Audi RS3 Sedan sets the fastest Nürburgring lap for the compact segment​


Towards the end of July, the undisguised Audi RS3 Sedan and Sportback broke light after a rather lengthy teaser campaign. Fast forward a week and a bit and the RS3, in sedan-guise, has proven just how spectacular its vast array of new technology is, having set a lap time of 7 minutes 40,748 seconds around the industry-standard proving ground, a lap record for compact cars; the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

As Audi puts it, “the basis for the record is the interplay of top technologies.” More specifically, the new carbon-ceramic brakes up front of the Audi RS4 Sedan, the superb 2,5-litre TFSI in-line five – which has won the “International Engine of the Year” award nine times in a row – newly developed shock absorbers along with adaptive dampers and increased camber both front and rear.

Audi RS3 Sedan Sets Nurburgring Record​

The all-new Audi RS3 Sedan has only just been revealed, but it’s already making its intentions clear. It’s not here to take part, it’s here to take over, and it’s just set the record for compact cars on the Nurburgring.​

The all-new Audi RS3 has set the record for compact vehicles at the Nurburgring, with a time of 7 minutes and 40.748 seconds. This time deposes the current record holder, the wild Renault Megane RS Trophy-R (7 minutes and 45.389 seconds) and is comfortably ahead of its arch-enemy, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S (7 minutes and 48.80 seconds).

The vehicle you see here and the below video is still in the pre-production camouflage as the record-breaking run was completed before the vehicle’s official reveal.

Behind the wheel is Audi Sport racing and development driver Frank Stippler. The Audi RS3 sedan was chosen over the Sportback as it features better aerodynamic properties. The Audi RS3 also wore the optional Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slicks tyres.

New 2021 Audi RS3 touches down with 395bhp for £50,900

Ingolstadt's hyper-hatch returns with five-pot power and overhauled four-wheel drive system

Audi has ushered in a raft of design, technology and powertrain upgrades for the new, third-generation version of its hardcore RS3 mega-hatch.

Available to order now ahead of customer deliveries beginning in November, the Sportback and Saloon are priced from £50,900 and £51,900 respectively, each packing 395bhp and enhanced dynamics over the old car courtesy of its new torque-splitter device, which can be configured in a dedicated Drift mode.

Four specifications are available: the Carbon Black package brings black and carbonfibre-finished trim elements from £55,550, the limited-run Launch Edition (of which only 96 examples are UK-bound) is priced from £56,900 to account for its raft of extra equipment and derestricted 174mph top speed, while the range-topping Vorsprung car ticks nearly all the option boxes for £58,650.

On top of that, customers can specify the RS Dynamic pack from £5000, which brings adaptive suspension, ceramic brakes with gloss grey calipers, a sports exhaust and a top speed of 180mph.


Last wek, Audi confirmed that the new RS3 is now a lap record holder in the 'compact' class at the Nürburgring, having set a lap time of 7mins 40.75secs - beating the Renault Mégane RS Trophy R by 0.25 seconds. The record was set by development driver Frank Stippler, who was piloting an RS3 Sportback equipped with adaptive suspension, ceramic brakes and optional semi-slick tyres, which are not available in the UK.

It seems as though Audi's new RS 3 can do no wrong, setting a new lap record on the gruelling Nürburgring Nordschleife as the fastest compact model.

With Audi Sport racing and development driver Frank Stippler behind the wheel, the high-performance sedan crossed the line in a time of 7mins40.748 seconds - beating the previous record held by a Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R by 4.64 seconds.

Audi RS 3 Technical Project Leader Marvin Schwätter, says: "When we started development, we didn't know just how quickly our compact sportscar would be on the Nordschleife. But throughout endurance testing, we determined that we could reach very good times and set a new record."

Calling all fast Audi enthusiasts and, erm, anyone at work who needs to kill a bit of time before their next tea break – it’s the configurator for the new RS3.

The main takeaways are a), this is not a cheap car, with prices starting at £51,475 for the base RS3 and rising to almost £60,000 for the fully-loaded Vorsprung and b), it comes in many good colours.

Yeah there are few different shades of grey in there, because 2021, but the RS3 looks so much cooler in ‘Kyalami Green’, ‘Turbo Blue’, ‘Python Yellow’ or ‘Tango Red’. Or if none of those take your fancy, for £2,400 Audi will paint your new RS3 pretty much any colour you fancy from its ‘Exclusive’ catalogue.

New Audi RS 3 Achieves Radical 3.1 Second Zero To 100 KM/H

The embargoes have lifted on the new Audi RS 3 and it seems they have nailed it.

In a video posted by Audi YouTuber Auditography, you will see the RS 3 Sedan sprint to 100 km/h in a ridiculous 3.1 seconds. That is a massive 0.6 seconds quicker than what is claimed.

Sure maybe the onboard telemetry is a little ‘bias’ but we are very impressed nonetheless.

With a time of 7:40.748 minutes, the new Audi RS 3 Sedan is the fastest compact model on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“The third generation of Audi’s five-cylinder megahatch - and the best one yet. Although you’ll need to spend some time getting the best out of it”

So is this the best megahatch on the market? Well, the main competition comes from things like the Mercedes A45 AMG, a similarly-speedy, similarly-priced 400-ish bhp AWD hatchback. But they’re actually quite different. Where the Merc is angry and pointy and hard, the Audi is more cultured, better damped and less aggressive. I wouldn’t say it was slower though - and especially not on a bouncy b-road - this is probably as fast an A to B point car down an unknown road as you’re likely to get short of something with rally stickers and a ‘cage.

It’s not as visceral as something like the Merc - despite being the same power and also AWD - but the fact that it feels like it’s more on your side makes it just as quick. You’ll feel like you’re going faster in the A45, but I doubt you will be. More than that though, the RS3 now feels like its starting to get really comfortable in its own skin; it’s a confident, worthwhile, capable car, with a side order of madness not far off. Just don’t spec it in Kyalami green.

There’s an interesting thing going on here, in that initially, the RS3 felt a little bit all over the place. There’s a deeply impressive car here, buried under a landslide of data, adjustability, and the choice that it brings with it. Layers upon layers of individualisation, for every different surface, road and need. And while it searches for perfection, what the RS3 does is put the onus on the driver to pick the right combination. But when you do, it’s brilliant. A really good car on the right kind of wrong road.

Value, fuel economy, and conclusion

We don’t yet know what the RS3 will cost here in America, because I’m not sure Audi has decided yet, but it was suggested that it would likely start just under $60,000. I think for the sort of person that really appreciates an old-school sports sedan with an odd number of cylinders and is actively seeking something that’s not a sleeping pill to drive, that would be a pretty damn good deal.

Audi’s fuel economy estimates are between 27 and 29 combined mpg, which is reasonably decent, though I bet if you’re having real fun, those numbers will drop. I don’t think anyone with mpg as their primary concern will be buying these, but it’s nice to know it’s not awful.

I may be wrong about this being possibly the last new five-cylinder car to be released, but it’s possible I’m not, too. Inline fours and V8s will be with us a good long while, even as the industry moves inexorably to electron power, so I think if you’re fond of combustion cars, for reasons as irrational and absurd as you’d like, the RS3 should be worth considering.

It’s a sports sedan in every sense of what those words mean: a practical enough daily driver that lets you go about your mundane daily life in something that always reminds you of how much more it can do. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll find time to confirm all those feelings, and, as a result, you’ll be happier.
