Nothing says 'luxury' like wrapping your hands around thick, smooth leather
In a luxury vehicle, the truly lush elements come in the small details. Sure, there’s lots of tech, and the handling is great, but what’s going to set you apart are those smaller, ergonomic details that just make you feel good. And in the 2021 Genesis GV80, I couldn’t get over how substantially thick the steering wheel felt.
It’s a weird thing to enjoy, I’ll admit. It’s incredibly specific. It’s probably not something that most people would pick out as a feature they enjoy in a vehicle, and the fact that this is the thing about the GV80 that stuck with me is... odd. But I haven’t been able to shake it, and I want to talk about it.
I realize this is not a popular take. Jalopnik has, in fact, shared strong feelings about the awful nature of unnecessarily chunky steering wheels in the past. And there are plenty of forums filled with smaller-bodied folks who complain about how thick the steering wheels have grown in recent years.

Genesis will limit production of its ultra-luxury GV80 to just 600 units.
Genesis is really jumping into the deep end of the ultra luxury pool. Surprisingly, it’s not with the G90 and its great wheels. No, this time around it’s with the GV80 crossover. The Korean luxury brand is making a special edition four-seat version for your conspicuous consumption. Called the GV80 Prestige Signature, Genesis is bringing just 600 of these ultra luxurious GV80s to our shores. So what’s so extra special about it?
The centerpiece of the Prestige Signature is its four-seat design. A pair of second-row captains’ chairs will allow you to chill out in the rear. And when I say chill out, I mean feet up, cigar in hand with a drink in the other, all while watching a simulated fireplace on the screen in front of you. Each rear passenger gets a six-way power-adjustable seat with heating and cooling, a center console with armrest, controls, and wireless charging for your device. And there’s something called Relax Mode. I’m sure this turns the chair into a full blown La-Z-Boy recliner with a footrest.
Visually you’ll be able to tell the GV80 Prestige Signature apart on the outside by its unique paint and huge 22-inch wheels. But you’d think with something like this one would get more customization options. Buyers will get to choose between just two paint options: matte white “Matterhorn” or matte grey
“Melbourne.” Choosing the gray will get you a black interior while white gets you a rather unique blue/beige interior. Buyers will also only be able to have the 3.5-liter 375 horsepower V6 and AWD combo as well.

As it is, only those content to buy at the cheaper end of the showroom range stand to get the truly relaxing car they’ve been promised. If you’re buying a GV80, then, be brave enough to stick with diesel power and lower-level trim, accepting whatever equipment compromises come along with the decision.

The four-passenger GV80 Coupe Concept adds a new facet to the Genesis brand. "It emphasizes the duality of the Genesis brand by showcasing the antagonistic character that lives within the Athletic and Elegance parameters of Genesis' design philosophy," said Luc Donckerwolke, Group Chief Creative Officer.
Inspired by the X Speedium Coupe Concept unveiled in New York last year, the GV80 Coupe Concept combines the practicality of a lifestyle-oriented SUV with the dynamism of a sports car. It is a statement of intent for more emotional, performance-oriented models and a preview of Genesis' future programs.
"At its inception, the Genesis brand began creating luxury sedans, which evolved into the G70, G80, and G90 models," said Luc Donckerwolke. "Over the past seven years, we have added more lifestyle-oriented models to the portfolio, such as our GV80 and GV70 SUVs. Now we are pushing the envelope with more emotional cars that elevate Genesis' performance and dynamic attributes."

The next step in Genesis’s model expansion has been previewed with the new Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept at the New York motor show.
As the name and styling suggests, the concept is a coupe version of the brand’s GV80 SUV and it is set to go into production in late 2023 or early 2024. It is a follow up to the Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept the firm unveiled at last year’s New York motor show, although this time the production intent is clear.
Genesis says that the concept “serves as a statement of intent for the future, hinting towards more emotional and performance-oriented models”. To that end, it is notably sportier in its styling than any Genesis model to date, and will line up alongside the likes of the Audi RS Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupé when it reaches production.

The facelifted Genesis GV80 is getting a supercharged V6
Oh, and an even more massive grille. Because the herd must be followed, right?
Not something we’d have earmarked for a supercharged V6 with 409bhp and 405lb ft, but the Genesis GV80 is about to become just such a car with a refreshed version revealed in Korea.
Well, that’s true of the coupe at least: the electric supercharger leaves the 3.5-litre turbo to its own devices in the SUV (so a mere 375bhp/390lb ft there) while a smaller, 2.5-litre alternative brings 300bhp and 311lb ft to the table.
The changes are part of a mid-life facelift that also introduces tweaks inside and out. Outside first: you’ll notice that the designers have found room for even more grilleage and bigger air intakes - for improved cooling apparently - while the headlights have been mildly tweaked.
Meanwhile the rear is more curvaceous than before, with some of the more angular lines filed down for a softer overall look. Yours in a choice of a dozen colours, no less, and either 20- or 22-inch alloys.

Genesis has gone and done something that Chrysler used to be known for doing. They went and put a concept car into production virtually unchanged. For 2024, the Genesis GV80 gets a coupe version that’s nearly identical to the concept shown earlier this year.
The GV80 Coupe’s introduction coincides with a refresh for the GV80 for 2024. So in addition to gaining the coupe styling of the concept, there’s a new front fascia with Genesis’ signature grille that’s been toned down a bit; it’s narrower but wider and gets a surround of chrome trim. There’s a new air intake below the grille along with a metal faux skid plate below that. Around back, things are more or less the same save for the regular GV80. The exhaust outlets have been removed and are now hidden under the rear bumper, a move that Genesis says, “elevates the GV80’s sophistication.”
