Genesis' first SUV./

Genesis shared the first official images of the GV80, the first sport-utility vehicle for the brand. The much-anticipated, three-row (available) GV80 will become the fourth model in the Genesis lineup, joining the G70, G80 and G90 sedans. Like its sedan siblings, GV80 will be based on a rear-wheel-drive platform unique to the Genesis brand; all-wheel drive will be optional. The "V" in the Genesis GV80 marque represents versatility that only a Genesis SUV can offer.

"Over the last four years, Genesis established itself as a respected luxury brand with superior vehicle quality and a lineup of class-leading sedans with charismatic and discriminating style," said William Lee, Executive Vice President and Global Head of the Genesis Brand. "With the launch of GV80, Genesis will elevate expectations for excellence within the luxury SUV market."

The first images of Genesis GV80 provide a complete picture of the first SUV created by Genesis Design. The interior and exterior styling of GV80, a development of the GV80 Concept introduced at the 2017 New York auto show, was a collaboration between Genesis Design studios located in South Korea, the United States and Germany.

The 2020 Genesis GV80 Is A Luxury SUV That Punches Above Its Weight

There is a new player on the scene with a full-sized three-row luxury SUV, as if the world needed such a thing. Korean lux brand Genesis has been building some incredibly well-adjusted automobiles, and its fans have been crying for an SUV model since the start. With a brand new RWD-based architecture, the GV80 looks ready to take on competitors costing far more, as is the Genesis way.

Based on these shadowy press images it looks like the GV80 is a criminal informant taking a clandestine meeting with its handler in a dark parking garage, but from what we can actually see the thing looks quite attractive. It’s not burdened by overwrought design, continuing the Genesis ethos there as well. It does have a massive gaping maw of a grille, but this might be the most cohesive use of such a large grille.

The GV80 certainly has the posture of a Mercedes GLS or a BMW X7, but with maybe just a tinge of panache cribbed from the Bentley Bentayga. I haven’t yet decided if this is a good thing.

Genesis GV80

Genesis officially launched GV80, its first sport-utility vehicle. Genesis GV80 introduces a variety of firsts for the Genesis brand, including a six-cylinder diesel (Not available in the US Market), electronically controlled suspension with road preview, and Road Active Noise Cancellation. The launch event and media test drive took place at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) west of Seoul.

"GV80 represents the essence of the innovative spirit of Genesis," said William Lee, Executive Vice President and Global Head of the Genesis Brand. "As we launch GV80, our first luxury flagship SUV, we simultaneously open a new chapter for Genesis."

The "V" in the GV80 marque represents versatility that only a Genesis SUV can offer. The production GV80 realizes the vision of the GV80 Concept first shown at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

Hyundai's Genesis reveals tech-laden flagship SUV

We don’t get the Genesis brand in South Africa but it is essentially Hyundai’s answer to Lexus and Infiniti, and now the premium division has unleashed its first SUV, which is badged GV80.

You might see a bit of Bentley upfront and a few hints of Aston Martin round back, but the Genesis SUV does have a number of unique touches, such as claw-like split headlights and taillights, which are set to become the Genesis brand’s unique signature.

The large and imposing SUV is built on a rear-wheel-drive platform and offers all-wheel-drive as an option. Interestingly, it also ushers in the Hyundai group’s first six-cylinder diesel engine, which is a 3-litre unit that produces 205kW, although the torque figure is unspecified. Also not detailed as yet are the two turbocharged petrol engine options that will be offered in markets such as the US.

The cabin, from what we can make out in the pictures provided, looks classy enough to compete with practically anything from Europe, and it’s also dripping with advanced technologies.

The dashboard’s centrepiece is a 36.8cm split-screen infotainment system that features a handwriting recognition input system as well as augmented reality navigation that places virtual driving guidelines over actual driving images to allow drivers to recognise roads.

Hyundai continues its push into the luxury SUV segment with the Genesis GV80.

The Korean car industry is at record levels of confidence and the latest evidence of this is Hyundai’s Genesis GV80.

What Lexus is to Toyota, Genesis is to Hyundai. It is the brand’s luxury division and does a tidy trade in the United States and other select markets.

The newest Genesis vehicle is a large SUV which shows that Hyundai isn’t afraid of competing in the large luxury gravel travel market.

Named GV80, this is Hyundai’s idea of an XC90-type rival. It features a strong design with split-level head- and taillights. The grille has an imposing hexagon pattern finishing too.

The platform architecture for GV80 is rear-wheel drive, although there will be an all-wheel-drive option too, for those who require the additional traction.

In concept, this is a luxury touring SUV, not a dedicated adventure vehicle. So don’t expect the most advanced traction control or low-range gearing.

Powering the GV80 is an advanced turbodiesel engine. Displacing 3-litres in capacity, this diesel engine will be of interest to followers of the Hyundai brand. It boosts 205 kW and 588 Nm of torque, driving through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2021 Genesis GV80, a luxury SUV/crossover thing that was unveiled earlier this month, might low-key be the best luxury SUV on the market by the time it reaches customers sometime this year. Now we know how much it’ll cost, a number that on paper suggests it’ll be able to more than compete with cars like the Mercedes GLE or BMW X5, though price won’t be the only factor.

According to Car and Driver, the base, rear-wheel drive, inline-four version of the GV80 will start at $50,000, while the V6, all-wheel drive version will start at $65,000. Compare those numbers to the GLE’s starting price of $54,250, while the X5's is $58,900. The GV80 numbers aren’t official, keep in mind, but I would trust Car and Driver’s source and they do track with Genesis’s overall strategy.

While Genesis has been puttering around the luxury market for a few years with a lineup of sedans, its hoping the game-changer for the new brand will be the 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV, which will now start at $49,925, but it’s going to cost a lot more if you want all-wheel drive equipped.

The new GV80 is poised to compete with other midsize SUVs like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7. In order to conquer sales from the German juggernauts, Genesis has priced the base GV80 at $49,925 (including freight charges) according to Car And Driver, putting it a few thousand cheaper than its leading competition.
