Citroen C4

Following on from its successful SUV offensive with the launch of C3 Aircross SUV and C5 Aircross SUV - 300,000 and 200,000 sales respectively - Citroën is ready for the next stage in the rollout of its product strategy, focusing firmly on the hatchback market.

Compact hatchbacks remain an important part of the European car market, accounting for nearly 28% of C-segment sales in 2019. New ë-C4 and New C4 tick all the boxes in this competitive segment, while offering a modern and characterful new design concept as an integral part of the product offering.

Citroën's new-generation compact hatchback is inspired by its customers and the way they experience their cars. The 100% electric New ë-C4 and New C4 have all the qualities needed to shake up a segment that is having to reinvent itself. For Citroën, that means offering an all-new silhouette with a choice of 100% electric, petrol or Diesel power.

THREE DIFFERENT POWERTRAINS TO CHOOSE FROM: 100% ELECTRIC, PETROL OR DIESEL

New ë-C4 - 100% ëlectric and New C4 are the same modern and technologically advanced car, but with an enhanced choice of powertrains: 100% electric, petrol or Diesel. Customers simply choose the high-performance and efficient option that best meets their needs.

New ë-C4 is the fifth electrified model to be announced in 2020 as part of Citroën's electrification strategy - after C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid, Ami, ë-Dispatch and ë-SpaceTourer.

New Citroen C4: Family hatch gets bold, SUV-inspired redesign

High-riding C4 Cactus successor set to prioritise comfort, will be accompanied by an ë-C4 EV

The new Citroën C4 has a more conventional look than the C4 Cactus it replaces and is slightly higher-riding, with the intention to bridge the gap between traditional hatchbacks and SUVs.

The French manufacturer has released the first images and preliminary details of the model, which also indirectly replaces the C4 hatchback that was axed in 2018. It will be sold with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains, making it the first family hatchback in the portfolio of parent firm PSA Group to offer a zero-emissions variant. More powertrain information will follow, but expect a range of 200 miles for the ë-C4.

Citroën CEO Vincent Cobée told Autocar recently that the introduction of the model held “massive” importance for Citroën’s sales growth in Europe. In 2019, the brand grew 1% year on year, selling 830,000 vehicles.

Cobée said: “The car will be Citroën to its core, in design, innovation and comfort. So for us, it’s one of three or four bullets in the overall growth of Citroën. Citroën has massive legitimacy in this segment. It’s the one with the most populist customer base.”

I prefer the look of the first gen Cactus (the one we got in SA) but I don't hate this. The rear end is a bit weird in my opinion but hey, it's a Citroen. If it wasn't weird in some way then is it really a Citroen?

New Citroën C4: first images show hatchback’s SUV-inspired styling

The first official images of the new Citroën C4 have been released, confirming the third-generation French hatchback has adopted an SUV-inspired design.

Citroën claims the newcomer’s “elevated and assertive stance” means the body shape has “all the elegance and dynamism of a hatchback, while subtly adopting certain SUV traits for added strength and character”.

Indeed, the company says the hatchback’s new silhouette “plays with several design codes, which marks the beginning of a new era of Citroën style”.

In Europe, the new C4 will be offered with a choice of powertrains; fully electric (with the ë-C4 badge), petrol or diesel. Citroën has yet to release details about engine options, promising more information will be revealed further down the line.

New Citroen C4: electric e-C4 to offer 217-mile range

Citroen confirms details of its SUV-inspired new C4, which is charged with reviving the hatchback segment

Citroën says the new C4, which will be offered with an electric ë-C4 version from launch, will “put compact hatchbacks back on the map” through an SUV influenced design and a focus on comfort.

The French firm recently released initial images and details of the third-generation C4, which effectively replaces the C4 Cactus, but has now given more information, including performance figures for the 134bhp ë-C4.

The Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf rival is slightly higher-riding than the C4 Cactus it replaces, with the intention to bridge the gap between traditional hatchbacks and SUVs. It will be sold with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains, making it the first family hatchback in the portfolio of parent firm PSA Group to offer a zero-emissions variant.

Citroen: Diesel option to be strong seller for new C4 hatchback

French brand has seen a surge in demand for diesel in the UK since the beginning of the year

Citroën plans for the new C4 - available with fully electric, petrol and diesel powertrains - to become its joint-third-best-selling model in the UK when it launches in 2021.

Head of product marketing Robert Clark expects sales of the new car to match the C5 Aircross SUV, which is currently outsold by just the C3 hatchback and C3 Aircross crossover. He insisted that sales of the new C4 will be “additional volume for the brand, compared to where we are today”, rather than merely filling the gap left by its C4 Cactus predecessor.

Citroën expects the ë-C4 electric version to account for 10% of the model’s sales, with diesel making up a relatively high 17% of the combustion car’s sales.

“We’ve noticed a bit of a shift [towards diesel] from the beginning of this year,” explained Clark, “which has come from the fact that we’ve helped explain to our dealers the benefits of diesel for customers. The CO2 is a lot lower than petrol and that’s become such a big focus for the industry, because of the fines levied on manufacturers.”

New Citroen C4 and all-electric e-C4 go on sale in UK

SUV-inspired new C4 is priced from £20,990 in combustion form or from £29,180 as a pure EV

The all-new Citroen C4 and electric ë-C4 have gone on sale in the UK, with prices starting from £20,990 for the standard car and £29,180 for the EV.

Combustion-powered cars are available in four trim levels: Sense, Sense Plus, Shine and Shine Plus. Entry-level cars get LED headlights, 18in alloy wheels, a 10in touchscreen with smartphone compatibility and a comprehensive suite of driver aids as standard, while top-rung Shine Plus models - from £27,950 - bring extras including rear privacy glass, keyless entry, automatic headlights and front and rear parking sensors.

The ë-C4 tops the line-up, and is unavailable in entry-level Shine trim but matches the equipment offered on the petrol and diesel cars on the other trim levels.

Citroën says the model line, which comprises petrol and diesel powertrain options alongside the fully electric version, will “put compact hatchbacks back on the map” through an SUV influenced design and a focus on comfort.

Citroen e-C4 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

In terms of interestingness, the ë-C4 is probably halfway between those two in terms of both looking at and sitting in it. And with a 50kWh battery, it should go further between charges than their base variants, but it’s not quite as nice to drive as either.

Ultimately, though, not unlikeable.

Citroen C4 Puretech 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

I don't think so. Which is a shame because this is, to my eyes, an interesting-looking car with a relatively appealing interior.

But it's a good deal worse to drive than the ë-C4 – the first time, in my recollection, that the electric version of a car is notably better to drive than the ICE one where both are available. It has the worst ride-and-handling combination I’ve experienced this year, and I’ve driven the Mini JCW GP.

I know this is a thread for the C4 but can we please just take a second and appreciate the C4 and some of its PSA siblings, the Mokka and 2008 (I assume they share the same platform)
