and a variety of new functions. Three display configurations can now be customised via the new multifunction steering wheel.

The powertrain line-up (for Europe, at least) again features a plug-in hybrid set-up in the Passat GTE, which is capable of covering “approximately 55 km” on electricity alone in the new WLTP cycle. Then there’s the newly developed 2,0 TDI Evo, a turbodiesel engine with an output of 110 kW that VW says produces 10 g/km less CO₂ compared with the equivalent engine in the predecessor.

The engine range furthermore includes three TSI petrol units (with outputs of 110 kW, 140 kW and 200 kW) as well as three TDI diesel mills (delivering 88 kW, 140 kW and 176 kW, respectively).

Revised Volkswagen Passat revealed ahead of Geneva

Executive saloon and estate go gentle on design changes but heavy on new technology

Volkswagen has pulled the wraps off facelifted versions of the Passat saloon and estate ahead of their public debut at the Geneva motor show.

The brand has sold close to 30 million Passats across six generations since 1973, so the changes to the tried-and-tested formula are modest.

The bumpers and lights have been tweaked, with LED lights now standard across the range, and there are new wheel designs and colour options. But the more significant changes concern technology, with a raft of assistance and connectivity upgrades.

The headline new arrival is a semi-autonomous autopilot system capable of operating at higher speeds – a Volkswagen first. Dubbed Travel Assist, this can actively steer the Passat at speeds of up to 130mph – a big advance on the 25mph limit of the Traffic Jam Assist system on the current car. Travel Assist works in conjunction with smart adaptive cruise control that can respond to speed limits, junctions and corners.

The new MIB3 infotainment system has a permanent data connection and brings the option of a digital instrument display. Users of iPhones will be able to access Apple CarPlay without a connection cable, plus Volkswagen is planning to allow smartphone key access to the car, although only with Samsung devices for now.

Mechanical changes are limited. The 148bhp 1.5 TSI Evo petrol engine from the current car will continue to be the base petrol powerplant, with 187bhp and 268bhp versions of the 2.0 TSI turbocharged petrol unit above it. All are now fitted with particulate filters.

Four diesels will be offered: a 1.6 TDI with 118bhp; a new 148bhp 2.0 TDI Evo with selective cylinder deactivation; a 187bhp 2.0 TDI without the cylinder shutdown; and a carried-over version of the current 237bhp BiTDI unit. The GTE plug-in hybrid will continue and has been given a bigger battery, rising from 9.9kWh to 13.0kWh.

Volkswagen predicts an electric-only range of up to 34 miles under the WLTP testing regime. That’s around 12 miles more than the current GTE and enough for continued exemption from London's congestion charge. Volkswagen estimates it could take up to 25% of Passat sales, up from 10% previously.

The saloon and estate versions of the facelifted Passat will go on sale at the same time, as will the off-road-styled Alltrack. The current entry-level S grade has been dropped, and pricing is expected to increase by £1000 across the board, with sales starting in June.

No more Passats for SA - here's the new one we'll miss

Prior to its discontinuation in the mid 1980s Volkswagen’s Passat was a popular family car. Then it came back as a more premium sedan in the late nineties and it never really took off in a big way. And now it’s going away once again.

Volkswagen SA has informed us that the facelifted Passat, just revealed in Germany, will not be coming to South Africa as the nameplate is being discontinued locally. This comes as no surprise given its low sales volumes. People just aren’t buying sedans in big volumes anymore, particularly big sedans and particularly those without premium badges on the bonnets. It’s a pity because the Passat was a highly underrated sedan.

So what exactly are we going to miss out on with the new Passat?

Visually there’s not much to tell it apart from the current model, apart from some subtle styling tweaks at the back and front, including new LED Matrix headlights, and some smarter finishes inside, so the big news is the technology that it brings to the brand stable.

To that end, it’s the first VW that’s capable of partially automated driving across practically the whole speed range, as in zero to 210km/h (remember, that’s legal on some German highways).

Also making its debut in the new Passat is Emergency Steering Assist, which uses braking assistance to lend a hand during evasive manoeuvres.

Another new-to-VW feature that Passat introduces is a capacitive steering wheel, which detects touch by the driver and provides an interactive interface to systems such as Travel Assist.

Furthermore, there’s a significantly enhanced digital instrument cluster (featuring three display configurations) and a new infotainment system that’s permanently online, and which features advanced ‘natural’ voice control and a redesigned App-Connect interface for integrating smartphone apps.

On the engine front, European customers get to choose from a wide range of petrol and diesel powerplants with outputs ranging from 88kW to 200kW, and including a redeveloped and more efficient 2.0 TDI Evo with 110kW, and a new version of the GTE plug-in hybrid with a claimed range (on the new WLTP cycle) that’s been extended to 55km.

Here’s why the updated Volkswagen Passat isn’t coming to SA

Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed the facelifted Passat revealed ahead of an official debut at the upcoming Geneva International Motor Show will not be coming to local shores.

