has an answer for shoppers clamouring for affordable crossovers and SUVs, and it's a new subcompact entry called the Tarek. At least that's what we think VW is going to call it when it makes its official debut.

Measuring smaller than the compact VW Tiguan, the Tarek looks to compete against diminutive rivals such as the upcoming Chevy Trailblazer and Hyundai Venue.

That should lead to a fuel-conscious four-cylinder engine and available all-wheel drive. It should also offer all the latest driver-assistance tech and infotainment features that consumers crave.

There's still a lot left to know about the 2021 Tarek—including its official name—but here's what we know so far.

This Is Volkswagen's New Small SUV for America
Smaller than the Tiguan, this model is called the Tharu or Tarek in other markets. Reportedly, it should arrive in the U.S. within a few years.

  • Volkswagen is working on a new small SUV model for the U.S. market, and we now know—thanks to a report from Autoblog Argentina—that it will be closely related to the vehicle you see here.
  • Called the Tarek in South America and the Tharu in China, this crossover is slightly smaller than the Tiguan and will receive a different name for the U.S. market.
  • We expect a slightly tweaked version of the Tharu/Tarek to to arrive in U.S. dealerships in 2021.
