Should I buy one?

If you prefer your plug-in hybrid saloons (or estates) to be comfortable, refined and completely unpretentious, and if you can afford an admittedly rather steep asking price of £38,940, you’ll probably be well served by the Passat GTE Advance. Not only do you get leather upholstery, heated seats, Volkswagen’s sharp 9.2in Discover Navigation Pro infotainment suite and more all thrown in as standard, but it’s usefully practical, too.

It won’t engage in quite the same way the BMW 330e can and isn’t as opulent as the Mercedes-Benz C300de. But if you want to fly under the radar in quiet, comfortable refinement, it certainly has plenty of merits.

Should I buy one?

The Passat R-Line Edition might look expensive even to VW diehards. If I wasn’t absolutely convinced that I needed so much space, this tester would find it hard to justify at a price that puts it fully £6000 above an outgoing Golf R Estate; a car that, spaciousness aside, does pretty much everything this Passat is seeking to do, but does it all with more pace, character and enthusiasm.

And yet that makes the top-level Passat’s case seem harder to make than it need be for some. As a pretty humble family wagon made ever-so-slightly special, and just a little bit rare and collectable, this car has a very particular and quite niche but nonetheless real sort of ownership appeal.

It’s the only Passat available with this particular tune of 268bhp petrol engine, after all. And it reminds you of the likes of the MG Montego Turbo or the Ford Mondeo ST200; ordinary family cars, both, made special and likable without getting mixed up in the trappings of the performance car hierarchy or somehow weighed down as reluctant status symbols.

As a fairly fast, really usable, gently enjoyable and very pleasant performance estate with just a little bit of tastefulness and restraint about it, it’s something of a rarity. And if nobody seems to know exactly what it is or why you like it? Well, you might quite like that about it too.

Narrowing the focus

It's clear that VW's powers lie within the SUV and passenger car segment, which enables them to go toe-to-toe with Toyota every month. That saying 'if it's not broken, don't fix it' applies to the removal of their sedan stalwarts.

Whereas customers could choose between two sedan options, they are now forced to choose only one model in particular with the only difference being the trim level specification.

Volkswagen should have copied a page out of their own book with what they did with the Polo and Polo Vivo range. By removing two familiar models and replacing it with an entirely new one was a huge gamble that didn't pay off.

Mercedes-Benz tried it with the X-Class bakkie and that 'love story' didn't end well.

The failure of the Arteon is not going to cripple the German brand, but the message it brings across is that new isn't always better.

Volkswagen Passat Alltrack axed in UK due to poor sales

Rugged 4x4 estate is removed from sale in Britain with no replacement planned as buyers shift to SUVs

Volkswagen UK has axed the rugged Passat Alltrack from its line-up as the off-road estate niche gradually becomes less popular with the rise of SUVs.

Confirmed to Autocar by a spokesman for the brand, the Alltrack is no longer available to order on VW’s website and it’s expected that only a very small amount of dealer stock remains.

The decision is primarily down to poor sales for the variant. Although it is not officially confirmed, it is believed that the sales mix for the Alltrack compared with the regular Passat was an insignificantly small percentage. Indeed, less than 2% of the current-generation Passats for sale on Autotrader are Alltracks.

Wolfsburg gives the go-ahead to new, more versatile version of the Ford Mondeo rival, arriving in 2023

Volkswagen has given the ninth-generation Passat a definitive go-ahead after more than a year of internal debate over the future of the German saloon and estate.

The decision comes after Volkswagen Group chairman Herbert Diess had cast doubt on whether the Passat would be replaced. He cited the increasing popularity of the similarly sized Arteon and plans to produce the well-received electric ID Vizzion concept in saloon and estate bodystyles from 2023 onwards as possible reasons not to continue beyond today’s car, which was introduced in 2015.

Set for UK launch in 2023, the new Passat will share its platform, drivetrains and electrical architecture with the Skoda Superb – alongside which right-hand-drive versions will be produced in a new greenfield factory to be established by Skoda as part of a major expansion of its production capacity.

The move will bring an end to the production of the Passat at Volkswagen’s Emden factory in Germany after more than 36 years, according to Volkswagen sources, who say the plant will be soon begin a comprehensive reconstruction for the electric-powered ID 4 SUV, which is scheduled to be produced there from 2022.

The Volkswagen Passat Leaves The United States In 2023

The Passat nameplate has been a feature of Volkswagen showrooms in the U.S. for three decades now. Through the years, buyers have had such wonderful choices as wagons, diesel models and even the unconventional W8 engine. Now, the crossover and SUV world domination has taken another victim: Volkswagen will stop selling the Passat in the United States in 2023.

As reported by Wards Auto, Volkswagen’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will shift from producing the Passat to the ID.4 electric crossover. ID.4 production begins in 2022 and reaches full capacity in 2023 after the last Passats roll off the line. Removing the Passat from the plant frees up capacity. Volkswagen plans to spend up to $800 million to expand the plant for ID.4 production. The plant will produce the ID.4 alongside the Atlas and Atlas Cross.

In the Wards article, Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter said:

We’ve made a decision to cancel the Passat for the U.S. The sales trend is very firmly in favor of SUV models, as indicated by the success of the (Chattanooga-built) Atlas.

Though the Passat will be dead in the United States, it’ll continue in markets like Europe and China.

Volkswagen Passat sedan to be killed off after all, claim insiders

Volkswagen will kill off the version of its Passat sedan offered in Europe as well as the one built for the United States, according to company insiders.

While the Passat left the South African market early in 2019 due to lagging sales, it’s worth pointing out the nameplate is still considered the best-selling mid-size vehicle in the world, with more 30 million examples having been produced.

Still, Automotive News Europe says the Wolfsburg-based firm’s shift in focus to electric vehicles and crossovers will see the Passat sedan axed by 2023. Interestingly, the publication suggests the Passat station wagon will live on after that date.

Man, I still hate it that VWSA stopped selling passats in SA and more so that they never sold estates in this country. Had a CC and Passat Estate as company cars when I was in the UK. In SA ,had a Passat 2014 and 2017 CC before the company changed rules. Next car is a VW TCross R-Line

The Volkswagen Passat will be ending its time in the USA after having seen 22 years of impressive sales. The reason for this is to prepare the plant where it is assembled for production of electric vehicles. Celebrating its success in the market is a limited edition model with design cues celebrating its heritage.

Since 2011, the Volkswagen Passat has been assembled at the brand’s Chattanooga plant in Tennessee alongside the Atlas SUV.

Aurora Red metallic models with Titan Black interior will number 411 units that represent the original vehicle production code. Racing Green Metallic models with Mauro Brown interior will be number 423, for the Chattanooga area code, and Pure White models with Mauro Brown interior will number 524 units, signifying the opening date of the Chattanooga Plant on May 24, 2011.