“The Passat will be discontinued for the South African market, so there is no facelift coming to SA,” the local arm of the Wolfsburg-based firm told CARmag.co.za, before suggesting the sleekly styled Arteon fastback (21 of which were sold in SA in January) would fill the void.

VW SA furthermore said the segment in which the Passat found itself was “not doing too well” locally, adding that sales of the sedan had fallen to fairly low levels of late. Indeed, the outgoing Passat was on our list of slowest-selling vehicles for the month of January 2019.

Of course, the Passat is not the first big-name sedan to leave South African shores thanks to lagging sales, with the likes of the Mazda6, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima having exited over the past few years.

In addition, in December 2017 Volkswagen SA confirmed the new Jetta would not be sold locally, since the firm would not be producing the seventh-generation version of the sedan in right-hand drive (the outgoing, sixth-generation model, however, is still on the market in SA, with 72 units sold in January).

Volkswagen reveals limited-edition sporty Passat Estate

R-Line Edition is limited to 2000 units; it offers a unique livery, range-topping engines and adaptive dampers

Volkswagen has revealed a sporty-flavoured variant of its newly facelifted Passat Estate.

Set to be displayed at the Geneva motor show next week, the Passat Estate R-Line Edition will be limited to 2000 examples.

Buyers can choose either the Passat's range-topping diesel engine, the 237bhp 2.0 TDI, or the petrol 268bhp 2.0 TSI to go with the standard 4Motion four-wheel-drive sytem, DSG seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and Dynamic Chassic Control (DCC) adaptive damping.

The R-Line Edition is also the only version of the Audi A4 Avant and Volvo V60 rival that will enable drivers to disengage the electronic stability control (ESC) – for "driving on race tracks", according to Volkswagen.

The sporty-flavoured model is distinguished from the standard, Business and Elegance versions of the Passat Estate by new Moonstone Grey paint and a number of areas finished in high gloss black. These are the roof, roof rails, roof-edge spoiler, door mirror housings, side window frames, rear diffuser and alloy wheels. The latter are a new 19in design named Pretoria. In addition, the LED tail-lights are also darkened.

The interior is similarly coloured and gains R-Line sports seats upholstered in Nappa and 'carbon' leather, multi-colour ambient lighing and brushed stainless steel pedals and door sills.

Also standard are the 12.3in Digital Cockpit display and the larger (9.2in) of the two touchscreen infotainment systems available on the Passat Estate, which features a 360deg parking camera and wireless connection of iPhones to Apple CarPlay.

Volkswagen's newly upgraded Travel Assist is also fitted. This semi-autonomous driving function can control the car's acceleration, braking and steering at speeds of up to 130mph by combining the front-facing camera, automatic emergency braking, Park Assist manoeuvring sytstem, lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control. However, it constantly checks that the driver's hands remain on the wheel.

LED Matrix headlights are also a standard feature of the R-Line Edition.

Orders for the variant will be taken from May. Pricing hasn't yet been announced, but it's expected to start at around £30,000.

Volkswagen Passat now world’s best-selling mid-size car

Volkswagen says it built its 30 millionth Passat at the start of April 2019, making the nameplate the best-selling mid-size vehicle in the world.

The milestone unit – a plug-in hybrid Passat GTE Variant finished in Pyrite Silver Metallic paint – was produced at VW’s Emden plant. The Wolfsburg-based automaker says the special vehicle will be used “as a press and test vehicle for the international media” over the coming months.

Of course, in February 2019, VW South Africa confirmed to CARmag.co.za the facelifted Passat would not be coming to our shores, with the outgoing model having since been removed from the German firm’s local website.

Production of the Passat started at VW’s Wolfsburg plant on 14 May 1973, with the original model playing the role of successor to the VW 1600. The nameplate has since outsold the Beetle (21,5 million units) and isn’t far behind the Golf (35 million units).

Should I buy one?

Restrained, smart, refined, spacious, solidly built, consistently well-finished and now quite well-endowed for onboard technology, the Passat looks set to continue to appeal to those who value its understated, progressive qualities as a family car and a daily commuter.

For anyone looking for greater fun factor, the GTE version only takes the car so far. But for its combination of (albeit limited) added pace and pep, allied with company car tax savings and the potential for even more impressive daily fuel economy than before, it deserves to continue to grow in popularity.

Should I buy one?

At almost £40k, this Passat wagon needs more polish and panache, and while the exterior style promises it, the car fails to deliver the restful, finely furnished load-lugging you anticipate. The engine and tyres are too noisy, at this price you’d expect leather and its driving dynamics are nothing special. Among the small choice of high-riding, all-wheel-drive estates, you’d do well to check out the Volvo V60 Cross Country and Audi A4 Allroad. There are certainly Passat estates that make sense, but the Alltrack isn’t one of them.
